I don’t think people realize how much of an impact this kind of support can have, I don’t think everyone knows what these little things can mean to us.

It may just be me, I don’t know. But every single time I see this on my dash or on someone’s blog or anywhere else, I kind of just breathe a sigh of relief. That’s one more person who cares. That’s one more person who doesn’t hate me.

Because it means so much, especially when all the media is spewing out is that I’m a terrible person and no one wants people like me near them. It means so much because I’m tired of people who won’t sit next to me in class, or who choose to join the longer line at the grocery store because they don’t want to be beside me and my family. It means so much when I have to lift my head any time someone says the words Islam or Muslim because I’m scared that they’ll say something that’ll hurt, when I have to pay attention to the news because who knows what so and so is saying now, who knows which of my people are being attacked now, who knows what’s going to happen to me now.

It means so much because I’ve been given the idea that the world is against me. And a huge part of it may be, but at least I’ve been reminded that some of it, just a small group of people, acknowledges that I’m a person too. That people like me are just that, people.

Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. But now you do, so thank you for believing that I’m human when so many people don’t.

Les Amis and how well they handle spicy food:

Enjolras: He’s merciless when it comes to spicy food. It’s the soul of his endless fiery passion... someone, get him a glass of milk. (Honestly, he’ll eat whatever Grantaire cooks for him.)

Grantaire: He likes it just fine and probably would devour a giant bag of Hot Cheetos while drunk. Call him a masochist, but he needs it.

Courfeyrac: He literally cannot and will probably whine like a child. He prefers being the “spicy” one rather than eating the spicy stuff.

Combeferre: It’s scary how nonchalantly he’ll be eating his spicy food while reading a book. He could literally be eating a ghost pepper without shedding a single tear.

Joly: He’d much rather avoid it altogether rather than end up in a hospital because his eyes are watering too much. He’s the one filling everyone else’s glasses with milk.

Bossuet: Sure, he can handle it... sure. He’ll end up collapsing and faceplanting in a pile of tissues, but sure.

Feuilly: Don’t doubt this man’s ability to eat spicy food. His name literally has “fire” in it, so go figure.

Bahorel: He tries so hard, but simply can’t beat Feuilly, or Grantaire, or Combeferre when it comes to handling spicy food. He’ll preserve his dignity in other ways.

Jehan: He’ll bite into a pepper and then write an elegy dedicated to his tongue. And then write a sonnet dedicated to milk.

I am going to speak from my own experience in the lesmis fandom so what I will say will not seem universal etc, I know some people are very aware and respectful of these issues in the fandom

From what I have seen Grantaire’s alcoholism is treated as a character trait or as a quirky joke (like, the “Grantaire, put the bottle down” line, which seems to have become a sort of a meme in the fandom? at least it is used to base enjoltaire dynamics and I know it can be a funny line, but when it becomes meme-fied or becomes a core characteristic of enjoltaire, it becomes really disrespectful imo)

Because from what I have seen (and no I dont have screenshots or I dont keep names of tumblr/twitter/ig users because? I dont keep that in my head lol), Grantaire is seen as a man whose alcoholism is an essential part of his being and as someone who isn’t alcoholic myself, but know people who are (not to mention that alcohol is a touchy topic for me and it can sometimes be triggering), it really makes me feel uneasy and it is part of why I never really felt good in the lesmis fandom and why I, most of the time, stay away from it

Because when people are treating alcoholism, a living and awful addiction which can be deadly, as a sort of joke, or a meme, or a personality trait, or an essential part of one’s being, it becomes quickly disrespectful or triggering

In my humble opinion, the lesmis fandom should have less fanfictions using Grantaire’s alcohol problem as a plot device, and more fanfictions focusing on his recovery. It really amazes me how little I see posts about Grantaire’s potential recovery, compared to the overwhelming number of posts about his addiction. Overall, it makes the fandom look like it is not a safe space for alcoholic people or people with addiction, even though it 100% should be if we were to align with the show’s values
