Zaha Hadid had already reached rockstar status in world of architecture. Her innumerable prizes include the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which her own website describes as “the Nobel Prize of architecture.” Today (Sept. 24), she also became the first women in 167 years to win the Royal Gold Medal award presented by the Royal Institute of British Architects for a body of work. Do it for the world: Architects and social responsibility
Each and every one of us has a responsibility to take care of our world. It is no secret that our planet is succumbing to the threats of global warming and environmental degradation, which is mainly caused by human neglect and abuse. However, it is never too late to do something about it. Many individuals, organizations, and governments have been supporting the green movement. So what is the role of architects in this advocacy?
Responsibility in practice
The construction of cities, commercial or industrial areas, and residential communities is one of the responsibilities of architects. Shifting to greener methods is one of the ways architects can help save the world. By using environmental friendly materials and sustainable designs, architects can create better and healthier places for people to live in. Architects do more than just design spaces for business offices or houses for families; they create livable communities.

Going beyond the call of duty
Another way architects can help the society is by supporting nonprofit organizations and sharing their expertise in design and in providing the needs of their clients. Beauty need not equate to large expenses. There are ways to create beautiful things using sustainable and affordable materials.
