I think we felt we were attracted to Long John Silver as our entry point. In Silver’s story, there’s this huge presence that hovers over all of it without ever being portrayed in any detail and that’s Captain Flint — the book almost reads like a sequel.

It’s interesting because of all people, Silver – who has for the whole show been so adept at understanding and reading other people – he’s the one who cannot talk about himself. Of all of the main characters – and each one has a different way of recounting their back-stories – Silver is the only one who cannot go there, he is the only one who cannot speak of what has happened to him. Well, I think it suggests horror from another direction. Whatever happened to Silver was so terrible that it essentially broke his ability to exist within his own story. I think there is something that is fundamentally therapeutic about existing in a story. It’s normal; it’s a part of the human condition. When you find your place in a narrative, you almost necessarily feel like you make sense. And so I think whatever it was that happened to him that made him incapable of reconciling that – that is his trauma. His backstory was that he was removed from his own story. And his curse is that he is stuck in someone else’s story that he never really wanted to be in, but now he can’t get out of.

u know, at least black sail let us know that what flint had with thomas was tender and good!!!! that flint, for all he’s suffered from the loss of that relationship, he doesn’t regret it!!! he’s enraged because he no longer has that! no longer has that close relationship with another man, doesn’t have that love that’s the truest love he’s ever known

and then they start making those parallels with him and silver, though now flint is the one who would change the world and silver is the realist

and they show that his friendship with silver becomes something close and intimate and vulnerable because they’re both a weak spot for the other and that’s why it’s eventually exploited!! by others and by themselves. billy uses it against them and they use it against each other!! and that’s why you can’t say it was nothing or meaningless or a lie! because they truly hurt each other and you can’t do that if it’s not real and don’t love each other!!!

He’s had Thomas, he’s had Mrs. Barlow, and then finally it’s Silver. In the end, that the sort of love of his life really. Not in a romantic way, but he’s found his match.

I think that relationship is meaningful to both of them. It is singular, for both of them. We’ve never seen Silver invest in someone, in this way. So for him, it’s very new. It’s the first one of these relationships that we are aware of. We’ve seen Flint invest in people before, but not in this way, where he has allowed himself to be both Flint and McGraw, openly, and found some measure of comfort in that state. So for him, it’s new, also. I would argue that it’s not a contest, as to which of them felt it more deeply, but I think it was definitely meaningful. Personally, there wasn’t ulterior motives in their affinity for each other. It is genuine and it is complicated, in the way that it’s always complicated when you love someone. We’ve come this far because when Flint and I are of the same mind, there’s no obstacle yet encountered that we cannot surmount. I don’t know why that is. He doesn’t know why it is. But it is. To elevate one of us over the other, even as a fiction, seems to me to be tempting fate in a most dangerous way …A lot has changed since then, but what has not changed is that when a man first needs you and thereafter calls you a friend, a little suspicion is a healthy thing. That’d make a lot more sense if I didn’t need him just as badly as he needs me.
