POZ Review: Arctic Monkeys - AM
by Jason Stives, edited by Erik van Rheenen
Almost a decade into their career and Arctic Monkeys are still criminally underappreciated in America. While their iconic debut and subsequent releases have always gained them critical acclaim, they have never cracked a mainstream market like they have in their native England. Despite this, the band’s fifth effort, AM, continues their trend of producing albums different from their precursor by moving further away from their indie rock roots and focusing on a more mature style in the vein of their most recent efforts. Much of AM is influenced by those two proceeding albums successfully combining heavy handed riffs and grooves with starry eyed, whimsical pop sensibilities and a hip hop edge.
This statement is made inherently clear on the haunting, longing opener “Do I Wanna Know?” where lead singer Alex Turner lustfully wants what he can’t have under the watchful eye of his trembling vocals and horror show-like guitar licks. Lines like, “Been wondering if your heart’s still open / And if so I wanna know what time it shuts” shows Turner in his prime as a lyricist offering more than just the suggestion of sexuality and desire. Much later on we get a subdued take of these feelings on the closer “I Wanna Be Yours,” where he lifts directly from the work of punk poet John Cooper Clarke. He puts intent and feel behind Clarke’s blunt words wanting to be your Ford Cortina and vacuum cleaner in the most non- cheesy and honest way.
In between these two stages of lust the album becomes it own as a mix of Sabbathy 70s rock and roll and late 90s inspired hip hop and R&B; a winning combination that I’m surprised isn’t pursued more often. “R U Mine?” has been around for 18 months now but it’s still important because it is the template that structured the work found on this record. With its rolling drums and rubber neck guitar work it’s accented as is the rest of the record by the backing vocals of “the space choir boys” the name Turner gave to the band’s rhythm section bassist Nick O’ Malley and the always reliable Matt Helders on drums.

PSA: if a fan of the band dislikes something the band did, it doesn’t make them a bad fan and it definitely doesn’t give anyone the right to be horrible to them. if they thoughtfully explain their reasons and you don’t even TRY to understand them before responding with hate… you are the problem.
don’t try to create divisions in our group by being an asshole to someone just because they’re not drinking the kool aid. blind obedience is the worst shit ever.
Very true. Well done
