UPDATE 08/29/15 :)
08/18/15: 11 Days
Joe has an appointment scheduled at the vet on the 29th for his follow up heartworm test. Send positive thoughts!
02/25/2015 - Immiticide, round 3!
We're home!! I can't believe we made it and we're all done with Joe's heartworm disease treatment! He is resting peacefully, and he laid down the whole drive home so I know he's exhausted and is in a bit of pain. I gave him his Tramadol and his Prednisone so those should kick in shortly. We will run another heartworm test in 6 months, and that should come back negative! Hooray! Good job joe!
02/24/2015 - Immiticide, Rouund 2!
Joe had his second round of immiticide to treat his heartworm disease this morning! Same deal as last month, he was visibly uncomfortable for a while, but he has had his tramadol and calmed down by this afternoon. I got to hold him as Dr. Gray shaved him and gave the immiticide, and she said he was much more relaxed than last time. I'm glad I could be the source of comfort for him, since he was a nervous wreck all morning. Good job, Dodo!
Joe says good luck to his friend Lola who starts her heartworm treatment on Friday! Good luck, Lola!
His injection site!
The immiticide!
01/26/2015: immiticide, round one!
Big day for the big dog! He handled his first injection well. We gave him an injection of Benadryl before the immiticide was given. They had to shave the area on his spine that it is injected to, so he has a cute little bald spot. He has some tramadol and prednisone to help him out for the next few days while he deals with the pain of the actual immiticide, and they seem to do their job well, because he is really sleepy. I think the only downside right now is the pred will make him go to the bathroom more, so we'll have to be on our toes (he had an accident in his kennel this morning, so I guess that shows you just how bad he had to go!) He was temped every half hour for a few hours, and they did a good job to make sure he was comfortable. Our new part time doctor, Dr. Bell, said she took his blanket away because he seemed like he was hot, and couldn't get comfy. All in all though, I'm very pleased with how today went. I was very nervous for my Dodo, but he has been handling it like a champ. I'm incredibly thankful for everyone at Altitude who has been working with him and us to make sure this treatment goes as smoothly as possible. As you can see, he is resting peacefully on the couch. We will be kenneling him come bedtime, and he will daycare again tomorrow!
01/21/2015 - Quick update!
Nothing new since his cough! He starts his first round of injections in 5 days - on Monday. We are very nervous but very excited.
12/30/2014 - Cough.
Joe had a coughing episode this morning. He was hacking like he was trying to vomit, but didn't actually vomit. With kennel cough going around, I decided I'd rather be safe than sorry since Joe's off his minocycline, and took him in to see Dr. Gray. He stopped coughing right before we left for the vet.
His heart and lungs sounded good. Dr. Gray said the cough sounded like a possible upper respiratory type infection, so she prescribed more minocycline for him. Joe's only taking 3 once a day this time instead of twice a day like before. I wonder if maybe he had a hair in his throat or something, because he hasn't hacked since this morning.
12/28/2014 - Food!
So tonight I doubled the amount of food I give Joe, instead of two cups of puppy food mixed with one can of wet, I gave him four cups of dry food mixed with one can, since he's been eating it so well the last few days. He ate all of it! I am so happy to have finally found something that my finicky friend will chomp down!
12/22/2014 - Finished meds!
Joe is finally done with his minocycline! Now we wait a month till we start his immiticide treatment on 1/26. Hooray!!
Joe got a bath today! He smells extra yummy!
12/15/2014 - Seizure #2.
Mondays proving to be no fun for dogs either as Joe experiences his second (but thankfully small) seizure. He came out of it well after licking uncontrollably at the ceiling and vomiting near the end of it. He’s a little wobbly now but other than that he’s responsive and we’re doing alright. He will probably come in to work with me tomorrow morning and we’ll see if we can get him some Valium.
Looking for bunnies🐰
12/12/2014 - Anal Glands.
Joe has been paying extra attention to his bum lately so I has Dr. Gray express his anal glands. Of course it was more complicated than it needed to be. His left one bled, so they had to infuse it and stick medicine up there. He also vomited this morning and had some diarrhea, so we have Metronidazole for him to take tonight to help with the diarrhea.
12/11/2014: Bloodwork round 2
Bloodwork came back looking good. I wasn't really expecting much of a change from last time.
