“That sounds like a bad idea. I’m in.”

Ella grinned mischievously at Red, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the market in front of them.  Her stepmother would be away for most of the day and, naturally, the blonde went out to find her best friend the moment she left.  Sweeping could wait until later. They had been walking together for quite a while, catching up on things that happened since they last spent the day together when they happened upon the market in question, and a stand full of all sorts of sweets and baked goods with no one to run it in sight.  Ella’s suggestion that they ‘borrow’ a pastry for themselves followed almost immediately.

She couldn’t stop herself from giggling as they each grabbed a pastry, they looked sticky and delicious and all too tempting.  It was only right they take one, whoever was selling them clearly didn’t appreciate the morsels enough to keep watch over them.  Her thoughts were interrupted and her eyes widened when she heard someone yelling at them from down the road.  She glanced at Red quickly, then up toward the large man who angrily ran toward them, waving his hands in the air. “Run!”, she yelled toward the brunette, taking off as fast as her feet could take her back toward the road they came in on.  She didn’t dare look back, but it didn’t seem like the baker was going to pursue them any further, choosing instead to shout expletives at them as they ran, huffing in frustration.  She looked to her side and erupted in laughter once more, grabbing Red’s hand and pulling her to rest against a nearby tree.  “How is it we always find ourselves in trouble together, Red?” she asked with a smile, taking a bite out of her prize.  “Maybe we should stop trying out my ideas.”

“I’m going to take care of you, okay?”

Her mouth falls slightly open, then it closes again, unsure of what to say. Santana is taken aback by the words, obviously. For as long as she can remember, her life has been about taking care of herself. About surviving, making it through the day. She doesn’t have memories of her mother, let alone the man who impregnated her. The only adult in her life was the woman who sold her as a harlot to Sylvester’s tabern. Her eyebrows furrow, she tilts her head up to meet Brittany’s eyes. She thinks the blonde is naive. A fool, really. If there’s really a mutiny in the works, there’s absolutely no possibility of them making it out of the ship before everything goes down. She knows people consider her to be Schuester’s weak spot, she shudders just thinking about how wrong they are, so she’s likely going to be taken prisoner if someone tries to take Will’s place. She knows her odds, and they don’t look good. It’s her fault after all, for thinking she’d get anything out of this journey. She should’ve stayed working for Sylvester instead.

Yet here is Brittany, the kitchen girl she met a few weeks ago, uttering words foreign to her ears and for the first time she feels like someone might actually be serious about keeping promises, as unrealistic as they are. Despite her odd personality, and the habit of blurting out the most strange things, she looks completely serious this time. Santana swallows, not wanting to discourage the girl in front of her. One day her words might actually come true. “Okay” she sighs sadly, before nodding.

“I can’t imagine being alone anymore."

Brittany paused, only for a moment, at Santana’s words.  The two had been laying peacefully together in Captain Shuesters’ quarters after a particularly wonderful few rounds of sex, the waves crashing upon the boat the only sound that could be heard.  As quickly as she stopped, Brittany went back to drawing pictures on Santana’s back, watching the brunette visibly relax under her touch.  Brittany knew how hard it was for Santana to share feelings, particularly nice ones, and she’d learned that not bringing too much attention to these random outbursts of affection  (love? infatuation?  Brittany wasn’t sure.) made them much more frequent.

They rarely had much time to spend alone lately.  What with the Captain acting more erratic with every passing day and the storm that nearly took out their ship all together, things had been wild on the New Directions as of late.  They were lucky enough that they hard ported earlier today, and nearly every member of their crew, including the Captain, had enough cabin fever to warrant them venturing into town to shop or drink or just wander.  Brittany was thrilled.  When she and Santana were alone, it seemed as if nothing else mattered, and everything scary melted from her mind.  The brunette was like magic in that way.  She pressed a quick kiss in between Santana’s shoulder blades, unable to suppress her grin as the other girl turned to face her,

“You and you’re imagination are lucky then, I suppose” she mused, linking their fingers together.  “Because I fully intend to stay close to you as long as time will allow.”  The blonde raised her eyebrows playfully before she continued to speak.  “In fact, do you think that lock could keep out our crazy captain for good?  Perhaps we could lay her alone for the rest of forever, San.”

“Shut up.”

Brittany’s eyes widened and she stared at the strange girl in front of her, once again at a loss for words.  She watched intently as the brunette gently tended to her wound, a nasty cut on her thigh she’d gotten when she fell out of a tree she’d climbed looking for her way back to the dropship.  The deep cut had been sending sharp pains through her leg for about an hour before she let herself take a second to rest against a tree. The brunette had seemingly come out of nowhere then, scooping her up (Brittany didn’t know someone so small could posses such strength) and bringing her to this strange underground cave.The girl was a Grounder,  a person part of a group who seemed to want nothing more for she and her friends all to disappear or die or both.  And yet here she was, right in front of her and saving her ass for the second time within a few days.  It was all so confusing.

She cleared her throat awkwardly, summoning up the courage to speak again.  “You can’t just carry an unwilling stranger to your cool cave then tell them to shut up” she said, her eyebrows furrowing.  “Why are you helping me?”  she asked again, ignoring the glare she was receiving from the girl.  Whoever this was, she didn’t seem to like to talk much, but Brittany wasn’t sure how else to fill the awkward space.  “Would you at least tell me your name?  I’m Brittany.”

“How many times do I have to tell you?”

Brittany stopped talking suddenly, the silence surrounding them a stark difference from her rambling just moments before. She’d been warning the brunette about the dangers of eating too much citrus fruit just a minute before. “I forgot”, she whispered, turning from where she was facing the brunette to stare at the ceiling. 

“This no talking deal is a really hard one to keep and remember, if I’m being honest.  I think we need some amendments. How about…” she thought it over, turning back to face Santana once again.  “No talking about cat diseases or how our days were?  I just feel like we should be able to be like, cordial as roommates, right?  We’re stuck with each other,  and if I can’t talk to you, I’m gonna spend most of my time staring at your boobs or your perfect bone structure.”

“C'mon, with anyone else this would be too weird.”

Brittany stared cautiously at the brunette in front of her, her eyebrows rising in suspicion.  “You want me…to start a prison newspaper with Rachel Berry, the Prison nose queen…because doing it with anyone else would be to weird?  Are…are you implying that we share the same level of weirdness?”

The blonde looked around in shock wondering if she was being punked.  “No way.  Did you know people are just starting to not give me the evil eye when I walk by them?  I’m almost prison cool, I’m not ruining that almost reputation by drawing comics about Shue’s surprising lack of people skills.”

"I don't wanna get hurt."

“You’re gonna get hurt if you don’t start listening to my advice, Princess.” Brittany grinned down at Santana from where she was perched on a tree branch, and then quickly reached for another apple to throw down to her.  “Heads!” she called as it fell.  It was the least she could do, since the last few time she chose to give the brunette no warning at all.  It was pretty fun to watch someone who was so into their appearance all the time scurry away from falling fruit.  As she searched for more apples, she spoke.

“So from up here it looks like we’ve got at least another days walk before we reach paradise, you wanna come up here and look?”  The blonde grinned mischievously, knowing Santana would probably do nothing of the sort.  In truth, she had no freaking clue where they were going, being up in this tree didn’t help one bit.  “You know, you’re lucky you have me here, Santana”, she lied through her teeth as she strained to grab an apple just out of her reach.  “Without me, you’d be helple-”, just like that, the branch snapped and fell beneath her, and Brittany fell right along with it,  She landed on her ankle just as it twisted sideways.  “…Shit.”

Brittany laughed and nodded, squeezing Santana’s shoulders (mostly to resist the urge to hug her tight for like, the 6th time.) “Totally tried to block that out, not gonna lie.  Professor Snape said I’m the only one who’d be able to create a fire protection potion that causes a fire.” She grinned proudly, raising her eyebrows.  “Are you proud?”

They’d been at this for a while now, reminiscing about years prior and laughing about funny memories.  It was common for them on their first day back to school, and their 5th year wasn’t any different.  She wanted to say ‘I missed you so much’ and ‘No one can make me laugh like you can back home’ but she was worried saying things like that too much would sound creepy.  She couldn’t seem to get the brunette out of her head lately,  and like, not in a normal best friend way, either. Like the way she always smells nice and how her eyes twinkle when she smiles.  Brittany was almost positive what it meant and almost more positive that it would be a disaster if Santana found out.  Happy memories were way easier to deal with right now.“Do you remember when we convinced Rachel that muggles don’t wear clothes in the summertime?”

“Please keep your sick away from me and get better soon. I made you soup.”

Brittany glared at Rachel (the best glare she could muster in her state, anyway), but took the soup gratefully.  The living area in their shelter had never looked worse, with tissues and blankets thrown haphazardly around the couch.  The blonde couldn’t remember the last time she’d been so sick, usually she used her best puppydog eyes to convince Med to heal her the moment she felt an illness coming on.  But now, without access to Med, or even a doctor that could guarantee her identity would be kept a secret, she’d just have to suffer through whatever this godawful cold was.

“Thanks”, she mumbled miserably, sniffling and taking a sip of her soup.  “If my tastebuds were working right now, I’d tell you I’m really impressed with your soup cooking skills, but they’re not.  So this soup kinda just tastes like paste to me right now.” She grimaced at her words, but then raised her eyes up at Rachel sadly. “Can you sit with me and watch movies until San comes back with more tissues?  I promise I won’t sneeze on you on purpose this time.”

"You're playing with me."

Brittany let out a breath and shook her head, moving in front of Santana to try to meet her eyes, to prove how serious she was.  The brunette, though, was much more interested in the book she was reading.  “No, I’m totally serious, okay?  You should totally join our Newspaper club.”  The word club made Santana’s eyes shoot up, giving Brittany the opportunity to push her book down slightly.

“Look, we just need a few more members for Mr. Schuester to approve it, and I thought…why not Lopez?  Hear me out, okay?  You could like, totally use your violent prison fighting skills for good and write your own column and everything!  It’d be like… “Ask Santana”… and people will write in anonymously about their wimpy prison problems and you’ll teach them how to beat the shit out of whoever’s bothering them….just like you helped me!”  She stood up and backed away from Santana’s bed just slightly, pacing around their cube.  You could even write articles about sucky things in the prison like… the mold in the food or the abuse of power from the COs!”

“Plus, we need someone smart to be like, our editor in chief, and I really don’t want to give that job to Rachel.  She hated my idea that her first article should be about how to grow a mustache so much that I’m pretty sure she’d tear all my articles to shreds, anyway.

“This is love, isn’t it? When you notice someone’s absence and hate that absence more than anything? More, even, than you love their presence?”

Brittany smiled lazily and laced her fingers with Santana’s, slowly bouncing their hands up and down.  Santana’s eyes shone particularly bright in the light of the fire, and Brittany couldn’t look away. “Are you drunk…” she asked playfully, nudging her nose against the brunettes before kissing her softly, “…or did you just really really miss me?” 

The group had been separated for about half a week now.  After looters raided their shelter, Rachel and Brittany lost Quinn and Santana in the chaos, and the blonde honestly worried she might never see the girl in front of her again.  Even after three days straight of searching, all she and Rachel managed to find was a fully stoked liquor store (which, admittedly, was nearly an impossible find during an apocalypse). But then, seemingly out of nowhere, they ran into Santana and Quinn, who had somehow found the boys in their journey.  The teens had been celebrating their reunion with the vodka Brittany stashed all night.  It was loud, rambunctious, and totally awesome.  But now everyone had went to bed, and it was just them, and it was quiet and sweet and perfect.

“I missed you“ she whispered, tracing Santana’s cheek lightly with her thumb.  “I swear if we didn’t find you guys soon I was gonna use Rachel for target practice.  Did you know she practices her scales when she’s nervous?  It was unbearable.”  She laughed, scrunching up her face at the thought.

Brittany pressed her lips together, letting out a breath. “I really love you, Santana. And I’m so glad we get to continue suffering through an apocalypse together.

“When’s the last time you slept?”.

Santana sighs tiredly, rubbing her eyes. “I’m not sure,” she whispers, her head shaking as she tries to remember. Two days maybe? No, it was the day before that, because Rachel was freaking out about her stupid fish baby kicking while Santana was trying to close her eyes in the back of the truck. She thinks she definitely took a nap in between at some point though, probably. “I’m not sure” she repeats and she looks down, feeling a lump in her throat. Her muscles ache, and she knows she’s not in the best mental state to make important decisions, but with Kurt injuring his leg a few days ago and Rachel’s ongoing pregnancy most of their tasks are on her hands now. Shes been holding up fine– for the most part– except Brittany can totally see through her.

“I’ll take a nap after I’m done scavenging the neighborhood, promise” she lies, forcing a tired smile. She hopes it’s convincing enough to get Brittany off her back. She tries to disctract the blonde, taking her hand and pulling her closer. Her hands trails slowly up her arm, until fingertips are stroking the blonde’s jaw. She’s slightly hurt that Brittany is so surprised to see her so openly affectionate, but she shrugs it off, considering her real intentions aren’t exactly honest. She stands on her tiptoes, distracting her with a slow kiss, until she’s pulls away to see Brittany’s lazy smile. She thinks her job is done. She places her hand on Brittany’s chest, holding a smile for a few seconds. “Go work on the car, Britt…we really can’t afford any more days without it.”
