The scammers on AO3 seem to be upping their game - now their comments may actually relate specifically to the story. Otherwise the comment follows the usual formula.

On top of this, this is a registered user, which means I can't simply mark the comment as spam. I'll have to manually file a report.

What really galls me is that they must've fed my story through genAI to get relevant commentary.

OP, I know these are two different realms, but this is exactly like the spam I've been getting to my author email. Just swap out a specific fic for a specific book and the wording and tone is exactly the same. (Only the spammer signs off asking for you to talk to them about marketing, not commissioning art).

I don't even have anything useful or insightful to add, just that its so freaky seeing this pop up on my dash. I hate this kind of bot so much, because its so fucking disheartening and you end up feeling gross that they've fed your work into AI to generate this trash.

Sokoto state, a majority Muslim state in north-west Nigeria was bombed on Christmas day. It is still unclear how many bombs were dropped and where. Confirmed is a bomb dropped on a Mosque in Jabo, killing 5 people.

Trump has claimed that this is in retaliation of the "Christian genocide" happening in Nigeria, committed by "radical Islamists" of the ISIL (ISIS), and the specific choosing of Christmas day was to reify that this is a religious based retaliation.

This Christmas, I am in Nigeria. My family is majority Christian. We are without fear of being persecuted on the basis of our religion. So, what is going on?

There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria. Nigeria is a complex country that faces a lot of violence, exploitation and subsequent neglect from our government. But it is not Christians being targeted in our country. This insidious piece of misinformation has been dutifully organised by US officials for months and gained steam on platforms like X and Truth Social.

I do not believe though, that this action was done to fight Islamic terrorists or protect Nigerian Christians. The reason being:

Sokoto state is not a state with ISIL activity.

This is another display of US throwing its weight around, conveniently, onto the most oil-rich country in Africa.

Do not believe everything the US tells you about its foreign affairs. The US will gladly spill blood on the flimsiest of justifications just to continue gorging its empire.

Please keep love in your hearts for the Nigerian people.

Besides trying to get your personal information and/or get you to “commission” them (you will almost certainly not get what you paid for, or it will be just AI-generated stuff), the only reason I can think of as to why these bots would do this, is because they want to use/steal your works to train their AI, and in order for them to avoid getting a copyright strike (since the works you create are YOUR OWN—even if it’s fanfiction of other people’s copyrighted characters—you can absolutely copyright strike anybody who steals your fics), they want you to delete your works off the internet.

Once the original material, which in this case is your fic, is deleted, it becomes way more difficult and complicated for you to claim ownership of your own work. Because it’s already been deleted. There’s no proof that you posted it first.

The bottom line, the bots are trying to get you to delete your works so that it would be easier for them to steal your works to train their AI without getting hit with a copyright strike from you.

Don’t delete your works.

This my "fic" is actually a collection of art and there is no plot or storyline. So what is written in the comment is complete nonsense.

The accidentally reported you scam also runs around sending asks if your DMs are closed. If you get this ask:

“Hey there! I just want to let you know that I accidentally reported your account when I meant to report someone else. It was a mistake and I hope it didn’t cause any issues. Message me if you want to see the ticket I received from tumblr can't send you a message I don't know why”

This is a scam ask! It is part of the fake report scam and is intended for you to message the user and then contact a discord account. Please inform anyone who’s been sent this ask and let them know it’s a scam and not to message the sender. They know why they can’t sent you a DM. It’s because either you closed it or their messages got closed by the spam filter.

remember, folks, if you receive:

- unnecessarily vitriolic yet suspiciously unspecific hate comments

- namedropped AI accusations (Claude is a popular one)

- hate comments comparing/degrading your work to someone else’s on a namedropped website

- users interested in making you fanart so long as you add them on discord

you have received a spam comment, so block the user, and delete the comment.

I don't know if this is covered in the points above but also be aware of guests using an actual user's name to leave nasty comments accusing fic writers of using ai:

Most people I know will use their account, not anon/guest and the bad comment will sound completely different from how they usually type/sound in words anyway. It's either a bad actor or bot.

This comment also makes me laugh because I write ALL of my fics myself 😂 ai sucks why use it when I can try to write the exact scene in my head??? So glad someone warned me of my username being used and I warned the person in the pic that their name was facing the same issue. It also seems to be commented on fandoms/content the og has never touched either btw.

I think the advice above to block and delete is right for comments from guests, but if you get a comment like this from a user account you can report them pretty easy peasy.

I got this comment last night:

Note that they're marked as a registered user and they're soliciting customers for their graphic design services which is against the TOS (commercial activities). Which means I can report them and hopefully get them either to stop or banned so they can't harass other writers.

Click through to the comment (I use the "go to thread starting from this comment" link)

Scroll down to the footer. Under Contact Us, click "Policy Questions & Abuse Reports"

This takes you to a pre-populated form. It should show your user name, email, language, and the link to the comment you're reporting. All you need to do is enter which part of the TOS the comment violates (they provide some common examples) and describe what you're reporting. Then submit. Easy peasy.

I know some of you are balking bc of how nice the commenter sounds, but I promise you it's okay to report. The AO3 team will investigate and they'll send a warning email if they agree there's been a violation. They aren't like tumblr where they will just nuke a blog from orbit without warning. There is a process and they follow it and it's okay to help them enforce their terms of service. Even if this commenter is completely well-meaning it's okay to let staff give them a slap on the wrist and make sure they know what they can and can't do on AO3. This helps keep AO3 free from spammers, advertisers, and scam artists, and protects all of us from retaliatory legal issues.
