7 of Wands ~ 9 of Cups

Very forceful fire energy, competitive, but tempered by that passive male water energy, the figure in the 7 of Wands side by side with that much older figure in the 9 of Cups, that much older figure who to me is looking on with approval, so something going on here to do with child, parent. The man acting in a way that's connected to wanting or getting the approval of that father figure, or boss, so the figure in the 7 of Wands might be working for the individual in the 9 of Cups, and something going on to do with setting boundaries for the pair of them.

7 and 9 reduce down to 8 which is change. Easy then to associate the possibility of change and certainly movement with this pair, if for no other reason fire heats water gets water moving. There is something going on here which will lead to something, something is coming to a head and a new stage will be reached soon.

Ace of Wands ~ 4 of Cups.

  There is an instant and recognisable tension here between the fire and the water to me, further to that the sulking figure in the card is being offered an opportunity to do with feeling, in the form of that small handheld cup emerging from the cloud, and so very close to his face, which he doesn't appear to have noticed, so caught up in his resentment to see, and he also appears to be ignoring the 3 cups in front of him, the card of celebration and dance, the enjoyment of dance if you will; but the Ace of wands is pointing away from him, so although an opportunity is being presented to the figure to do with insight, is not that accessible, certainly not as accessible as the feeling opportunity, that he may have to make an effort and get up off his arse and reach for it; stand up shake yourself and get moving, wake up and be alert, because something good can happen for you, but only if you reach out and go for it. 

The Ace of Wands of is pointing away from him which suggests an opportunity to engage with the world in a fiery extrovert manner, whereas the Ace of cups is within his field of vision, is actually being offered to him directly, which suggests an opportunity to do with feeling which is more personal and more introverted.

Just to confuse the issue I have always seen that figure as sulking because I associate him with someone I knew, but in fact I've just noticed the figure in the 4 of cups could well be read as being in a contemplative place, trying to choose between a past of pleasure and fun represented by the 3 of cups in front of him, and a future of insight represented by the Ace of wands, supported by the much smaller feeling way of evaluating what goes on in life, primary insight and fire and intuition supported by feeling, which I can then relate to the Myers Briggs INFJ personality type.

Ace of Cups ~ Moon

The Dove stands out for me in the in the Ace of Cups, the dove of peace, juxtaposed against that major Arcana Moon card, so an opportunity for peace and harmony is being offered, and I am also reading the pair at the moment as day against night, and worth observing day and night do actually coexist, always being daytime somewhere and night time somewhere else. Just before I pulled the cards I was mulling over something to do with integrating different personality aspects, and integrating personality aspects leads to peace, so I feel positive about the cards, definitely has positive connotations for me.

Then we have that which is seen and that which is unseen, the Ace of Cups represents what you the querent offers to the world and the moon represents that which you hide, or is much less obvious anyway; consciousness and unconsciousness, and an opportunity to develop some understanding about unconscious feeling, semiconscious feeling.

Finally and rather obvious now, a lot of water, danger of emotional incontinence with that much water, at the other extreme from the more positive reading.

2 of Pentacles. Knight of Swords.

  The 2 of Pentacles in this instance represents a well balanced individual, a down to earth individual who is under attack from the aggressive and violent Knight of Swords, the Knight of Swords, who in this instance I am reading as perceiving anything but abject submission to him as an attack. (I associate the Knight of Swords with the Myers Briggs personality type ESTJ, which is the stereotypical working class man, who I also associate with the male biological parent and his other son, although his other son is not in fact that personality type. I also associate that personality type with an individual I am at odds with who is enraged at my refusal to submit to him, so I am reading this pair of cards as reflecting an immediate personal experience.) 

The 2 of Pentacles represents every decent human being who has ever been picked on and abused by a malodorous lout, male or female, the sort of malodorous lout who never takes responsibility for anything that goes on in their lives that doesn't suit them. You know who you are.

Lovers  7 of Swords.

The Lovers card represents relationships, co-dependent relationships of a bed sharing nature, and in this instance the angel floating overhead says something to me about healing, that good relationships are healing, which is absolutely true; but juxtaposed against the 7 of swords which I always find such an ambiguous image, as the individual in the card is either a thief, or he's a brave man playing his part in fighting against the enemy who have invaded his country.

If I was actually giving a reading for someone I would struggle to say more; and nothing comes to me apart from the notion relationships are never pure and ideal, which is arguably something everybody deals with, faces up to, or is in denial about constantly, and either ends up accepting without resentment, or seethes with resentment about forever, as an enormous part of the difficulties everybody has with relationships is expecting some idealistic romantic perfection, and then learning, or not, to take the rough with the smooth.

Finally, which I'm pretty certain I never commented on before, the character in the 7 of Swords is carrying 5 swords which quite clearly represent conflict, bullying to me, the 5 of swords; but then on the other hand he's leaving 2 swords behind, which have more peaceful connotations, so there's that ambiguity again. Conflict and peace. Conflict and stasis.

You have come to a make or break point in your relationship which can now go either way, or dont make mountains out of molehills!!

10 of Pentacles ~ Ace pentacles.

Because the Ace of Pentacles is to the right of the 10 of Pentacles, reads to me like a signpost, rather than an opportunity, is pointing in a direction away from that scene of ordinary life, pointing to someone or something that is to come, which will be an opportunity that will enrich that prosperous ordinary family life, with the young couple at the centre of the card , and the old man who is coming to the end of his life, watching them engaged in life that he once knew and where he can never go again; and I am very aware at this time of aspects of my life which are over, mostly because I no longer have energy for those aspects I'm considering, but at the same time I experience myself as having a future, a down to earth future and the Ace of pentacles says to me I might be due to meet someone, although what the relationship might be will unfold.

  Alternatively the 10 of Pentacles is setting the scene and the Ace of pentacles is being offered to someone as yet unseen, not yet met, to come and join, and enhance what the 10 of Pentacles represents, this ordinary life at best.

2 of pentacles ~ 7 of wands.

My immediate response to the 2 of Pentacles paired with the 7 of Wands is that this is indicative of balanced activity, balanced and reasonable confrontation happening; the individual in the 5 of Wands is standing up to the other 6 who we can't see, and his behaviour is just, this is a just cause, because the 2 of Pentacles is about balance, maintaining balance, and further Pentacles, which I associate with sensation, is of the body to me at a very basic level, and certainly says to me, feet on the ground, groundedness.

Definitely positive and feels applicable to an interaction I have going on with a number of individuals who are ganging up on me, and just like the visible staff wielder in the 7 of Wands I don't feel a victim, I'm behaving in a down to earth balanced feet on the ground manner and refusing to allow the antagonists I'm dealing with to have their way; and then lastly the card can easily be read as drawing lines in the sand, setting applicable boundaries, valid and reasonable boundaries, which does not go down well with those who can't set their own.

Temperance. Emperor.

Two major Arcana cards, side-by-side, and I have to say in this instance that doesn't seem particularly significant.

The Emperor represents power, a very particular kind of power, top of the pecking order power, top of a formal hierarchical situation, but tempered by that vulnerable looking angel by his side so this says something to me about power being exercised at best, to the benefit of all.

Complex industrial societies need central coordinating figures, organisations, benign organising sensible well-balanced down-to-earth organising figures and bodies, not dictators and autocrats, those who are self-serving like Boris Johnson. Those who have management skills at very best, which they use in the best interests and in the best sense to the social good as well as economic good for those who have more than they need.

Might construe the pair as ideal parents, the strong male Presents tempered by that more "feminine" presence, so there's that masculine feminine balance. The cards contains water, living plants, the sun rising and that feminine angelic figure, floating slightly above the ground, next to that rock solid male figure sitting on his solid throne upon which the carvings of 2 rams which are connected to Mars which is about war are carved. ( I'm minded of how Myers Briggs personality indicator refers to introverts as having a general and an aide, and the aide deals with the world for the general, so here temperance represents the part of the personality the introvert uses to deal with the world and the Emperor is the more fundamental part of the personality.)

8 of Wands~ 5 of Wands.

  My first response is the 8 Wands are moving towards the 5. 5 and 8 make 13, which reduces to four, and that implies for me a solidity, established and certainly positive situation, along with change and movement. Think 4 of Wands. 

Then in fact the 8 of wands is very much about movement, 8 being the number of change, and over and above that I I see the 5 of wands rather than being about competitive aggressive conflict, much closer to a balance between competitive and playful, like a football match really, with caveats.

Something very volatile and shifting is happening in a well-established situation, the situation is very lively, in fact very easy for me to relate these two cards, certainly to one aspect of my life, which has a degree of conflict going on, but there's also elements of playful about the situation which appears to very serious at times, and a long-standing ongoing established but volatile situation which certainly promotes a lot of insight.

Hanged man ~ Strength.

My immediate response to the Hanged man was the notion of "waiting", and then because the accompanying card was strength, the idea came to me the card represented fortitude, which is an aspect of Strength, is of endurance. Life can feel like being in limbo times which the Hanged man also represents to me, but we become stronger if we endure such times.

Reminds me of that year or so when the landlord took against us at Beacon Hill, set out to drive us from the flat, and I certainly felt myself to be in transit for the entire time, in limbo, not knowing if we would have to leave or when that would happen, and I was on top of that meditating, which I'm quite sure made the experience even more intense and difficult, meditating in the form of yoga, although I didn't understand yoga was a form of meditation then, and it is not difficult to connect the Hanged man to meditation, and certainly not an original notion.

6 of swords and Justice.

6 of swords and Justice.

The individuals in this card are actually moving towards, are going somewhere; and although never particularly struck me before, represent a family; and have read this card in the past being swords along with the actual image, they are going somewhere somewhere with the idea the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, however because they are moving towards the Justice card, strikes me they are as a family moving towards, a more balanced and just and democratic society if you will, whereas if I read the card as being mostly about the figure guiding the boat he's moving towards becoming more balanced more just. Eight of Cups ~ Waite Smith Tarot

Change.  Setting out. Setting out alone. Going into the wilderness. Pioneer. The psychological  equivalent  of all those unknown people exploring that unknown, to them territory in Australia in the early days.

From the perspective of all these years later, of setting out on such a journey, the analogy with pioneering in Australia after it was discovered seems even more pertinent,. Occurs to me that it wasn't always easy to understand the circumstances I was in because what was going on for me was taking place in the context of familiar territory, here in the UK.

 Because of meditation I’d started to explore the inner unknown, which I reacted to with long established judging habits, connected to Christianity, being left wing and conservative all rolled into one, fighting it out with each other, in a city that I knew well, which caused me to  behave differently to people I'd known  for years, which alienated them, and then the change in their  behaviour alienated me further, affected my behaviour and so on and so on.

I've never written this down and feel accepting of it. It's a journey. Loosening the ego attachments, and of course the early part is difficult; I was meant to do it here, which made it both harder and easier. The positive is I moved on from and transcended relationships that dragged me down, but sadly I also moved on from associations that meant more to me.

Again that's the journey. The things we need to transcend make life comfortable and difficult and to move from that which brings us down is also to leave that which fulfils. They go together. Dark and light

On the Ten of Wands, we see a bent figure trying to carry ten heavy poles. They are ranged so closely in front of him that he can't even see where he's going. Nothing exists for this man except his burdens and responsibilities. How true this is for so many today! We take on so much, trying to do all the things that need to be done. We think that if we can hang on until the weekend (or vacation, or end of the semester) then we can finally relax. The weekend comes, and the overload continues.
