bringing out the “is mastercard an ally?” tweet to make it about hockey players in this moment is actually insulting lol you think we’re all dumb and surprised they’re conservative? no, it’s that we need to be real about how this government is using this team as political pawns and all those guys going along with it and are excited to be used! the national team gm is friends with the fbi director and invited him into the locker room where players families couldn’t even get access to! they’re going to the state of the union not a regular white house visit where the president will use them as propaganda! this is actual sports sociology at work

i just have no patience for any of the “but canada” shit. i don’t care what individual idiotic views any members of team canada hold, if they won there’d be no videos of members of the fascist government partying in the locker room with them. mark carney wouldn’t be on social media threatening the united states. it has nothing to do with anyone’s individual views, their victory would not have been weaponized to spread propaganda.

Serious question, do you wholeheartedly believe that your team Canada hockey players are any less conservative? Because they aren’t. They willingly play for and promote an organization that’s okay with covering sexual assault. They willingly play for and promote a country who has its own slew of controversy and corruption embedded into its own political system. Stop acting as if you’re morally above people just because you support a different evil organization.

You think I don’t know that? Lol. I promise you, I am very aware that Team Canada isn’t any better. Hockey Canada has its own deeply messed up history and I’ve never denied that. Please don’t talk to me like I’m naive or morally grandstanding. I know exactly what Canada has done.

But that’s not what we’re talking about right now.

Being angry about Team USA’s choices and specifically what happened in that locker room does not suddenly mean I think Team (Canada) is some morally superior utopia.

It’s not a competition of which country is less terrible. Both can have serious issues. Both can deserve criticism.

Right now, I’m reacting to Team USA. I’m reacting to the phone call that happened in their locker room. I’m reacting to the misogynistic comments about women. I’m reacting to the “northern border” remarks. That’s the situation at hand.

Pointing at Team Canada every time someone criticizes Team USA feels like deflection.

Acknowledging Canada’s problems does not cancel out what happened here. We can hold multiple truths at once: Canada has done awful things. Team USA players can also say and do awful things. Calling one out doesn’t excuse the other.

And if we’re being honest? Hockey culture across the board has a conservatism and misogyny problem. That’s not exclusive to one flag. So yes, if I’m criticizing Team USA players for misogyny or conservative politics that harm people, that energy applies to Team Canada players too. No one is getting a free pass from me just because they wear a different jersey!!

But this conversation, in this moment, is about Team USA. That’s it.

I’m allowed to be upset about a specific incident without turning it into a comparative morality debate between countries. Respect what I’m actually reacting to instead of redirecting it somewhere else.
