Only remembering that a self in exile is still a self, as a bell unstruck for years is still a bell.
Jane Hirshfield, Sheep (via 7-weeks)
Possibly, then, writing has to do with darkness, and a desire or perhaps a compulsion to enter it, and, with luck, to illuminate it, and to bring something back out to the light.
Margaret Atwood, Negotiating with the Dead

To write poetry in America is in itself a subversive act, a refutation of, and resistance to, certain assumptions about what constitutes “the public” and its interests. Poetry protects language from serving any master. One can see better from the periphery than from the center.
Ann Lauterbach, The Night Sky: Writings on the Poetics of Experience (via litverve)

That visibility which makes us most vulnerable is that which also is the source of our greatest strength.
Audre Lorde on the Vulnerability of Visibility and Our Responsibility, to Ourselves and Others, to Break Our Silences (via enigmatic-being)
“Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.”
—Miles Davis
I am not sure that language can grow to its full potential if we choose to leave certain words unsaid. If some things are deemed too hideous to understand. If we must distance ourselves from all that does not hold sway to our own beliefs…What I have begun to think: that before the word comes the image, that before we describe, we must first be willing to look. We must stare, then verbalize, then reclaim. We learn to comprehend what is in front of us by writing, by re-creating in such a way that we urge others not to turn aside.
Maaza Mengiste (The Massachusetts Review, 2016)
You are not afraid. You are a cathedral waiting to be filled with hymns; you are an infinite playground; you are sky-bound and sprinting, so cover your heart in goose-bump armor. It will only beat stronger, beat louder.
Miles Walser, from “Perfectly Human” (via pigmenting)
Submissions are now open for our June 1st issue!
To submit, email your work to [email protected] on or before May 15th.
