Copyright is a legal right that entitles the creator or creators of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution. Once you create an original work you automatically own the copyright for the work. This gives you the right to make copies of your work, distribute copies of your work, perform your work publically e.g. plays, musical concerts etc, display your work publically and also make changes to your work.
Copyright protection protects original works from being copied or used without permission. Their have been many famous cases of original works being used without permission over the years, even very recently where the song “Blurred lines” by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams, was the song contained very similar beats to the song “ got to give it up” by Marvin Gaye. The song was not credited to Marvin Gaye and had not been granted permission to use the song resulting in the right holders of Marvin Gayes copyright sueing Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke. At a court hearing the two were found liable to copyright infringement and awarded Gaye’s family $7.3 million in damages that were two be paid by Robin and Pharrell with Gaye’s name also being added to the writers credits. This proves just how important copyright is to provent others using your work without acknowledging your work and also to give you financial bonuses everytime your work is used.

Working in Creative Industries
For me as a Songwriter It is extremely important to have a positive attitude towards general health and safety, If you do not ensure you practice good health and safety you are endangering yourself and others and may cause serious harm resulting in you being sued. As I am looking to becoming a performing musician it is very important I ensure I have good personal health and safety making sure all my equipment is not hazardous. For example not leaving guitar cables lying around as they will be a tripping hazard and also making sure my electrical equipment is working properly and will not cause electric shocks and keeping amps pushed to the side so they are not a hazard. Noise at work is a big issue performing musicians should take into account as they are regularly around loud noise at gigs and rehearsals and even in studios where they are continually listening through headphones. If precautions aren’t taken to address this issue the person involved could develop tinnitus which seriously affects their hearing and could even end their career. To stop this the performer should ensure they use ear plugs to dampen the noise.

Creativity
Creativity is the pursuit of inspiration, the art of creating something from nothing, or adapting something into something else to create something. Creativity could be a sudden outburst of inspiration, or could force you to slave over a piece for days, months, years and beyond, striving to achieve a masterpiece. Creativity has no rules or methods, it is entirely personal, can become anything and everything. Creativity may also come from other artists where the person involved may borrow an idea or even an entire piece and but their own unique spin on it too create something entirely new.

For a working musician trade events can be a great platform for meeting new people and promoting yourself. These are some examples of various trade events.
Popkomm
Popkomm is an annual music industry trade show and festival held each year in Berlin. As this event is held in Europe it is a good opportunity to make contacts within European countries. Popkomm also puts on a showcase of bands that the staff their enjoy not just big names, this is a brilliant opportunity for my band as it gives a platform to play in front of industry personal form a different region to our usual region, if we manage to get interest from these industry workers it opens up doors for us and gives us great opportunities in this area. Regardless of how much of a following we are creating in Scotland and the rest of the UK, Popkomm is a brilliant opportunity for us to create a buzz throughout Europe. Popkomm is also in comparison to other trade events such as MIDEM cheap to attend so could be very worthwhile going to attract the attention and interest of some major music industry people opening up opportunities in Europe.
MIDEM
MIDEM Is a much bigger trade event than Popkomm with 6,150 participants and 1,236 exhibiting companies from 75 countries. Due to the vast amount of various industry workers networking can be done to help expand my bands international network and create links with other industries, improve our practices and even help my band get signed. MIDEM is a great opportunity to get my band’s music used in various ways such as use in adverts. As people from all areas of the globe attend this trade event opportunities to play gigs abroad could come from attending this event. There will also be various producers attending in which we can network with and create options for who we would like to produce our music.
GoNorth
GoNorth is a local trade event, which could be a brilliant idea to attend for my band in order to create a good relationship with local industry workers. GoNorth also put on various showcases showing the local music, this could be a great opportunity for my band to play, to create a good following in our local area and network with other local bands. There is also a radio GoNorth which would be brilliant to get played on to get our music out to even more people. There is also opportunities to play on the GoNorth stage at various local music festivals such as Belladrum which could be great for my band to gain a bigger following.
As I am a new upcoming artist it is best to build up a fan base in and around where I live and the trade event that seems to offer me the most advantages is GoNorth. This trade event could help me to expand my contacts in the local area leading to support slot chances slots on local music festivals with opportunities to get airplay on their radio station. In terms of economic growth this could help build up my profile as an artist, so when I look to trade events further afield I will be more established with more higher profile gigs played. Slots on the bill for local music festivals for my band could be a brilliant opportunity to get noticed and play gigs outside of the highlands and introduce us to other bands maybe leading to support slots or other contacts gained such as producers. In terms of educational development a local trade event is a brilliant way to see how the local scene works and also helps me to gain valuable knowledge about networking and how to build up contacts. Another advantage is that it is a UK based trade event, this is brilliant as I can learn more about the UK scene and how things work within it. This trade event is educational also as Culturally GoNorth is a brilliant place for us to start as opportunities like festival slots and showcases are a tool we can manipulate. As we are from around the surrounding area each time we play a festival or showcase we can bring along all our friends family etc. and encourage them to bring along other people they know this will hopefully have a knock on effect building our fan base so when we move onto trade events further afield we have built up a solid fan base in our local area already.
Networking is essential to help gain vital contacts and aid your development as an artist. Though networking an integral part of an artist’s development it is very important to network well, bad networking means you will not gain contacts and further your development and if you network really badly it could even damage your career. While networking it is very important to have your brand made and complete so the person you network with can see the finished project and sell you in a short amount of time whilst speaking to someone of interest so it is important to make a good impression and get over exactly who you are and what you do. If they see you haven’t put much effort into your brand or image they will be put off and not remember you. Knowing who your target audience is what genre you and who your trying to get to know before you attend these trade events results I you going their knowing what you need and who to talk to helping you focus solely and gaining exactly what you need and not squandering time with people of know use to you. Materials needed could be band logos and icons with clear band name visuals, lists of Facebook likes/twitter followers and how many people have signed up for your mailing list and any important gigs like high profile support slots or slots in festivals. If you have recorded an album or even just an E.P it could be wise to have various copies of this to hand out to people who may be interested in you. It is also very important to include clear track listing and the album artwork. Whilst networking being polite and making a god first impression is extremely important, you have to give people a reason to like you and want to get back to you on any given subject. For example if you attended a trade event to find a producer to record your album you must give them a reason to want to work with you, if you are rude or blunt they will not want to produce your music. In some cases you may play a set at a trade event, if this is the case it is very important to ensure your set is polished and smooth to give the best possible impression you can give.

Trade unions are brilliant for a self employed musician such as my self. There are a number of great trade unions that provide support on a number of issues, here are some examples.
MU: The Musicians Union helps provide a community for its members. It helps negotiate on behalf of its members with all major employers in the industry. It also helps with issues ranging from copyright protection to valuable contractual advice or from the recovery of unpaid fees to crucial work in health and safety.
MMF: The MMF is designed to help educate and inform and represent UK managers and their artists, offering a network through which managers can share experiences, opportunities and information.
BPI: The BPI is a trade association designed to create a level standard between various labels, major or independent for its members. It also sets out to promote British music and fight copyright infringement.
AIM: The Association of independent music provides financial and verbal support for its members, helping them grasp new opportunities and break into new markets. APRS: The Association of Professional Recording Services is set to provide the best possible working environment for their members and also provides the means for audio recording engineers to work together.
BACS: The voice of all composers. Represents all its members and counts the best composers. Also informs its members of the changing environment through their publications and to foster a sense of community for its members to help encourage them also.

Goods and services.
Goods in the creative industry are products sold to the public. This could come in the form of cd’s or vinyl, bands merchandise e.g. posters, T-Shirts, guitar straps etc. Services in the creative industry are anything that is not a physical good or product. For example a band playing a concert is a service, also meets and greets fall into this category. The joint effort of goods and services combine to create the needs of the person(s) involved. Both parts are integral to each other and cannot function without the other. Money can be exchanged for theses goods or services, so goods and services work together in order to make as much money as possible.

Interlectual property
Interlectual property is something you have created. This could range from inventions artistic or literal creations logos and pictures to name a few. Intellectual property is protected by law and enables the creater to earn money and be recognized for what they have created. To receive Intellectual property you must put down your idea into physical form, if the idea does not get put into physical form and that idea is then taken by another and put into physical form the intellectual rights then belong to that person.
Commercialization
Commercialization is a process in which a new product is introduced into the market, this product has been tried and tested and designed to appeal to the masses and make money.
Biography.
I still remember the first time I realized I wanted to be in a band, I was 7 years old and stuck in the back of my dad’s car driving down the boring dull M5 and arguments had broken out over trivial events. Little did I know amidst a drab ordinary drive a song about to be played on the radio would change my life forever, that song was Sing by Travis. The song is driven by a strange slightly melancholic riff which I thought was played on a guitar but turned out to be played on a Banjo. The music hit me and was the first time in my life up to that point I’d taken any interest in music what so ever, and I decided I wanted to learn the guitar and play music like that. I still breathe a sigh of relief I’d mistaken this for a guitar or now I might be plotting to take over the musical world with my trusted banjo...
Fast forward a few years and whenever I hear a song or band that I think are amazing I still get the same feeling of excitement I did all those years ago in the back of my dad’s car, although I still haven’t succeeded in my quest to take over the musical world with my music I have enrolled as a student at Alness music college where I plan to peruse my career in music. I have played in various bands, my current band The Peach Trees is the first band I’ve been in as a song writer which is the first time I’ve had the power to decide which musical direction we take. I draw heavily from my influence from Nick Cave and the bad seeds that to me are the definition of cool. They can play dark loud songs then drop down into a sad piano ballad, and then play a hypnotic ambient song, blended in with stunning instrumentals and strange lyrics that send shivers down your spine. This gives me the confidence to write whatever I want and that there are no rules you have to stick to for people too like your music.
The peach trees tend to use various effects pedals to create souring ambient soundscapes and also to build the power of the band up. We’re very fond of writing songs with strong dynamics darting from very distinct soft and loud sections, in order to draw listeners in. Lyrically we try and write about real life events that listeners can relate to. An example of this is in a song called big houses which tells the tale of a married couple who are always striving for material goods, working too hard, buying houses they can’t afford, and in the process of gaining material possessions losing any form of relationship they once had. As we are an upcoming band we are very new on the musical radar and don’t possess any major achievements we look forward to the future where we plan to record our songs and play higher profile gigs.

Week 13
Today we were told our next gig is in a few weeks time at Hootenanny’s. We have written a further four songs since our last gig so we now have options to replace the songs that didn't go down as well as overs did. As a band we know we haven’t been playing together long so we have decided to book further rehearsal time at the music shed in Inverness. The new songs we have a more challenging and ambitious then our previous songs so it is important we are tight and know the songs well to avoid any mistakes at the gig itself. Next week we are recording our song Anguish with Bee and James, so we have spend this weeks practice really perfecting our sections to the song so the recording session goes well. This will be our first song to be professionally recorded and we plan to put this song on our Facebook page and sound cloud account to promote our music. After we practice for our gig I feel we will be ready to start getting our own gigs as we now have a full band and a set list we’re proud of.

Midi composition.
Over the past few months I have learned how to use the composition program Midi. I was set a task to compose four short songs in different styles. One was a ballad, another was a rock song, one was a reggae song and the other was a Funk song. I was also set the task of composing a song in the style of Brit pop as I had written about in my composition essay, I created a hook to the song using a trumpet sound mixed with both Guitars and Bass. The program has been invaluable to me as a song writer as one of my songs called can’t change the past has an instrumental melody, I had always wanted too experiment the melody with other instruments and midi enabled me to do this.
Here is an example of a song I composed using the program.
First study, composition essay.
A genre of music that inspires my song writing is 1990′s Brit pop. Here is an essay I wrote about the genre. How the guitars sound, the aspects of composition, and who the genre appealed to.
A genre I listen to regularly is Brit pop, which came about during the 90’s predominantly from 1993-1997. The genre consisted of bands such as Elastica, Oasis, Blur and pulp plus many others. Britpop was the sound of various British bands influences mixed together such as the Kinks, The Jam, The Clash, The Stone Roses and The Who to name just some. The first Britpop album is said to be modern life is rubbish by blur, the band had began an American tour and quickly became very homesick, as they returned home the music scene in Britain was predominantly controlled by American grunge music which had gained mass popularity since the overwhelming success of Nirvana. Feeling fed up about this the band hatched a plan to write songs that were about Britain, the culture, the sites and the traits of the people. The album was not a commercial success but it succeeded in starting a scene that was quickly gaining fans, and inspiring other Britpop bands, the genre didn’t become fully mainstream until 1994 when Oasis released their debut album which is regarded as one the best debut albums ever, and Blur released Parklife their biggest album success to that point, with bands such as pulp writing antemic songs with very British lyrics like common people and disco 2000. Although the genre broke into the mainstream it was originally indie music and social groups that associate themselves with that genre were the first people to get behind the movement. Stylistically the genre was mainly led be bands, so consisted mainly of guitars, bass, drums, vocals and keyboards. Also some bands incorporated strings and brass into some songs, for example blurs the universal and Oasis’s Wonderwall. Guitars were one of the main instruments in Britpop bands, often the guitarists wrote pop guitar riffs that were memorable and melodic such as the song Parklife and cigarettes and alcohol. Most guitarists opted for distorted guitars that gave them more power and helped make the songs more anthemic. Pedals were used widely throughout the genre such as delay pedals which guitarists often self osculated to create a psychedelic wall of sound. For more British sounds the guitarists cleverly mixed flange and vibrato to create a wobbly more jolly, melancholic sound that seemed to give off a very British sentiment. A good example of this is in the song chemical world which was a memorable melodic riff and uses vibrato and flange pedals expertly. Many Britpop songs had a very anthemic major key feel, but also contained some more melancholic minor key songs. Structurally the songs were made of very melodic catchy choruses predominantly in a four four time signature, with quite standard structures such as verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus outro. Some Britpop songs gained intensity towards the end of the song gaining power to a massive climax, an example of this is live forever by Oasis. Harmonies were mainly incorporated into the songs in the chorus to further lift them. As the movement was influenced by punk the songs were often fast and had a strong energy to them.
First study Guitar essay.
We were assigned a test to write a 1500 word essay on the guitar from the 1950′s to the present day. Before I began the essay my knowledge was mainly of the 1990′s with my knowledge of the other decades being less knowledgeable. I leaned about dates of various iconic guitar releases and also how amps and effects have evolved over the years. My guitar playing and songwriting incorporates a lot of effects pedals and different amp sounds and guitar pickup positions, It was interesting to discover how the guitar has changed and gotten to sound I can now produce.
Here is a snippet of my guitar essay.
1950’s During the 1950’s the guitar had sparked a musical revolution with artists such as Johnny cash and Elvis capturing the youth of the time and elevating the guitar into legendary status. Guitar companies during the 1950s were producing guitars that go down in history and still be produced to this day. In 1950 a company called Fender released the first ever solid body, single-cutaway electric guitar called The Broadcaster, but would later be changed to its more famous name that is the Telecaster. It’s praised for its simplistic design and its unique sound was extremely influential. In 1954 Fender released one of the most iconic electric guitars ever made, The Stratocaster, which is known for its incredible versatility and has been used by countless guitarists in various genres. A famous Stratocaster player from the 1950s is Hank Marvin, who created catchy instantly recognisable riffs and melodies on his Stratocaster that would go on to inspire many future artists such as Brian May and George Harrison. 1960s The 1950s sparked a revolution into the youth and countless youths were inspired to make music and start bands with the guitar being front and centre. There is an almost endless list of bands that came out during the 1960s, probably most notably The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. A very famous electric guitar released during the 1960s A G6122-1962 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman model which George Harrison played throughout his time in The Beatles. The guitar has the ability to be played as a rhythm instrument or be used to play souring lead parts. The guitar helped shape The Beatles sound with George playing his intricate guitar parts and full rhythm sections on it.
In 1960 Gibson released an Acoustic Guitar called The Hummingbird which was Gibson’s first was Gibson's first square-shoulder dreadnaught guitar. It has been praised by many guitarists for being gutsy and loud but also sweet and soft and being brilliant for all styles of playing. In 1968 Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones used the guitar to compose the melody for the song street fighting man. During the 1960s guitarists were finding more and more ways to push the guitar to the next level, improving amps and introducing effects. Distortion was a massive step in the next direction and pre 60s guitarists had been experimenting, pushing the volumes off their amps to create the effect some even damaging their amps to achieve the effect. In the 1960s Dave Davis slashed a speaker cone in his amp with a razor blade and used the sound to record the iconic song you really got me. This was a milestone in guitar technology and sparked Jim Marshall to began modifying the electronic circuitry of his amplifiers to achieve a clearer more louder sound with improved distortion capabilities. As the decade went on Guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix would use effects like wah wah pedals and fuzz pedals, which helped push the guitar into its next phase of a more rocky heavier approach.
