Every action he has ever taken was informed by this notion, his thoughts shaped by it, and his character formed from it
The root of the idea came from the fact that his parents had never intended his birth, a fact that became all the more evident as he grew older
Their parenting style towards him could, at best, be described as benign neglect
Jack spent most of his time on his own, getting in and out of trouble and further embarrassing and discouraging his parents from making any efforts with him
Jack was a troubled kid and, like his very birth, every decision he made was a mistake
The only person who ever seemed to care was Jack’s brother, Elias, twelve years older and a genius
Elias always remembered birthdays and graduations. He always came with advice and had Jack bailed out when, as he got older, he got arrested a few times
Elias talked sense into him, gave him a sense of direction and, more importantly, gave him a purpose.
Still, Jack remained conscious of the fact that he couldn’t keep up with Elias. Always compared to his prodigy big brother (which only emphasized his own inadequacies), Jack had a sense of chasing he could never catch
Elias’ acceptance was, perhaps, the next best thing and he craved it, sought to earn it
Jack was born twelve years after his older brother, to parents emotionally finished with child rearing
As such, he was largely left to his own devices, grown almost as though he were an only child
Though intelligent, Jack’s education was neglected. Compared to his child prodigy, Jack seemed like nothing special, being of a more average mental capacity
His brain was geared less towards the intellectual and a more hands on resourcefulness
He’s good at tinkering with things, figuring things out, but he has trouble putting thoughts into words
Jack doesn’t think of himself as particularly intelligent, either, buying into the way he was raised and having no one to whom to compare himself besides a genius who was over a decade older, as a child
When Jack was still a child, Elias took him aside and told him in confidence about the existence of people with extraordinary abilities and that Elias wanted, more than anything, to someday help these people
Jack had never felt so trusted, so relied upon
It was the first real time anyone had really taken him into their confidence and remains for Jack a seminal moment in his life
As he grew older and older, Elias took Jack more and more under his wing, directing him towards the skills at which Jack excelled
Elias seemed to naturally understand the way Jack’s mind was geared and embrace it in a way their parents never had
He encouraged Jack and showed him how to put his talents to good use
Before Jack even knew it, he was working for Elias and – at first – he was proud
He hardly even noticed as his jobs got darker and darker, step by step
And when he finally did, he did his best to turn a blind eye
Jack was doing this for his brother
In all honesty, Jack’s primary and unquestioning loyalty in life has always been to Elias
Only once was that connection ever rivaled
About a half decade ago, Jack met a young woman named Rachel Clarke
She made Jack feel sane and accepted in a way he never had before
Before long, they were dating and before he knew it, it was serious
(Though in all honesty, Jack doesn’t really date at all so the fact that she was his official girlfriend at all was actually a big deal tbqh)
Jack’s family didn’t approve of her – not even Elias seemed enthused (though he was by far the most accepting) – and the whole thing put an even greater strain on the already tenuous Turner connection
Only about a year in, Rachel got pregnant
Jack didn’t know anything about fatherhood and the idea definitely messed with him a bit, esp coming on the heels of Rita Holland’s concerns and prophecies regarding it and her subsequent death
Already shaken, when Jack’s supposed ally, Alek Stark, turned on him and attacked him, leaving him for dead in the street did the rest
When he recovered, Jack lay in the hospital thinking about all that had been said, all that had happened
He was never going to be a good father to Pippa, though he’d never wanted anything more desperately, and on top of that he was a constant danger to his new family
He knew Rachel’s own concerns about family life and fatherhood and he didn’t need to make her life any harder than he already had, little less endanger it
How could he ever live with himself if anything ever happened to either of them?
The next time he saw Rachel, he ended it simply and directly, leaving her to form her own opinions about his reasons
He couldn’t tell her why – it’d defeat the whole purpose of the break up
Pippa is a toddler and it kills him that he’s missed most of her growing up, but he tells himself it’s the only reason she’d lived as long as she has
He calls and talks for a few minutes from random places to make sure they’re ok before just as abruptly hanging up
And occasionally he’ll stop by for an equally abrupt visit
Only around them does his gruffness die away into a sort of tenderness all his own
The rest of the time, Jack is mostly quiet but direct and always on target
He doesn’t really do distractions
He first came to this town about six or seven years ago to scope out the area after hearing of Rita Holland’s abilities from her step-daughter
He’d met Sara on the road, like everyone else
She’d been on the run and he’d been driving hard
They spent some time together, sharing food, water, trust, and a bed and she’d complained to him of her step-mother in Washington to claimed to have precognition
He’d brought the whole thing to Elias and first chance they got, they’d scoped it out
In all honesty, Jack hasn’t really been back here to stay more than a handful of days, since he ended things with Rachel
He’s not sure how to handle anything
Especially now that he’s after the daughter of a woman he helped murder, the sister of his former lover
And a friend to the mother of his only child
His brother still trusts Alek Stark, even after the man tried to kill him, but Jack never will again
Things are different now and they can never go back to the way they are
For once in his life, Jack’s clear direction is gone
For once, he doesn’t know what he’s going to do
