Joshua Bennet is a descendant from a long line of Jewish Poles. His grandfather moved to America when he was a child, the last name ‘Benat’ was changed to ‘Bennet’ thanks to miscommunication with spelling, and his family have been the ‘Bennet’s in Devinstone ever since. Josh has vague memories of his mother, a woman who didn’t care to know her son and left in the middle of the night when he was just four years old. Growing up with just his dad was perfectly fine for Josh, though, and he knew no different. Often, he would ask why he didn’t have a mom, where she was and why other kids got one and he didn’t. When he was 10, a woman was introduced to his life that changed everything. Suddenly, he had a mom and she was wonderful. She treated him like he was her own and soon, after she married his dad, they had a daughter of their own.
Joshua doted on his little sister, Rose, and that continued throughout her life. He was 12 years older than her, protective of her every move. He wanted to do everything for her, running to her every beck and call. Josh’s life was picture perfect, something that you saw on an advertisement. Both Bennet children were encouraged to be who they were, so when he came out as bisexual, it wasn’t a huge deal for anyone; it didn’t stop Josh from being Josh.
When Rose brought her first, serious boyfriend to meet the family at 17 years old, Josh was apprehensive. Just like their parents. As accepting as they were, they were traditional people and wanted the best for their only daughter, not letting them live together until they were married. Josh was more accepting, and he enjoyed being around Declan. It was like having a brother. Mostly, though, he just loved seeing his little sister happy. Until the worst thing happened. Josh’s world fell apart when Rose was killed in a car accident, and finding out that she had been pregnant made everything just that worse.
He became a little withdrawn after Rose died, especially because Declan moved away too. Not only had he lost his sister, but he’d lost his brother too. Josh hasn’t settled down, claiming he hasn’t found the ‘right One’ yet, and without the encouraging words of his younger sister he isn’t sure he’ll ever get the courage to ask anyone out on a date. All in all, Josh is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who tries to be as fun as he can. It helps to distract from the loss of the most important person to him.
