Meeting with Marketing

Today, I met with head of marketing at SCCH Justin Rollings to discuss the potential of putting my work up in the atrium.

My work was received very positively and we had a long talk about the potential of how it could work within the space. However, when discussing pricing it soon became apparent that I would need to self fund the project.

Given my current financial situation, it would not be wise or possible to continue with this process at this current time. I will however keep this project in the pipe line, ready to use at a later stage.

Here is a mock up of a leaflet I designed to go alongside my show. The white areas will be cut out and the coloured triangles folded over the top the show the colour through the pattern. 

The triangular shapes mimic the stencils in which the work was made in order to keep a continuous style throughout.

From looking into designing posters, an obvious thing that came out of researching was the need to have exhibition leaflets.

Obviously, my solo exhibition will be on a much smaller scale if it ever where to get the go ahead but it is still something that I should consider and potentially look into creating, even if they are rough mock ups.

I would want them to be creative and interesting in the way their layout and design, potentially including laser cut areas to mimic the stencils used in my work. I want to leaflet to relate as much as possible to the actual work that is on display, as well as communicate key information to those who are viewing it.

Here are a few examples from well know galleries such as the Tate and the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) as well as a local gallery ‘The De La Warr’ in Bexhill, East Sussex. The triangular leaflet caught my eye because of its shapes and creative use of angles; something I find very intriguing in terms of possibilities for my own work.

With this new research, I now want to create my own leaflet mock up in order to see the potential.

This is just a really quick mock up of how my work could look if I were to place them onto light boxes in order to display them. The intense light behind these images are really important as they mimic the sun shining through the glass roof of the atrium, which is the building this project is based on.

Compositionally, I would like to have them in a row in a succession of colour and shapes. I think they could work beautifully and would look stunning in the evenings. 

I am going to look into costings of custom and DIY made boxes and see if it is possible to make something to a high standard for as little money as possible. I am only having a meeting with a member of the marketing team so I will have an idea of where what and how I can exhibit my work.

Recently, I have been attempting to make my own work into an exhibition to share with others. 

I am not a fan of conventional wall hanging and like to put a but more effort into the construction of my work, from its initial photographic begins right until it is hung.

I have been playing around with the idea of using light boxes as I love the intensity of the light behind the image. I feel they would work well with my cut stencils and vivid colours to really make them pop.

Here a few examples of exhibitions that I have found online that show how light boxes can be used to take your work to a whole other level.

These 2 ‘teaser’ poster are snippets of an upcoming series titled ‘Relapse’.

This series image will eventually be submitted into the annual Association Of Photography: Student Awards 2016 under the sub category of ‘People’. 

This series revolves around my long-term partner and his struggle with Ulcerative Colitis; the physical and the mental turmoil. It is a deep and personal project that I am using as a coping mechanism in order to aid my partner and myself in his recovery. 

These posters have been inspired by my ‘Atrium’ series in terms of conveying a message to the public in this format. Currently, I am still in the process of creating work for this series and so these images are meant to entice and peak the interests of those who view them.

I have used a simple, clean text to given a ‘clinical’ feel to reflect the medical aspect of the project. The ghosting is reminiscent of the side affects felt by the medication; not feeling here nor there. 

I am hopeful that this project will be rewarding, not necessarily in the award context, but in gain a greater understanding of what my partner is going through and potentially to raise awareness of the disease.

Poster 4: 

This poster was simply a redo of my second poster in an attempt to make better use of the space and imagery.

I feel it works much better than my second poster. Whilst it is quite busy, I feel that the image and text placement works successfully in this layout.

Again, I have kept the font the same and played around with text ghosting to give it more depth. The imagery is the most important aspect for me as the work is bright and conceptual, a theme I want to convey to my viewers.

It is much more punchy and generally more visually stimulating. I still feel that my first poster is the most successful in terms of its purpose, but feel that this is a good example of experimentation and perseverance.

Poster 3: 

I feel that this is a good mix of elements from the previous 2 posters put together to compliment each other. 

I do feel that it doesn’t have as much impact as my first poster, but I like the minimalist spin on abstraction her. It is clean, simple and functional but perhaps isn’t as impactful. 

It is a decent attempt but not one that works as well as it could.

I think that my original idea was the best use of space, tools, design, text and imagery and conveys the correct message.

Poster 2:

This poster is much more experimental. I have played around with empty space, angles and text ghosting in order to give it a more abstract feel to fit the genre of my work. 

I do not feel that it is as successful on a practical level and is possibly a little clumsy. I feel as tho it could certainly be improved but I’m not sure if I can get all of these individual elements to work together as a whole. 

I like certain aspects but I feel that they aren’t working together. 

Time for a re-think.

Poster Design 1:

In order to progress my work in a way that is interpreted outside of uni, I have decided to revisit my poster designs with my most recently developed work. If I were to actually create an exhibition about this series of work, I would certainly need to advertise it to the public. Poster designs are a perfect way to visually communicate my work to others and showcase my skills, as well as use it on social media platforms in order to get more interest from a wider audience.

This design is much more impactful with the addition of colour and small segments that have been used to entice the viewer. I have kept the exhibition information on the small side in order for the title and imagery to take centre stage.

I believe that the public can make a decision about an event within seconds of seeing a poster. I want to grab their attention straight away and lead them into the additional information. Considering I am still and InDesign novice, I feel that it has work quite well and is certainly more appealing than my previous attempts.

In terms of developing this project, I wanted to revisit the poster aspect of my reflective practice unit with the newest work I have create.

If I were to continue this project into a larger scale, I would love to put on a full exhibition. However, with the current lack of funding available to me, I decided to look into re-inventing my poster designs.

These are a few examples of numerous exhibition posters from a variety of galleries that I have fund interesting in some way:

National Portrait Gallery:

This images is a great use of space and layout which compliments the photo to the text. The graphics have a busy yet minimal style and have a contemporary feel. The ranging of text size, colour and text position all work harmoniously together.

I like the professional use of clean and crisp layouts and colours in order to give a sophisticated feel to the poster. It may not be the most punchy but I feel that it appeals to its target audience well.

Wolfgang Tillmans:

Tillmans is my current focus for me dissertation, so it seemed only right to include a poster of one of his exhibition. The image used  as the base of this poster is the first piece of work I saw or his which first peaked interested my interest in his work.

I love how they have let the image take centre focus and let the other information become initially insignificant. The clean typography is a stylish juxtaposition next the the warm hue of the image and work well as a whole.

Jogjaforce:

Although it is not photographic, I still wanted to include this.I love the way this typographical poster has been put together. It is an ingenious way of filling the space with relevant information and yet still being able to make the poster aesthetically pleasing.

Bauhaus:

I have been looking at Bauhaus for my dissertation and wanted to include something that has inspired my previously. The use of iconic shapes, patterns and signs  has been influential within design and has been used well. The use of angles and block colours is so iconic of this time and combines typography to create an image in itself.

It is a creative use of design and type that creates a harmonious outcome.

The Tate Gallery;

Minimalist creativity. I love how simple this idea is and how effectively it works as a poster design. The layout is clean and crisp and is a great example of how minimalist ideas work well with a creative design. I love the use of colour, materials and its context in modern society.
