John Besh and Aaron Sanchez Announce New Taqueria in New Orleans!
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
For all you foodies out there, a new taqueria with unlimited potential is coming soon to the Central Business District. Locally acclaimed chef will collaborate with famed Mexican-American chef Aaron Sanchez on Johnny Sanchez. According to a recent press release, the restaurant is slated to open this fall at 930 Poydras Street, the former home of Ste. Marie restaurant which closed in May. According to a recent article on NOLA.com, another Johnny Sanchez (and the first of its kind) is scheduled to open in Baltimore this August. Sanchez, who is also co-host of the Food Network Program, "Chopped," isn't new to the New Orleans culinary world. The Texas native worked in New Orleans under Paul Prudhomme, during which he also met Chef. They also competed in 2007 in the first season of the "Next Iron Chef" on The Food Network. "Aaron Sanchez is practically family," Best said. According to the dynamic duo, Johnny Sanchez will combine Sanchez's deep knowledge of Mexican cuisines with Besh's focus on sourcing high-quality, local ingredients. The menu will include tacos, tostads and cerviches, and a few larger plates. Stay tuned for ongoing updates about this exciting addition to the New Orleans food scene!

More Corruption from City Hall
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
In the wake of a recent ruling to delay former Mayor Ray Nagin's sentencing hearing, an event that could signal the end of one of the worst episodes of corruption in the history the City of New Orleans, more potentially harmful news came from City Hall this morning. As the city prepares to award a major contract for the expansion of Louis Armstrong International Airport, a recent article is now noting that one of the firms that would be awarded the $546 million project is a former employer of now Deputy Mayor Cedric Grant. According to an article in this morning's Advocate: "Grant worked for Parsons Corp., one of the firms involved in the Parsons Odebrecht joint venture that he and other members of an evaluation committee last weeks scored as the best choice to manage construction of the $546 million terminal." Although the connection isn't illegal, it certainly raises questions in a city with a deep and troubling history of public corruption. "Grant’s previous employment with Parsons was first reported by WDSU-TV on Wednesday night. Grant managed road and highway infrastructure projects for Parsons while based in Atlanta, according to his biography. Parsons, based in California, and Odebrecht, based in Brazil, have done projects as a joint venture for more than a decade. State ethics laws would not bar Grant from involvement in a decision on a Parsons contract because he no longer works for the company."
So although an 11-member neutral board voted to award the contract to Parsons last week against competing bidder Hunt Gibbs Boh, it is still unsettling to find such a clear connection between a bidding company and officials in City Hall. What do you think? Should the award be revisited? Post your comments below! Joey Lehrman is a retired teacher with over 40 years of experience in the New Orleans public school system. New Orleans to End Chronic Homelessness by 2016?
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
According to Unity of Greater New Orleans, a non-profit active in the fight against homelessness, the city could be on pace to end the chronic problem that has plagued the area since Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the quality and affordable housing in the region in August of 2006.
What's more, says Martha Kegel, Unity's Executive Director, is that it could be accomplished by the 10-year anniversary of the storm in 2016.
I was somewhat shocked when I read the article by Richard A. Webster, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, especially since any drive around some of the city's major intersections reveals the omnipresent issue. But, the data tells an irrefutable story.
It might seem like a bold statement, but the nonprofit and its coalition of homeless advocacy groups have already reduced the number of chronically homeless people in the city from 4,579 in 2009 to only 677 last year.
As the story continues:
The total number of homeless people in Orleans and Jefferson parishes on a given night in January 2013 was 2,337 compared to 11,660 in 2007 representing an 80 percent decrease.
Since the end is in sight, I suggest that now more than ever is the time to support local non-profits like UNITY as they lead the fight towards ending chronic homelessness and working to ensure that every New Orleanian has access to affordable, safe, and sustainable housing options!

Breeder Denies Wrongdoing
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
The breeder of the pit bull that was responsible for the death of a young child denies any wrongdoing on behalf of the dog. Niko, the dog, recently attacked and killed the 4-year old daughter of the dog's owner. And while many are blaming the dog and its aggressive parent, Kimbo, the breeder remains steadfast that other factors are to blame:
'I know everyone is blaming Kimbo, and I don't think it's right,' said Gustavo Castro, a California man, in a conversation via Facebook messenger.
Click here to follow the full coverage by Robert McClendon, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.
Although Pit Bulls are often viewed as an aggressive breed by nature, many contend that it is the environment just as much as the biology that can cause a dog to be aggressive towards humans. According to the ASPCA:
Pit bulls were genetically selected for their fighting ability. What does this mean? It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs, that they’re unpredictably aggressive or that they will always fight to the death. These are all common myths about pit bulls. It does mean that they may be easily encouraged to fight with other dogs.
The best way to prevent the development of aggressive behavior toward other dogs is to focus on early socialization.
So what's your opinion on the matter? Should dog owners and/or breeders be blamed in the aftermath of tragedy? Post your comments below.

Several New Vietnamese Restaurants Storm into New Orleans
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
As part of an exciting trend that represents New Orleans culinary scene growing even more diverse, several new Vietnamese restaurants are now open or are scheduled to open in the coming months. Five of these new destinations were recently featured on nola.com, and are as follows:
Ba Chi Canteen
7900 Maple St., 504.373.5628
Opened: April 2013
Owners Quinn Nguyen and Phat Vu broke out from Tan Dinh, the West Bank favorite, to open Ba Chi Canteen in Uptown New Orleans last spring. Where Tan Dinh’s menu underscores the French influence on Vietnamese cuisine, Ba Chi’s pushes the multicultural possibilities into other parts of Asia — Korean, Thai and Japanese flavors permeate the menu — and even Latin America. Bao steamed buns have been trending across the country for years. Here they’re billed as “bacos.”
Mint Modern Vietnamese Bistro & Bar
5100 Freret St., New Orleans, 504.218.5534
Opened: January 2014
Among the Vietnamese newcomers, Mint is among the most playful. Here the steamed buns are billed as “sliders”; I’m partial to the ones with pork belly. There is also a kimchi-topped hamburger and a Vietnamese-Thai riff on chicken and waffles. But you don’t have to wager your entire night based on the success of Mint’s playful inventions. The menu is built around a wide selection of pho, bánh mì and bun.
MoPho
514 City Park Ave., New Orleans, 504.482.6845
Opened: January 2014
MoPho is arguably the most ambitious of this new breed of restaurant, by virtue of chef ownerMichael Gulotta’s menu as well as the fact that he wasn’t born to this cuisine. Gulotta, a former Restaurant August chef de cuisine, brings high-grade technique to bear on the casual restaurant’s fancifully creative takes on pho (try yours enriched with mustard greens), rice and noodle bowls (blue crab and beef cheeks are both protein options) and banh mi po-boys (roast tofu with blackbean mayo is one). The crispy-salty-sweet chicken wings highlights a line-up of Vietnamese-inspired appetizers and bar snacks.
Namese
4077 Tulane Ave., 504.483.8899
Opened: December 2013
Hieu Doan’s vision of a Vietnamese restaurant for a changing New Orleans includes fried calamari with wasabi cream, papaya salads threaded with fresh picked herbs and a version of a Cubano sandwich with braised duck, house cured bacon and Vietnamese-style pickled vegetables. But on early visits, the traditional dishes — pho with oxtail, vermicelli noodles topped with fried egg rolls — have been just as impressive.
Pho Orchid
2135 St. Charles Ave., 504.609.3710
Opened: February 2014
This new restaurant, a sister to Pho Orchid Express on Airline Drive, was packed with Mardi Gras parade revelers the night I tried it. Fried chicken wings were particularly popular, and with good reason; they come with a dish of the sublimely simple, inexplicably underused Vietnamese dipping sauce made of lime juice mixed with salt and black pepper. The roast duck tacos — Pho Orchid’s answer to Ba Chi’s “bacos” — are a pared back version of a more famous dish from Peking, China. The brisket pho’s broth was clear but rich in flavor.
While I haven't dined at any of these establishments just yet, I've received several recommendations for the very recently opened MoPho near City Park, and Ba Chi Canteen on Maple. Cheers to the always growing and diversifying culinary scene in New Orleans!

It's Official! Jimmy Graham Gets Saints Franchise Tag!
By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
In an expected but nonetheless welcomed announcement for New Orleans Saints fans, Jimmy Graham will receive the franchise tag ahead of Monday's league deadline. This comes in the wake of several weeks of contract negotiations between the team and the star tight end.
However, although fans can rest assured that their dominant offensive force will be wearing black and gold for the foreseeable future, the battle isn't over yet. According to ESPN.com's News Service, the two parties are still divided over whether Graham will be classified as a Tight End of Wide Receiver. And, interestingly, it actually does matter what positions a player is labeled as:
The franchise tags for tight ends and receivers are expected to be about $6.7 million and $11.5 million, respectively. A favorable ruling would give one side serious leverage in long-term contract negotiations.
In what might be a statement that will foreshadow the intensity oft he weeks ahead, General Manager Mickey Loomis was seems convinced that their Pro Bowler is a Tight End. "Isn't that what we drafted him as? Isn't that what he made the Pro Bowl as? That's what we see him as, a tight end."
But, Graham and his agent seem to have a compelling argument at their disposal as well:
Graham's camp would counter that the league's collective bargaining agreement specifically states the franchise tag designation is based on the position "at which the franchise player participated in the most plays during the prior league year."
If the two sides can't come to an agreement, a neutral, third-party arbitrator would be retained to hear arguments and make a final ruling.
Graham and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, likely will file a grievance through the players' association, asking that Graham be considered a receiver because he lined up out wide or in the slot on 67 percent of his snaps last season.
Regardless of how much he gets paid, this Saints fan is ecstatic that he will continue his career in the Big Easy!

By Joey Lehrman | Email the Author | Follow on Twitter
As The LEGO Movie wraps up its first weekend at the box office, moviegoers and critics alike seem to be in unison, singing a collective praise for what some are calling "the best animated movie" in years. Peter Paras, of E Online, even goes as far as listing several reasons for why this movie is one of Pixar's best in years:
The Amazing Assembly of Voice Talent, including Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman in lead roles;
Inside Jokes with several references to fan favorites in the Pixar repetoire;
The MVP of the movie: UnKitty!
A Superhero presence from the likes of Batman and Gandalf!
The prospect of this being the first in a series of many more Lego films!
Have any of my loyal readers seen the movie yet? If so, what did you think? `Post your comment below!
