Physical crafts feel like the last honest front that tech can’t take from me in some respect or another, so I suspect I will be doing a lot more of this kinda thing going forward.
One of my worries about the revelation that Epstein and Thiel at-all masterminded the current Transphobic panic is it's led to the perception that these people are Machiavellian geniuses rather than just opportunists who recognized something they could take advantage of (male rage).
Steve Bannon did not invent the Alt-Right. He recognized that there was a strain of resentment and rage fomenting in young male gamer spaces, and he took advantage of it. These men are opportunists, NOT brilliant political minds. They took something already there, and manipulated it.
Transphobia has always existed. Why else do you think there are laws on many states books that allow for a dude to murder a Trans person if they get intimate and he finds out that the person he's about to sleep with has a different anatomical configuration that he expected? It has ALWAYS been there. They just used their influence to boost it.
"These guys are geniuses who whole-cloth invented a political movement" is just a Supervillain veneer on Great Man Theory. They're just people who have learned to recognize things they can take advantage of, not brilliant social engineers.
This is important because a key part of fighting them is becoming as aware of opportunities in the social landscape to leverage to YOUR advantage as they are. This is a skill, and it can be developed. Honed. Doing so is extremely important.
I have been thinking about the powerful incentive a lot of authors and artists feel to not be seen as struggling, and I think a lot of it is down to a need to veneer whatever’s going on in your life with the reassurance that you, yourself, are not a sinking ship.
People don’t want to be around a drowning person because they’re afraid they’ll be pulled under, and if you need to sell something, whether it’s books or art or Etsy crafts, people think of economic hardship as being contagious, and there’s a fear that they’ll flee if your business is floundering.
So there’s this twisted incentive structure at play where the more dire straits you’re in, unless you’re throwing a gofundme out there (the only socially acceptable form of asking for direct help), the more pressure you feel to not be seen as getting pulled down by the quicksand, lest people flee to avoid being pulled under with you.
This is of course not how the world works at all. Hardship is not contagious, but man do we seem to believe that it is, as a culture.
It’s honestly really cool seeing everything I’ve painted so far in one place. Still have a whole battle force plus some vehicles to assemble and paint but man this is neat.
This “you can’t know something is bad until you try it yourself” attitude is genuinely bad for society because if you take that to its logical conclusion you’re rendered completely unable to benefit from the second hand experiences of mentors, friends, elders, and teachers. The basis of community.
My father gave a huge portion of his adult life to the meat-grinder of academia. It nearly destroyed him. It DID destroy parts of him. Given how many teachers wanted me to do the same, I might have made the same self-destructive error if I hadn’t had his example to warn me off it.
Is it possible that it would’ve gone okay for me? Maybe, but I am a lot like my father in many of the ways that made academia so miserable for him. There is no reason to think I would not have suffered similarly. Had I insisted on trying anyway I would not where I am now.
There are many other things many other friends, mentors, teachers, and compatriots have experienced that I have learned from by watching. I saw them suffer and did not do the same and thus did not suffer as they did. This is a key function of human community. You discard it at your own immense peril.
This is why “you can’t know how dangerous AI is until you use it” is a really bad lesson to internalize. It’s like saying you can’t understand lung cancer without smoking first.

I absolutely think this is what's happening, and I think it boils down to two impulses:
-The creative work is "hard" so people get stressed thinking about it,
and
-We're so convinced that scrolling = activism or even just "doing something" that being on your phone feels urgent and important.

This is because too many view accusations of AI use as a potential career ending humiliation, rather than a sign that the person making the accusation can (and should) be safely ignored.
I get it, especially for younger writers. You’re scared of being socially ostracized, but I’m going to give you a piece of advice it took me too long to internalize:
Nobody who levels frivolous shit like this at you is someone whose good opinion you should court anyway.
If someone says your writing style—that you have honed and worked on for years—bears some imagined hallmarks of AI, they’re showing that they’re a fucking toolbag whose ignorant of why the machine spits out words the way it does, and how that proof is actually useless.
If a person cannot grasp those things, AND tries to weaponize their ignorance against you? You should not care what they think about and should actively disregard it.
hey dont be a dick to people who work in mcdonalds or clean toilets or empty bins or sweep streets or put your food through the till in the supermarket because u know what they go home to their family every night too and they are just as valid as you theyre doing these shitty jobs which means you dont have to do them so be fucking nice
I legitimately do not trust anyone who treat people in the service industry poorly.
I try to keep as decent tabs as I can on the beliefs that I have mostly because I need something to hang onto in the dark moments vs the things I hold to be true because observation and experience have demonstrated them vs the ones that are the result of what's been verifiably proven.
This isn't perfect as a method for keeping me honest, but it does help me recognize what my internal rational for being angry when one of those things is challenged by someone or something else is. And THAT makes how I'm going to respond a much more informed choice.
If someone--for example--challenges something I just need to believe in because it keeps me from self-terminating, I should respond to that differently than I would to someone attacking--say--widely accepted medical consensus in my presence. I can probably ignore the first. The second, less so.
