A snapshot from the first @noirlashlounge managers off-site conference bringing together staff from Canada, Bellevue and Santa Monica. It was a 4 day adventure in the middle of the woods of ideas, inspiration and bonding among my teams but ultimately an eye-opener for me to see how my little idea has evolved. A personal thank you to everyone for "leaning in" and to my husband who organized every little detail (it was a crash course in the great vegan vs vegetarian debate) - I had very little to do with this to be honest in fact, much of the agenda was hidden from me!! I am so touched by everyone's motivation and humbled to hear about the impact I do make in all your lives. This isn't even a dream come true because i didn't dare to dream this 6 years ago. Six years ago I was flying by the seat of my True Religion jeans and had no clue this little "idea" would turn into what it is today. It is an honor to be able to continue to make my visions reality but I now know that I have a team with the same integrity and inspiration to achieve the same dreams.

You can't expect to be able to attend every bake sale, field trip or play date. You also can't expect to succeed in your career if you try to accomplish both simultaneously. It's simply not possible to be a full-time mom and have a full-time career. There aren't enough hours in the day. Some can call it "balance" but it's more "acceptance" and letting go of the guilt that comes with not being there when the other moms can. I don't believe that the CEO of PepsiCo or any other female CEO is a "super mom" and hate the label as it suggests we're better moms than others because we're juggling both. On the contrary I feel I am "inferior mom" because while other moms can have the time bake their kids goodies for school, I'm the mom grabbing them from some bakery instead because I just don't have the energy after a full day of work to whip up a batch. So the reality is I'm not the better mom working full-time. Nothing about what I do as a mother is "super" - in reality it's not even mediocre, it's probably sub-par. And as working mothers we can't hate ourselves for it or go crazy trying to accomplish both. Focus on what's important: family time is family time and work shouldn't get in the way of that. Let go of where shortcomings may lie - like really who cares if the other moms are spending 6 hours hand painting Frozen-themed cookies for the school fundraiser. Sleep? Elsa? Sleep? Sorry but you win, sleep! I'm not saying I've utterly given up on even trying to be the best mom there is or ever was, but I've definitely stopped hating myself for not "doing it all". Decide what's important: mommies lunch every Wednesday or weekly meeting with your boss? Attending the school play or Happy Hour with the team? Some decisions are easy to make, but not all are and there are times where you'll feel frustrated, defeated and just the world's biggest letdown because no matter what you choose something will end up being sacrificed. Launching a new team in a new territory on that project you spent the last year planning or your daughter's first solo performance? Whichever the choice, accept it, and move on from it. Enough with the loathing and self-hate. After all, we're not super mom. And I'm sure as hell not trying to be.
