Lorraine Loots and her tiny paintings…
Are in the second phase of her project now called 365 Postcards for Ants. On January 1 2013, she began painting a small piece every day, as a way to “make a mark on each day”. It was a challenge to commit to painting one new thing for an entire year, something she was not sure she would even go through with. But the project has now evolved far beyond its beginnings, and is set to complete its second year in just a few months.
The project grew quite a bit when people interested in the paintings began reserving special dates in advanced, even suggesting specific subject matter for their personal paintings.
Now Lorraine, whose paintings have all been booked through December 2014, offers an additional 5 postcards - archival art prints - of each painting which can also be purchased or reserved.
The 2014 version of her project focuses strictly on Cape Town, South Africa, as the city was designated as the 2014 World Design Capital. At the close of the 2014 project, all 365 paintings will exhibit in Cape Town and Johannesburg before being sent to their new owners.
All photos from paintingsforants tumblr page.
Besides being a handsomely designed way to explore the “painting a day” concept which has been touched on by many other artists, Lorraine’s paintings are meticulously and beautifully made. And while all of the 2014 paintings are created specifically with Cape Town in mind, each chosen subject matter and composition is very different, and just as beautiful as the last.
