Think her names funny do you? Well, so did a lot of other people at Ilvermorny. It was this reason that Melissa kept to herself and often lashed out at anyone even daring to snicker at her name. It was funny when he first heard it but unfortunately for Jonathan, she heard him laugh.
From that point on, the two had a heated rivalry at school. He, wanting to go and become a great Auror. She, with the desire to go and become a great Curse Breaker. The two always locked horns and on many occasion found themselves coming toe to toe in a duel.
In third year, after serving a detention with each other for duelling after hours, Jonathan and Melissa were put in a room unsupervised and without wands for three hours. During that time, there was many balls of parchment thrown at one another and many insult called. But after the second hour, they began to really talk and get to know each other. Jonathan even shared his lunch with her. After that day, they had a strange sort of friendship.
Flash forward to their sixth year and Jonathan had now become solid friends with Melissa. The two were thick as thieves and now worked together instead of competing... Even if they did keep score who got the better grades. Jonathan however had realised something; he had feelings for her.
He had crushes on girls before but this was different. This was Melissa, his enemy turned friend and he couldn’t just confess how he felt to her, she’d hit him! Yet, he had never felt this way about anybody.
It came to Halloween of their sixth year and she finally called him out for acting differently around her. It all came out in a blur and he rambled, stumbled and eventually made a complete ass of himself. Yet, she found it funny. She laughed him off and told him not to worry, she had always found him cute.
The two took it very slowly to begin with and weren’t calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend until Easter. But, they were an item. Most of the school were surprised but their friends had called it for years.
When graduation rolled around, they both had different paths in line. She had her sights set on Britain, to become a Curse Breaker for Gringotts. He, the Auror Academy in Salem. They promised long distance but as they would come to learn, it was a terrible idea.
It was Christmas time and Jonathan had travelled all the way to England to see her, to be with her for the holidays. The two had a great Christmas until Melissa finally broke and confessed that the distance wasn’t working and she knew he felt the same. The two talked, argued, duelled and threw bits of paper at each other. It was just like the old days.
She asked him to move to London with her, he could train with the Ministry of Magic and the two of them could make a real go of it. He wanted too, he wanted nothing more than to be with her, yet he couldn’t. His Uncle’s killer was still at large in America.
They broke up but with the promise that if the other was ever in England or America, to look each other up and if they were both still single and if they were both still interested, they’d give it another go.
This is why Jonathan is always single.
