“Okay, so hear me out. I know it’s probably like super dorky and overly sentimental but I think like as a town we should all come together and do like a memorial… or something. For everything that’s just happened.” She gave a sad smile, tapping her pencil against her lip. “Read out old stories, have lots of nice food. Like really show we are here for each other as a town. And a proper goodbye to the people who were lost.”

“I don’t think it’s super dorky or overly sentimental or either of those things,” Jordan swiftly reassured. Sure, maybe he’s mastered having a cynic’s sense of humor, but he’s not one nor is he a straight up asshole. “That honestly sounds like a really cool thing to do,” he complimented. “If you’d like some help with getting things set up, asking around to see who would be interested, and everything else then I would be more than happy to do that.”

“Right. Venmo. I said that.” He had not said that. Hearing that Jordan would take care of the rest, Riley seemed visibly relieved as he put the wallet away again. Usually, he hated touching his bank account. It had taken too much to open it since he was… Dead. That’s why he normally paid in cash. “Well, thank you, Jordan. I can definitely do a movie mara– Wait, your movies or my movies? That could change how long the marathon lasts.”

Jordan shook his head in an affectionate manner as he quietly replied, “You totally did not.” His brightest grin appeared on his face at the general prospect of a movie marathon and it became an award winning one as he thought about revisiting a few of the movies he’d seen from Riley’s era. “Anytime. Whether it’s helping with something serious or helping you pronounce something correctly, I’ve got your back,” he started. “As for the movies, I’m thinking some of yours? Can’t go wrong with classics.”

Andie nodded, she always had time for her children and she relaxed into her seat. Trying to relax her son with her nature. “Busy i’m afraid… you know with everything going on so many people are scared. They look to the pack leader.” She half smiled. “But i care about how you are… i hope you haven’t been reading too much about all of this.”

Jordan gave her a sympathetic sort of look as he listened and nodded slightly in understanding. If he was any regular member of the pack, he knew that he’d be looking to her in that aspect. “I’m alright, thank you. Also busy and caring about how you are,” he started. He shook his head slightly before he added, “Not too much. Been too focused on school and work to properly follow everything.”

Andie couldn’t lie, the last few weeks had been difficult for the wolves. When something bad happened, suspicion could only be cast so many ways and the wolves were often targets of that. “I’m sorry, please sit down. My head as been all over the place lately. I’ve been rather busy. You look tired.”

“No worries,” Jordan reassured his mom as he took a seat next to her. “My head’s all over the place too, which probably explains the looking tired thing.” Sure, it was easy to lose himself in work and school, but the worry he’d been feeling still lingered in the back of his mind. “How’re you?” he questioned, concern evident on his face.

“That sounds really cool. You’ll have to keep working hard,” she said with a smile. “It’s good to have a goal.”

“Thanks, your goal sounds really cool too. We’ll both have to keep working hard, but it’ll be totally worth it,” Jordan responded. “And I agree. Gives you something to strive for, to look forward to.”

Once he had his wallet out, he handed over at least a hundred dollars. He had no clue how much witches charged for sun jewelry, but he wasn’t going to assume it was cheap. In fact, he was afraid he wasn’t giving Jordan enough. “If that’s not enough, just text me and I can… What’s the thing people do now? Venmoo? Is that the word?” He asked with a slightly concerned expression as he thought he was saying it wrong. “Whatever it is, I can send you cash through that.”

Jordan had to do the best he could to not laugh as he accepted the money and pocketed it with only a fond smile. “Venmo, bud. Only one ‘o’ and no mooing like a cow is required,” he gently responded, proud that only a few chuckles escaped in the process. “But I promise you that there’s no need to worry about the money at all, in any way. What else are friends for?” Jordan would be more than happy to close whatever gap came up when the price for sun jewelry was revealed. Where his family and friends were concerned, he was always happy to pitch in. “The only thing that I will ask for is the movie marathon?”

“No, it’s the best way to be. At least to me, anyway,” she laughed a little. “Oh yeah? Crime solver?”

"Exactly,” Jordan agreed and gave a slight nod of confirmation. “That’s the hope. Detective, private investigator, whichever opportunity pops up first.”

Ava snuffled and shrugged her shoulders. She was far from being all right, but she had never truly spoken to this man before, it felt weird to spill her secrets now. Especially given the circumstances and what her trustfull nature had brought her so far. “I have been better”, she admitted vaguely, “But I have been worse. Yesterday for example” She turned to look at him, a sad smile playing over her features. “But don’t worry, I just need a moment to breath before I get home” Everyone kept telling her that it was over now, that she was safe again. But to her it felt as if it had only just begun. The life without her sister. The life after the tragedy. “Thank you for asking though… Jordan, right? You are one of Mrs Porter’s kids aren’t you?” The young witch had spent the last ten years of her life in this city, she knew almost everyone from sight or talk. And she was glad to have a local approaching her instead of another stranger, another hunter.

Jordan hummed gently as he listened to Ava then nodded as part of his response to her question. “Anytime, let me know if there’s anything that I can do or anything I can bug someone inside the station to do.” He was always more than happy to offer helping hands and do everything in his power to hopefully make rough times easier for someone to handle. “And yeah, I’m Jordan Porter,” he confirmed with an easygoing smile. One of many topics that he could easily go on about for hours was his family, although his dad’s death still felt like a seriously sore subject even after a few years. Nonetheless, he loved them and would have absolutely no issue talking someone’s ears off about them if he felt the situation called for it. “Please correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re Ava, right?”

“Oh, interesting, you sound like a busy guy,” she replied with a smile. “So what is your plan after college?”

Jordan chuckled, “I am, but I also wouldn’t have it any other way.” It took everything in his power to not have a major nerdy moment and wind up going on a tangent about his chosen career. “I’m planning on becoming a detective.”

“Anytime and I’m a student, double majoring in criminal justice and forensic science. Also a barista at Crescent and Moon Coffee,” Jordan answered.

“I have to keep living my life,” she nodded, giving him a sad smile. “Thanks, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while.”

“Exactly and you’re welcome,” he replied in a tone equally as warm as his smile. “If it helps, I bet that you’re going to be an awesome nurse. You seem really sweet.”

“Bet you can’t even guess what I had for lunch then,” he commented before realizing who he was talking to and holding up a finger, “But don’t smell my breath please. It was one of those fake blood packs.” The usual lunch for him now. When Jordan offered to send a message through social media, Riley raised a brow and looked over to him. That could work. But, no, that might lead to an angry witch. Suddenly, an idea hit him and he pulled out his wallet. “Or, you could come tomorrow before my daytime shift and buy one for me? I’ll even give you some extra cash for the trouble.”

“Good thing you stopped me or else I would have taken you up on that,” Jordan chuckled before he listened to Riley’s idea and nodded in agreement. That sounded like the best course of action since it hopefully wouldn’t include the risk of an angry witch, something he very much wanted to avoid encountering for as long as possible. “Yeah, I can do that. You also don’t have to worry about paying me because it’s no trouble at all.” He was always happy to pitch in and lend a hand whenever an opportunity came up. “I wouldn’t say no to a movie night though. Hanging out with one of my best friends, being able to eat my weight in popcorn and candy? What could be better than that?”

Giving Jordan one more look, Riley knocked three times on the door and waited. “Come on, Samara’s Fortune… Come one…” Yet, after a solid two minutes passed, nobody came. Riley groaned and rest his head against the door. “Problem is that I’d have to tell those other witches what I am. I don’t exactly want it public knowledge and you only know because of that wolf nose.”

A sympathetic grimace appeared on Jordan’s face first which was swiftly replaced with a small chuckle. He fired back, “The wolf nose is a very powerful thing and you wouldn’t believe the things I know thanks to it.” Of course, even the class clown was capable of being serious and he was already trying to drum up potential solutions. “I’ve never been above a little bit of classic bribery. Especially if it’s all about helping a friend keep a secret,” he offered. “I could also try to look for her on social media? Send a message and see what happens from there?”

Ava sat outside of Crescent Hill’s police station, her arms wrapped around her knees, chin resting on top. She had just finished giving her report - well, explaining over and over that she could not remember. She could not remember who kidnapped her, she could not remember where she had been before Gabe found her in the woods yesterday. She did not know who murdered her sister… The last part still felt unreal, untrue. Her sister was gone. Mimi was lost to her forever. Tears welled up in the young witch’s eyes and she sniffed. All this was terrible, it felt like a mistake to her. It felt as if any moment someone would come up and say Hey, Ava. Forget it, it was all just a mix up. But she knew such a thing were never to happen. For everything she had told the police was nothing but lies. She had seen his face, she remembered his energy… Her phone rang in the pocket of her jeans and Ava startled. She took a deep breath, ignoring the beep beep. She already knew it was her mom, checking up on her. But she could not go home, she could not be in a house that reminded her so much of her sister. “I should have saved her”, she mumbled, more to herself than to anyone else. “I should have killed him”

In a small town, word had a funny way of traveling fast. Jordan had heard - and worried - about the recent goings on. But he’d done the best he could to keep going about his daily routine, something that involved occasionally stopping by the police station to make meal runs. After all, a random act of kindness never hurt. In fact, he was about to head in when he noticed someone sitting outside and almost immediately, concern was written all over his face. Even more so when he picked up a bit of what she said. Shoutout to werewolf hearing. He carefully took a seat just a small bit away from her as he quietly greeted, “Hey, you alright?” It was probably a stupid question given the current location, but it never hurt to ask and show that he cared.

“Is that a quote or something? Trials and tribulations?” He asked Jordan with a completely puzzled look on his face. Holding up a closed fist to the door then, he shrugged and looked over, “It couldn’t hurt to knock then. Maybe she’ll hear us out here and come help. Or, she’ll place a curse. No telling what will happen until we do this.”

“It’s a phrase. Now when people started using it in everyday conversation, I couldn’t tell you,” Jordan answered. He gave a slight shrug of his own when he noticed Riley’s hesitation before he donned an encouraging smile. “Think the worst she could do is a curse. It’s worth a try at least and if needed, there might be other witches who know how to do the sun protection thing,” he continued.

“It’s not moving on, it’s… living my life. I’m always going to miss the people who are gone, it just gets easier,” she said, sniffling slightly and pulling herself together. “I’m training to be a nurse.”

In hindsight, moving on had a certain connotation to it and Jordan offered up an apologetic look. “Exactly. As time goes on, it’ll get easier.” When he heard that she was training to be a nurse, a warmer smile appeared on his face. “That sounds really cool.”

“Boston? That’s new,” Riley joked before reaching for his phone. He rolled his eyes as the wolf mentioned his handsome face. Thankfully, without blood flow, blushing was impossible. Instead, he could play coy. “I was actually coming here because one of my friends got a necklace from her. Some sort of sun protection gemstone thing. Too bad it’s a Tuesday, right? Is it a Tuesday?” His days got confused a lot after years of repeating twenty. 

Jordan chuckled before he nodded slowly in understanding, followed by a slightly faster one in confirmation that it was indeed a Tuesday. “The classic trials and tribulations of vampire life,” he proclaimed in his most dramatic tone of voice. With the joke out of the way, Jordan carefully moved closer to see if he could hear any signs of people being inside despite the closed sign. “If I’m not remembering my random fun facts incorrectly, some businesses say they’re closed even when the owner is inside. Probably to catch up on paperwork without being disturbed or something like that.”
