[clan jorgal, being a bouncer--you're choice :D]
((I liked Branka’s elcor outline so I’m going to partially steal the format, haha >:D))
Not Just Dumb Muscle - by Jorgal Krax
Thesis: Everyone thinks krogan are hired as bouncers because it’s easy work and they’re big and scary. But being a good bouncer takes more than being physically intimidating, or brute strength.
I. Public Perception of Krogan
The “Krogan Rebellions” and how history is written by the victors
Krogan are usually assumed to be mercenaries or pirates, thanks to this historical narrative.
Krogan are indeed employed often in Citadel space as bouncers.
Bouncers are often seen as thugs, which fits easily into this narrative also.
Conclusion: The bouncer profession is a neat intersection of stereotypes, perpetuated by demand from nightclubs for krogan hires.
II. Just Punching Stuff is Actually Really Bad
Patrons will leave and the club will suffer from bad word of mouth
C-Sec will probably fine the club for creating an unsafe environment.
You’ll get fired. Or arrested. Probably both.
Conclusion: Krogan who stay employed aren’t just applying brute force. Ones who do will be tossed out and probably blackballed from the profession.
III. How Bouncing Actually Works
Most of the time you just talk with a troublemaker, to tell him he’s crossed the line.
The best bouncers are the kind who can talk that person down or get him to leave on his own.
The bouncer’s size only serves as unspoken authority. Everyone except the most belligerent of drunks realizes that a krogan can drag you outside if he wants to.
Conclusion: Krogan with people skills, who knew!
Acknowledgment of opposing viewpoint: Krogan don’t always need the people skills because he can quietly drag offenders outside if the warning doesn’t work. But the fact remains that he must keep his cool to keep his job.
Concluding statement: The accepted version of galactic history has painted krogan as dumb thugs, suited only for illegal or menial work. Bouncing is also mischaracterized as a big brute tossing troublemakers out of bars. But effective bouncers do not (and in fact cannot) rely on physical force, and krogan who can’t control themselves will not stay employed. So it isn’t an easy or automatic task, even for a krogan.
Send ♟ and a topic or subject for the title of an essay my character would write on it.

✕ - How do they handle rejection?
On the surface, pretty well. The concept of not being able to have something he wants has been a part of Krax's life since he was small. But in cases where it's personal, such as having people reject your company or a breeding partner reject your affection, it can still hurt. He maintains his expected krogan stoicism as much as he can and tries to let as much of it slide off his back as possible, but he isn't impervious. Fortunately his standard outlets for his krogan energy/aggression (hitting the gym, any fighting or fighting-related activity) also work pretty well on getting himself through Feelings he doesn't like.
Krax actually fell pretty hard for the young female who accepted his first breeding request, but she quickly grew weary of him and finally ended the relationship.
Krax was gutted, but pretended not to be. He kept to casual flings from then on, not daring to expect too much. But he still hopes that someday he'll fall for another female who actually wants to have him around. He'll just be a lot slower to confess it.
☠ - ✖ - ☮ - ♫
☠ - How do they react to death?
Death is a big part of life on Tuchanka. Random deaths of people you don't know is something Krax is kinda used to. During the current war, in fact, it bemuses him a little how upset members of the other races seem to get about the deaths of colonies full of people they have never met. He chalks it up to fear of being next.
When it's the death of a friend or even someone Krax has come to respect, he reacts a bit more obviously. He understands the void left in the world and can be angry or sad about it. But he tries to stay stoic while around other people, preferring to work through his emotions on his own.
✖ - Who is someone they just cannot stand?
There's a particular turian pundit on the Citadel News Network that has consistently defended the use of the genophage, usually when news reports about the Blood Pack or some notable bombing on Tuchanka make galactic news. Krax doesn't even really remember the guy's name, but he mentally refers to him as a phrase in the Jorgal dialect that translates roughly to "Wrinkly-Varren-Nethers-For-A-Face."
With some satisfaction, Krax has noticed the turian's marked absence from the broadcast since the krogan-turian alliance was finalized.
☮ - Do they have an idol or someone they look up to?
To soften it to something not nearly as extreme as hero-worship, Krax actually admires Zed quite a bit for how little he knows him. Mainly, he's impressed that the mechanic has managed to maintain a solid little business on the Citadel, even with C-Sec doing some predictable lurking. It made Krax realize that even he tended to think of his own people in terms of employees and not possible business-owners (outside of the illegal stuff, at least).
Almost makes Krax want to start something of his own... if he had any marketable trade skills. Oh well.
♫ - What kind of music do they enjoy?
Krax doesn't discriminate a whole lot between styles. He likes music in general. But usually he prefers it to be energetic and fun, with interesting chord progressions. A slow, sweet song here and there can be appreciated, but not too much at once or it just puts him to sleep. Unless that was what he was going for in the first place.
♦, ✖, ♔
♦ - What is one thing about them that they are most proud of?
In an uneasy sort of way, Krax is proud of the fact that he has a decent public face. He can joke around with customers and enjoys surprising them with his playful behavior. It goes against almost everything he learned on Tuchanka about socializing with strangers, and he feels really self-conscious (and consequently gets a little more terse) when krogan mercs come into the club.
So he's pleased with his ability to do it, but not entirely over feeling shame about it, I guess. :p
✖ - Who is someone they just cannot stand?
Salarian children. He hasn't seen too many on the Citadel, but nearly crushed one by accident just walking to work one "morning." They're tiny, fragile, quick, talk too fast, talk too much, have way too much energy, and their high-pitched little voices grate him in a very peculiar and special way.
Like intelligent, buzzing mawflies. They are welcome to talk to him when they learn to slow the Void down.
♔ - Do they value loyalty?
Yes, very much. On Tuchanka, where you're sometimes not even sure if you can trust your clanmates, a proven, loyal friendship is priceless. Krax is a pretty friendly guy, but out of practiced habit he remains wary of everything and everyone. If you ever put his needs before yours, it really means a lot to him.
[☮ - Do they have an idol or someone they look up to?]
"When I was a whelp, it was the Chieftain of Clan Jorgal. He was an interestin' guy now that I think about it. Lots of adult males don't want much to do with children, except to boast about how strong theirs is. But he liked to come visit the female camp, and oversee the combat trainin'. Usually interrupted to tell us stories about battles where the techniques we were talkin' about came in handy. I got the impression that the female instructors thought he wasted too much class time. I liked the stories, and they helped me realize that everything I was learnin' was useful.
"He was good, too. It took a rocket-propelled grenade from behind to put him in the dirt. Don't think I ever saw another krogan stop him face-to-face."
✕ ☼
✖ - Who is someone they just cannot stand?
Pelib Mossit, in charge of scheduling employee shifts at the Dark Star. After Krax started volunteering in the war, nabbing shifts while he was offduty was like pulling teeth. The salarian was clearly unimpressed with the frequency of his periods of nonwork and sought to run Krax off the job by starving him of opportunities to pick up shifts. Krax brought the matter to the manager, who said he would look into it. Pelib disappeared not too long after that.
Krax actually saw Pelib just before his last mission, working a snack kiosk. It took most of his willpower not to stop and gloat.
☼ - Something that/Someone who makes them happy.
Sometimes, it’s the little things. Like when you go to your favorite steakhouse and the turian waitress who always brings you extra rolls gets assigned to your table.
♠
♠ - What are they afraid of?
((Let’s see if I can dig something else out for this one >:D))
Krax is the kind of guy that lives in the moment when in battles. It’s part of how he was trained to fight as a child, and it keeps him calm and focused on the battlefield. Something that they never talked about, though, is what you do when the realization hits you at two in the morning of all the ways you came within inches of death that day.
He hates this delayed fear. It’s useless, the events it deals with are over and set in stone. Most fights only have a couple “coulda shoulda” moments, but after particularly narrow escapes he may have trouble sleeping without a good stiff drink or seven.
♠ ♦ ★☼
♠ - What are they afraid of?
"Afraid?" Krax snorts. "Bet you thought I was gonna say ‘nothin’,’ eh? Krogan won’t admit to respectin’ somethin’ bigger than them, will they? But I do. Stuff like Reapers, thresher maws, even some other krogan. A fearless krogan is a stupid one. What matters is that you’re willin’ to fight anyway."
((And yet he doesn’t mention his phobias, including deep water and getting stuck in small spaces. Phobias are more shameful to a krogan because they are irrational, thus you will be seen by others as being afraid of something that is harmless. Not the sort of thing you want to let slip on Tuchanka, if you can help it.))
♦ - What is one thing about them that they are most proud of?
Krax contemplates this for a few moments. “I’m not really a standout at a lot of things. Plenty of bigger, stronger krogan out there. But… I guess I’m proud to be part of the fight against the Reapers. Far as we know, nobody’s ever beat them. But I joined the warriors that are giving it a shot anyway. I’m not the highest scorer in Armax, but I’ve lost count of how many stolen bodies I’ve taken away from the Reapers. And I’m proud to keep doin’ it until they or I are dead.”
★ - Do they prefer daytime or nighttime and why?
"Day ‘n’ night don’t really exist on the Citadel. But wakin’ up is my favorite time of the day, and it was on Tuchanka, too. Air’s still cool from the night, and you’ve just got energy to do whatever’s gotta be done. Great time for a good battle or somethin’.”
☼ - Something that/Someone who makes them happy.
"Anytime I see someone write a solid krogan character into a vid or a game. We’re an easy fallback for villain material, or were for a long time anyway. I’ve been seein’ a lot of new stuff with krogan who actually act like people in ‘em. I wonder if because we’re workin’ with the turians, the public is ready to see more krogan hero stories. I certainly can’t complain."
♥ - What does ‘love’ mean to them? ♠ - What are they afraid of? ♦ - What is one thing about them that they are most proud of? ♣ - What is one thing that they find embarrassing? (About them, others, things in general) ★ - Do they prefer daytime or nighttime and why? ☾- Are they prone to nightmares or dreamless sleep? ☼ - Something that/Someone who makes them happy. ☁ - If they’re caught out in the rain how do they react? ♪ - Are they musically inclined? ♫ - What kind of music do they enjoy? ✓ - How do they react to praise? ✕ - How do they handle rejection? ☺ - Do they prefer sour or sweet treats? ❄ - Favourite season and why? ☮ - Do they have an idol or someone they look up to? ❤ - Do they have a love interest? ✖ - Who is someone they just cannot stand? ♔ - Do they value loyalty? ♕ - Do they trust easily? ☠ - How do they react to death?
She thoroughly examines herself before doing much. Her eyes had lingered to find the krogan look over at her, admiring the polished finish it gave under the lights. A smile shows.
"No, actually. Although it does have a few new parts after too many dents." She comments, shrugging. "Mostly polished and primed. But thank you."
Krax grins. "Sorry, couldn't help but notice. You don't see as much well-polished armor around here as you did a year ago. Rough war out there. Not like I have to tell you that."
"Finally. Polished armor from head to toe. Paint retouch, changed lights. Mmm, feels nice to look more clean.”
The glossy finish of well-maintained armor catches the corner of Krax's eye. He halts midstep, then slowly recenters his feet under his body, looking the armored turian over. "Whew," he whistles. "Looks sharp. That a new set?"
urdnot-branka replied to your post:Busy night tonight. Guess the humans are...
I was wondering why humans were counting down. I thought a fight was going to break out! But…looking forward to this year now with the genophage gone. We can only hope good things are ahead.
I can drink to that. <]:}
Busy night tonight. Guess the humans are celebratin' the start of a new year back on their homeworld. They flooded Dark Star, had a countdown and everything. Been prowlin' all night lookin' for troublemakers. Probably gonna need a good workout before I go to bed, just to unwind.
Guess Tuchanka's new year is comin' up sooner than later, isn't it? ...Too bad you can't shoot off rockets on the Citadel. Might have to visit home to do that, heheh. Our people always make a party out of it somehow - drink some ryncol, blow some stuff up, have a drunken skirmish or two...

07: What is your opinion of the hanar race?
Honestly? They kinda creep me out. First of all, they float everywhere, which I guess is thanks to some sort of mass effect field generator? Maybe? Never seen one wearin’ anything visible… is it surgically embedded? Ugh.
There’s also the part where they don’t have any eyes. I’d have a hard time believin’ they were sentient at all, if I hadn’t been sassed by as many drunk hanar as I have. They’re just weird an’ floaty an’ slimy an’ weird.
14: Which species do you find most attractive?
Sexually, or aesthetically? Because if it’s the former, I’m only into other krogan. As far as what race I think is the easiest on the eyes? I obviously think my own people are great, but turians look pretty cool, too. They’ve got the plating, but thinner and spikier. Still looks dangerous, but in a more elegant way. Rumor also has it that quarians are pretty nice-lookin’ behind those visors too, though I’ve never seen one myself.
