I think what the town needs is less people trying to involve themselves in other’s people’s business. Seriously. I got questioned in where I was going with the canned food I had, like I was pulling some sort of scandal.
Did it lead to anything?

“Can you tell me what’s been going on here? Seems a mess.”
“I don’t know much myself, but there’s restrictions on quite a lot here. Most of it is towards what resources others can receive, but there’s also been... violence. A lot of it.”
“Have you heard of the purge yet?”

“You sure you don’t want a drink? It’ll be worth the hangover. I think.”
Not for me. I’m a lightweight.
One drink’s enough for me to turn into the worst company possible, but thank you for the offer.

“And what would you like us doing? Holding hands and singing campfire songs? Or maybe writing a petition. The mayor could keep the list of signatures as a hit list.”
“No, but a meeting of sorts couldn’t hurt. Or at least we can help those with needs.”
“There are too many people starving. Why can’t we share with each other?”

“Yeah, well I’ll drink to that.”

“I think I’ll hold off for now...”

Surprise Visit | Leah & Jonas

Leah was becoming slowly overwhelmed in her life. It wasn’t hard for her to be — she spent most of her waking hours at the hospital to make up for the fact that most of the hospital’s employees were either killed in the chaos outside or just refused to come to work anymore. It was understandable. Why work to save strangers that would potentially come up and kill you another night? But Leah felt that she had an obligation. She could just take power naps as she went along, drink pots of coffee one after the other, it would just be a long, long shift.
But apart from that, she had to worry about her son. Quinn was throwing out those statements of how he didn’t want to be alive anymore. Leah hadn’t expected Valerie’s death to have such an impact on him. He hadn’t even talked about knowing her that well before that point… not that he talked to her much about anything. But Leah was able to at least gauge his friendships a little.
She was almost ready to finally take a break — the first one in a good four hours — when she heard her name. It was a familiar voice, one that she couldn’t quite recognize at first. But when she saw Jonas holding her daughter — Leah quickly rushed to them to take Vivian from him. “What happened?” she asked, trying to keep herself from sounding frantic.
Before Jonas could draw a reply from the stranger Leah was at his side. She looked tired. He slowly transferred Vivian into her arms, thinking of what to say. He didn’t want to cause Leah anymore trouble than he already seemed to be doing, but Vivian was her daughter. If anything happened to her Leah would want to know, right? Even if it may have been Jonas over analyzing her symptoms. His eyes stayed on the baby as he spoke, trying to explain his worry. “She’s been crying for a while now. I’ve checked everything I’ve could.” Jonas stepped closer to take another look at Vivian. “I’m sorry. I may be overthinking this.”

Surprise Visit | Leah & Jonas
Jonas enjoyed caring for Vivian. She was sweet, adorably laughing when something interesting caught her attention. Her smile, her simple happiness, brought Jonas hope. He always had hope tied tightly to his heart. It lived deep within him, but dampened quickly with the unhappiness of others. Jonas could never help the helpless need, the sense of duty, that came with his caring nature. He would risk his life for a stranger, even the few callous people he’d engaged in conversation with. The troubles he faced weren’t stopping him from helping when he could, from trying to give back as much as he took. Even now he was willing to work for almost nothing for Leah and her family. Taking care of Vivian while her family worked wasn’t a big deal. Jonas loved kids, loved how naturally it came to him. It was the only thing he’d ever been good at, in fact.
Unfortunately for Jonas he wasn’t trained in the medical field. He may have dealt with many types of children, but sick ones? Well, there was only one place to go when they weren’t looking well. Jonas held Vivian closely, carefully smoothing her bright hair back. She cried, tears wetting her red face. The man frowned, his concern for her showing. He had checked everything he possibly could. Her diaper, her formula, her temperature. Anything. Yet her crying hadn’t fully stopped in an hour. Jonas knew he had to take her to the hospital. It wouldn’t be good to stay home until Leah could come home. He’d have to go to her. Jonas packed everything he needed, once again attempting to soothe Vivian as he began to make his way towards the hospital.
When Jonas entered the hospital, with the excuse of being connected to Doctor Jones, he went straight to the desk, cradling a sniffling Vivian in my his arms. “I need to see Doctor Jones immediately. Please. This is an emergency.”

Sorry, Jonas. Look, want to go to some place to eat to forget about it?
It’s okay. Uh, sure. That’d be nice.

Most likely. Sounds like a more humane death than just being flat out murdered, doesn’t it?
I rather not think of death at all, honestly.

Yikes. Sorry if she was your big welcoming committee.
But if she had to be left behind by a mayor’s employee, another trained cop — I don’t know. It just seems unlikely that she’s still alive.
It’s fine. Don’t apologize.
Wait. She was purposely left behind? I hope that isn’t so.

She always seemed cold, but I don’t doubt that she was a good person.
I doubt it. We’d just risk more people trying to save someone that’s probably already dead.
Did she..? I don’t know. Talking to her made things easier...
We can’t know that. I was out there at one point. It’s sort of a hard life, but if you’re strong you’ll make it.. Clementine seemed strong. She can’t be dead.

“It doesn’t make it bad. Expect violence over everything now. People are desperate.”
“Of course people are desperate, but we could work together. All of us.”

I heard it was one of our old cops, Clem. I don’t know if you’d know her.
Clementine? I-I know her. We’ve only spoken a few times, but.. she’s a good person.
It’s so dangerous out there. Is anyone going to go search for her?
grimaldianthony:
“Nice to know I’m not alone with it, then.”
“Stuck. That’s a good way to put it. Sums up how I’m feeling pretty damn well.”
“Definitely not alone.”
“We all get stuck at some point. Things will hopefully turn out better though.”

So I hear we have people going missing out on those supply runs?
How horrible. Who’s missing exactly?
If you were personally starving, had kids that were starving just as bad would you lend a hand to someone in the same situation? Or would you try to keep your own family alive before people you barely know?
Family first. Always... I suppose I’m seeing your point more clearly. It doesn’t make this any better though. I wish there was a quick fix.
