Cyan should absolutely not be considered a shade of blue. I don't mean this in a "cyan should be a shade of green" way either I mean it should be a distinct color category. Orange is distinct from red and yellow. Yellow is distinct from green. There is a much bigger visual difference between pure RGB blue and pure RGB cyan to me than there is between green and yellow. There is NO reason that that shouldn't be its own color category. We just haven't decided it is yet.

i don't know enough about the science behind the visible light spectrum to back you up 100% but i can get behind this from a primary color standpoint. red, green, blue, and yellow are all seen as distinct colors, but magenta and cyan are both kind of ignored. magenta makes a little more sense to me because it has no single wavelength of light, but not cyan.... no idea if this is accurate (for all i know there is a scientific or historical explanation) but i see where you are coming from

I would like to weigh in on this as a lifelong Annoying Person.

Yes, cyan is an equally distinct color as magenta or yellow. The three of them are, in terms of how our eyes and brains receive them, simply *not* their opposite colors. Pure "yellow" is simply "not blue." Cyan is "not red," and magenta is "not green."

From a scientific standpoint the primary colors are red, green, and blue, and yellow, cyan, and magenta are the scientific secondary colors in that their existences are defined by absence and cannot be described as a shade of one of the three primary colors of light.

"There is a much bigger visual difference between pure RGB blue and pure RGB cyan to me than there is between green and yellow." is a valid opinion, but a factually untrue statement. Pure cyan is to blue as pure yellow is to green. The bias here comes from the fact that the majority of the visible light spectrum reads to humans as "green" because it is in the middle of the visible light spectrum, influencing us to have evolved eyes more capable of differentiating shades of it than red and blue.

"There is NO reason that that shouldn't be its own color category. We just haven't decided it is yet." is true. Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta all deserve to be viewed as fully distinct colors of their own categories.

I have opinions, as well, about where the lines fall for when a color stops being objectively a shade of red, blue, or green, but I won't get into them here.

My wording here isn't perfect, because this is a Tumblr post and not an actual essay on color, which I *would* love to write, if people would take the time to read it.
