The better everything gets

Comedy writing is like playing the guitar for me. You say st bernard dog puppies and I can come up with the perfect joke. I play guitar as a relaxation. The more I do, the better I become. The better I become, the more I desire to play the guitar. The same thing is applied to comedy.

Sometimes the work may not produce material that works. But that is the process. You have to learn to believe that sometimes the writing session comes up without truly satisfying matter. You have to brush it off and go back the next day. Each one goes through that. The superior you get the fewer encounters you have with that kind of failure, but it does happen.

Just some things

The dichotomy between the fun and the reward of getting the laugh against the sometimes tedious and annoying process of comedy writing is often misunderstood. For me, Comedy writing is fun, but it's also work. Most comedians and comedy writers do not think of it as work because they are just that good at it, it's natural to them. You have to put in the work to reap the rewards. The more work you do, the bigger and better the rewards become.

Become Better

Comedy writing is rewarding. I started my career because I like to get people to laugh. There is no better emotion than writing a joke and receiving a grateful laugh. The biggest laugh from a crowd I have ever received was surprisingly at a casino; it was the best feeling. Okay, perhaps there is a better feeling but that belongs in a different blog.

Anyway - this takes us to an open mic; I did a couple of months ago (like what is happening here in the video). It was a strange little bar, made from a former beauty parlor, and you can still get your nails done there, talk about weird. As a result, it is kind of a hipper, less male based crowd than several other bars. I was prepping for a show, so I did 10 minutes of my set mostly about the odd things women do on social media to make they look attractive. I made fun of profile pics that just show one eye, or big pout lips, or sexy shoes and explain that those were all terrible ideas for attracting men.

A sample. The guy is good, but of course knowing (or at least understanding the audience where you’re gonna do the stand up comic gig) would help squeeze more laughs and get you a connection with your audience.

Wrong material, Wrong Crowd

In my short time doing stand-up, I have learned that every room has its vibe. Older crowds, younger crowds, dumber crowds. You are not doing your job as a comedian if you are blind to not notice your crowd. Though you may polish your set, you must tailor your material to the people you are trying to get a laugh from.

I will admit that I do not actually like that. I like telling jokes the way I think they are funny, I mean I wrote them, so I think I'm the best judge of them. I probably would not have the balls to go on stage in the first place. Still, that is the wrong approach. No one inquires you to get up there. No one likes pandering, but if you wish these people to cackle, you may have to meet them halfway, at least.

Mistakes

Occasionally an audience wants to be woken up, but there is a good line in between crowd work and division that make them hate you," Bread said while prepping the candy mass for our female friend. I just played an appointment party where the groom got much drunk and started booing all the comics. I got crazy and insulted the whole wedding party.

There are two main mistakes comedians and writers make when writing comedy.

• Giving up too quickly.

• Trying to find amazing funny to write about.

I learned these quite a few years ago. I was touring with a man who used to be the head writer on a comedy show. I wrote a joke concerning a party that I was pretty proud of. He kept repeating that I had put three hours in on the joke. By the time, I was done I had 30 lines for that one joke, and the more I worked on it, the funnier they became.

Don't Turn on the Crowd

OK, I a moment ago blew my wad with what I've learned in my four months of stand up, so it is time to turn it over to others.

Our next list entry comes to us from NYC based comic Bread Foster, who runs the "No Apologies" show at Gotham Comedy Club. I've not at all written an article full of quotes, and I'm not going to begin now. I'm not a journalist, or even sober. Journalism bores me, so let's now say I was recently talking to Bread while tag-teaming supermodels on a mass of cocaine and candy, and here is a breakdown and an untrustworthy paraphrase of his thoughts on the matter (more on next post, tried breaking it down for easier reading)

Always wanted to do this

I have wanted to write about stand-up comedy ever since I started doing it a few months back. Nevertheless, as a beginner to the craft, I didn't feel competent to give anyone advice. My understanding comes more from being funny online, and not just when I put the glasses on my junk throughout a session of Chatroulette.

I suggest it’s one thing to give my weekly seminar on how to write flawless, persuasive, and hilarious articles, but telling the public how to be a success on stage is a different matter.

The things that matter

While watching this discussion, I realized that comedians worry about many of the similar things that we all do when it comes to writing, no matter what the subject. They gripe over things like:

• Will my audience like my material?

• How do I live up to prospect after a better presentation?

• How do you create a good joke stick?

If the jokes you tell aren’t linking, your comedic occupation is over. Similarly, if the stories you inform do not resound, people won't get the point you are trying to get across. Because of these similarities, there is a much we can learn from comedians concerning how to tell an excellent story.

I find inspiration in the work of my favorite writers, and I love learning about the creative practice of great storytellers. I just saw a video in which comedians Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, and Louis C.K discussed the creative practice of comedy; it was quite entertaining.
