When the weather was a little kinder... / johnkateston
Don't ever be afraid of taking a little time to yourself, or time with your loved ones - it's not slacking, it's not lazy and it's not unproductive. It's healthy to have that chill time, and trust me, it's so wonderfully refreshing. I get so much more shit done when I'm happy.
Beautiful photography! I love that when you click on the picture it gives you the camera info etc!
Thanks man, means a lot.
Yeah, bottom left-hand corner whilst on the dashboard. Just be wary though, the focal lengths always tend to be a bit off. For example, if I’ve shot with a 35mm prime on a full-frame body, it still seems to tell me I’ve shot at 37mm, but hey.

What camera/lenses do you shoot with? I want an upgrade and really want to switch from Canon to Nikon!
My main camera body is a Nikon D800, and I generally shoot day-to-day with either a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8. For hikes and landscapes, I always carry my 24-70mm f/2.8.
I favour prime lenses because they make me work a little harder to get the shot I want and to ensure I’m getting the framing I want from the image as I hate cropping in post-process.
In my personal experience, if you like Canon, don’t switch to Nikon, and vice versa. The two brands are completely different in their way of manufacture, and I personally cannot understand Canon cameras for the life of me. I instantly connected with Nikon as the body fitted perfectly with my hand and I was in easy reach of all the functions I needed, with perfectly laid out menus and the like. But of course, it’s always going to be up to you! If you try out another camera and feel comfortable with it, then by all means go get it!
Hope I helped at least a little x

Sometimes sitting watching the sun rise can wipe all your worries, fears and stresses away for a little while, and get your day going in the right direction.

Don't be afraid of taking a new direction - sometimes the best adventures are the spontaneous ones.
your photos make me wanna take the dust off my dslr and start shooting again
Dude, get out there and start a new adventure, taking sick shots along the way.
Love your work! Question: I wanna get a polaroid camera but dunno which one's worth it/ best option? Any input and I'd grateful. I love photography but really want that retro, vintage, gypsy feeling of lazy summer days, you know? :)
Unfortunately I don't know too much about Polaroids!
With regards to that vintage look, an extremely high percentage of it is the light that you're shooting in and the way that you use it. Film cameras are a great way to begin learning about light. Pop into a charity store or a second-hand camera store and pick up something you feel comfortable with, get out there and start shooting!
Hey! Love your photography, you're very talented :) are you actually from Scotland?
Yo thank you! I am indeed, currently residing in Edinburgh.

Testing out the Arkaig // by johnkateston
What advice would you give to someone who feels that their photographs aren't good enough and is feeling disheartened?
Push through - everyone goes through stages of self-doubt and sometimes lack a bit of belief in themselves. It’s only natural, but what separates the good from the great are the people who can get past the barriers that are standing in your way.
It’s only natural to sometimes lack a bit of belief in yourself, but my main advice would be to push through. Get round that wall that’s preventing you from getting further ahead, because whatever’s on the other side is something awesome. You might have to scramble to get over that wall, or maybe fall down a few times, maybe even it’s just a long walk round, but you’ll get there, as long as you’re determined enough to try.
Don’t be afraid of other people’s opinions, surround yourself with positive people who’ll give you constructive criticism and help you get to where you want to be.
Have a little faith and try out some new things!
Good luck homie, and if you ever need any more help with anything, drop me a message off-anon!
Hey! I am quite interested in photography and I was wondering if you have any good tips for beginners?
Yo, of course!
I'd say that first off, you wanna get yourself in there - whatever it is that you want to shoot, get right in, surround yourself with it. Secondly, ignore those idiots that say you need top of the range kit to produce good photographs. Whatever camera you have with you is the best camera, be it the camera on your phone, a disposable, your parents old film camera, or a DLSR. It honestly doesn't matter, but start from the bottom and work your way up - that way, you're learning quicker as you're not getting overwhelmed by too much at one time.
Take your time with stuff, and make sure you're proud of your own work. It's easy to get down from comparing it to other people's work, but use their art as inspiration. Look deeper and try and figure out what you like about their work and what you don't.
Carve your own path, that's the best advice I can give - just do what you love, shoot the scenes you want to, and don't be afraid to take a couple of risks along the way.
Good luck buddy!
