Mods can be intimidating if you’ve never used them before. They’re files that add features, change mechanics, make cosmetic and content changes, and more. A lot of mods require SMAPI (Stardew Modding Application Programming Interface), a third-party application. This might make some people wary of using it, but using it can really enhance your SDV experience!
Here’s why you should use SMAPI:
There are lots of cool mods out there.
Are you tired of hunting down that one villager you wanna talk to? This mod shows NPC locations on the map. Isn’t it weird that you can’t stack craftables like kegs and casks? This mod lets you Stack Everything. Ran all the way to the beach only to realize that you forgot something in a chest at home? This mod lets you access your chests, shipping bin, fridge, and junimo huts from wherever you are. Do you find it weird that the townsfolk wear shorts in the middle of winter? Here ya go.
These are just the mods I can think of off the top of my head. There are lots of other SMAPI mods out there with great features, and you can find them right here: Nexus, Chucklefish Mods, Stardew Forums.
Mods are easy to uninstall.
If you decide that a mod just isn’t for you, all you have to do is delete its folder in your game files. Admittedly, there are a few that have a more complicated uninstallation process, but those mods all come with a warning. The vast majority are painless uninstalls.
SMAPI works with Steam/GOG achievements.
Just follow SMAPI’s installation instructions, and you’ll have no problems!
The modding community is friendly and helpful!
You can ask for help on Discord, the SDV Forums, or even reach out to individual modders if you need assistance. You won’t get any heat for being a newbie since everyone’s pretty chill. You could even make some friends there!
The only drawback I can think of is the increase in boot-up time. Using a lot of mods (for example, I currently have 89 installed haha) can make the game take a while to open. Otherwise, there’s really no reason not to use it (unless you really just don’t wanna). Feel free to ask me any of your questions!
