MediaLink at The Whitney - NYC Event Photography Post COVID

On Tuesday we photographed MediaLink’s conference on digital media, advertising, investment, and emerging platforms at the Whitney Museum in Manhattan, NY. As NYC Event Photographers we are experienced in photographing events of all sizes, length (1 hour to days long events), and complexity. From a single photographer photographing 1 speaker, to a single photographer covering numerous simultaneous events at once, to a team of photographers covering dozens of simultaneous events at multiple locations, Jonathan Heisler Photography is ready. We are experience New York professional event photographers.

Since COVID began in March 2020, the New York event photography scene has been pretty quiet or even non-existent at times. Now that the New York Metro area is vaccinated, events of all types and sizes are coming back. We love the responsibility our clients give us in photographing their events and documenting their stories.

Event Photography takes us to some of the coolest places / venues NYC has to offer, and along the way we photograph icons. Today’s shoot featured Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. Besides photographing the big names, we also photograph:

Registered Dietitian Headshot - Marissa Campbell

Some recent Professional Headshot work photographed in Denver Colorado! No matter where we photograph headshots, the formula is the same. We photograph photos that make our subjects not only looks good, but feel good. Long Island, New York City, or Denver Colorado a quality portrait photo is key!

Marissa Campbell is a Registered Dietitian in Colorado. She works primarily with patients who suffer or are recovering from eating disorders. Marissa was in need updating her website and social platforms with a new photo of herself. She wanted something that looked clean and professional while still feeling casual and inviting.

To give Marissa options, we set up a neutral backdrop and a environmental setup. I worked on blurring the environmental shot and choosing a generic not distracting locations.

Dillon and Leah - Surprise Long Beach,NY Proposal (Long Island)

With the family all together for Thanksgiving, Dillon was ready to take the jump and propose to his girlfriend Leah. Since Dillon and Leah both live in Long Beach, NY and with Dillon’s parents coming to Long Island for the first time, it was sure to be a Long Island Thanksgiving to remember.

Planning this Long Island Thanksgiving Proposal

Down the street from Dillon’s house in Long Beach, NY is a private boardwalk leading to the beach. We chose this location to propose for its privacy and unobstructed view of the beach. We knew this spot would serve as the perfect spot to drop down on one knee, propose, and take great photos.

The week leading up to the proposal, Dillon and I scouted the location and discussed all the details: How he would get Leah out on the walkway, where I’d be discreetly positioned to photograph the moment, and where their families would be hiding nearby to watch the proposal. The day-of, I arrived in Long Beach early to make sure the location was ready and the stage was set. As Dillon and Leah walked up the boardwalk, I let them pass and waited until Dillon was in position. When he dropped to one knee I snapped away.

Recent headshot photography work for Montefiore Medical Center in South Bronx, NY. The above photos were photographed for a piece highlighting the researcher and her work on stem cells at Albert Einstein Medical College. Oyster Bay Family Photos - Sagamore Hill

Long Island Family Photographer is the best job!

I spent the last weekend of fall foliage photographing Maureen, John, and (little) John at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, NY. Our family session started off slow, as 2 year old John had just woken up from his nap and was very shy. When photographing family sessions, I always start off slow and easy, meaning there are no complicated poses. My goal is to get your family comfortable in front of a camera. So, at the start of our family session I capture a lot of candid moments (not posed photos). And throughout the shoot, I strive to photograph a mix of posed photos and candid photos.

Finding a place to photograph a family on Long Island can be a challenge. Many places charge photographers. They require photographers to buy costly single use permits. Oyster Bay's Sagamore Hill does not.

Long Island has countless parks, waterfront views, walking paths, and scenery. However, like much of Long Island, many places are crowded and busy. Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay is a true gem because of its open spaces, natural meadows, and slightly out of the way location. These characteristics make it a great place to photograph a family.

Mike and Amanda - Long Island Gantry Plaza NYC Proposal

Congrats Amanda and Mike!

Mike and I started planning how and where he’d propose week ago. Since Amanda and Matt live together, planning the secret proposal was done mostly while Mike was at work or while he was in the car commuting to his job a teacher on Long Island.

Photographing a New York City Proposal at Gantry Plaza makes me love NYC that much more. The view.

Together, Mike and I, scouted the area, sent texts and emails with screenshots of the area, we watched the weather, planned their day prior the proposal, and their post proposal celebration at a nearby wine bar.

The day finally arrived and I made sure I arrived to Gantry Plaza early.

As I saw Mike and Amanda approach the pier I asked several people if they’d mind moving to the side for a proposal.

Capturing a mini-engagement session after your proposal provides you not only additional photos, but different looks (jacket or no jacket, different poses, and different locations)

We took full advantage of the the beautiful view of the New York skyline on our post proposal shoot.

Robert and Alexis Proposal - Thomas' School of Horsemanship

Fiancé and a Horse!

NIMBLE AS… A HORSE Robert had secretly made arrangements to purchase his girlfriend’s horse “Hudson”, which she houses at Thomas’ School of Horsemanship in Melville. The two of us planned out how to get his fiance-to-be, Alexis, to the stable on a Saturday morning; coordinating around the weather, family, and making sure that Alexis had just happened to get her nails done that week!

Helping to plan a secret proposal

Robert came to me with a plan. “So Trent, my girlfriend is an equestrian and a horse trainer. I’m thinking of proposing to her at the stable she works at…oh, and I’m also going to buy her a horse. I need you to photograph the proposal and help coordinate the setup”

The pathway to this Long Island Proposal

On the day of, Alexis would arrive to find the pathway leading to Hudson’s stable lined with flowers and a plaque engraved “Owned and Loved by the Future Mrs. Rothman.” As if that wasn’t surprise enough, Robert then dropped down on one knee. Prior their arrival, I photographed the details Robert had arranged.

Once Robert and Alexis arrived, and turned around the barn Alexis quickly saw the surprise. I was ready to capture her excitement and photograph Robert as he proposed.

How could Alexis say no?

Will and Anne Secret Central Park Proposal

Will and I decided on Central Park just past the Bow Bridge for 11am on Saturday morning. We kept watching the weather throughout the week as it bucketed rain, and we hoped for the best. In the end it all worked out! The rain ended Friday night, and in the morning some foliage remained, the winds died down, and the sun shined bright.

A few minutes before Will and Anne arrived I politely asked a few lingering tourist if they could move. “A couple is about to come and propose. Do you mind moving to the side?” Precisely on time Will and Anne arrived. The admired the view of the famous Dakota building, and Will dropped to one knee. “YES!” Anne said.

After, the big moment everyone took it all in. There was crying. There was laughter. There was happiness.

After a capturing Will’s proposal, I introduced myself. We took a few posed photos, a few close ups of Anne’s new ring, and then we went for a walk. We headed towards the Bow Bridge and then towards the Bethesda Fountain.

Where to Propose in NYC - COVID Update

The best place to propose in New York City, COVID or no COVID, is outdoors. New York City provides countless iconic locations with uniquely New York backdrops. Outdoor Zoos (Central Park Zoo, Brooklyn Zoo, and the iconic Bronx Zoo), Botanical Gardens, skyline vistas, and parks (Central park, Gantry Plaza, Washington Square Park…) are some of the most popular places to propose, and the safest during COVID.

While proposing in a restaurant is romantic, it entails logistics and careful coordination with the restaurant staff. Most restaurants or indoor facilities will not allow you to take off your mask with others around. They also have ugly dividers and makeshift precautions that will be in your photos. While Grand Central Terminal is usually my go to indoor location when it rains or there is bad weather, during COVID you must wear a mask while in the terminal. This means, you’re going to have masks on in all of your photos.

Currently, there are no tourists in New York City. New York is now for the real New Yorkers, and because of this we now have unobstructed access to the city’s treasures; Central Park Bow Bridge, Gantry Plaza, Brooklyn Waterfront DUMBO, Brooklyn Promenade. When photographing your proposal we no longer have people staring, looking, and gathering with awkward faces in the background.

Central Park Proposal - Patrick and Maggie

Congrats on your engagement Patrick and Maggie!

A “picture perfect quintessential New York City Fall proposal” is how I’d describe photographing Patrick’s proposal to Maggie in Central Park. Patrick was confident in knowing where and how he’d propose. Choosing Central Park’s Model Boat Pond first thing in the morning on a Saturday was ideal for lighting, foliage, and limited crowds.

Post proposal, their family and friends rushed in for hugs and a proper champagne celebration. Once emotions settled, I photographed a mini-engagement style shoot around the pond. We switched up the photo looks by dressing down and taking off their jackets.

Gantry Plaza Long Island City - Sunset Proposal

Congrats Danielle and Nick!

Nick chose Long Island City’s Gantry Plaza for his marriage proposal as the couple lives down the block and they spend most of their free time in the park, along the East River over looking Manhattan. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as the sunset behind New York City on this early Fall evening.

Oyster Bay Cove Architecture Photography

Photographing this magnificent home was different from my usual architecture and design photography assignments. Today’s assignment had overcast weather producing a soft light and grey skies. Also different was I just photographed the exterior with it’s new landscaping and exterior touchups.

McAfee's Knob Sunrise Morning Hike

An early morning sunrise hike on the Appalachian Trail just outside of Roanoke, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains to capture the sunrise at McAfee's Knob. McAfee's Knob is the most photographed location on the Appalachian Trail. Hiking McAfee's Knob is not hard at all. The trail offers a fire road of compact dirt and small rocks, and a more rugged trail with roots, big stone steps, and some mud.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) - Defender Safety

A recent lifestyle and product photoshoot for client Defender Safety capturing Level 1 and Level 3 surgical masks, along with their eye/face protection solutions. On this assignment, my main goal was to photograph the life of a PPE mask from start to finish. The “life cycle” includes everything from the boxes that safely store the masks, how the boxes are opened, the process of how to properly put a mask on, and lastly how/where the masks are used.

Defender Safety’s facial masks are surgical grade with all of the correct certifications. Their masks have seen a huge success during COVID19, both for professional usage and civilian life. On this assignment, we staged a medical office and a dental office by bringing in the equipment needed to portray a healthcare setting; stethoscope, lab coat, scrubs, and product. Using ambiguous rooms at North Shore Comprehensive Dentistry this shoot covered a wide gamut of possible healthcare settings.

Rashad and Sara - Queens Marriage Proposal

Rashad chose Sara’s parents backyard in Queens, NY to propose while visiting from Philadelphia. Prior Sara’s arrival, Rashad decorated the backyard with candles, rose petals, and photos of the two of them. Leading up to his secret proposal, we discussed how I would photograph the moment and how he envisioned proposed.

Pier 25 NYC Marriage Proposal - Phil and Bailey

Congrats Phil and Bailey!

The plan. Every guy has to have a plan on how he is going to propose and how he will have it photographed. Phil’s plan was to get drinks at Pier 25’s Grand Banks on the Hudson River, and then propose. Prior Friday evening, we discussed the location of where he’d pop the question, the pros/cons of each location, and variables. We decided to make final a game time decision that evening based upon how busy the pier was. If the end of the pier was busy we’d move the marriage proposal down the pier to here. If the end of the pier was not busy, Phil would propose just feet away from their table after paying the bill.

With Pier 25 being fairly empty for a beautiful mid September evening (at sunset none the less) we texted one another and confirmed he’d propose at the end of the pier.

Post proposal and candids, I congratulated NYC’s newest engaged couple, and then we did a mini-shoot.
