REMEMBERING THE DRAGON

Today marks 53 years since Bruce Lee’s untimely passing, at the age of only 32. His spirit, philosophy, and influence remain as powerful as ever. To us, Bruce Lee isn't just a legend. He was the teacher, mentor, and friend who forever changed the life of Jerry Poteet, one of Bruce's most dedicated students. Through what Jerry taught to us, that knowledge and legacy continue to inspire martial artists across the world today.

Bruce Lee revolutionized martial arts on film with breathtaking speed, realism, and intensity. He shattered Hollywood's stereotypes, proving that an Asian leading man could command the screen with confidence, intelligence, and unmatched presence. His final completed film, "Enter the Dragon," released shortly after his passing, became a worldwide phenomenon and forever changed action cinema.

However, Bruce's greatest legacy reaches far beyond movies. His philosophy challenged us to think independently, adapt without limits, and strive for continuous self-improvement. More than five decades later, his impact can still be seen in martial arts, combat sports, filmmaking, fitness, anime, video games, and countless lives inspired by his teachings.

Today, we honor not only the man, but the timeless ideas he shared--ideas that continue to live on through those who were fortunate enough to learn from him, including Jerry Poteet, and now through every student of ours dedicated to preserving that legacy.

Some lives burn so brightly that time cannot diminish them. Bruce Lee was such a flame. Bruce's life was brief, but his legacy will endure for generations to come!

THE SECRET

When I began training Jeet Kune Do with Sifu Jerry Poteet, I was hungry for the knowledge that would magically endow me with the same mastery and almost mystical skills of Sifu. Day after day, week after week, I trained ferociously, hoping for that inevitable breakthrough. I read volumes of Eastern and Western philosophy, tried meditation and yoga, (full disclosure: I HATE going slow!). I honed my body and reflexes to near Olympic level. Still, no breakthrough. The enlightenment I sought seemed always just out of reach. I pleaded with Sifu to give me the key, the secret to unlock every door. He just shook his head and laughed, and led me to the mirror. "You are the key. The secret is you!"

Now, years later, I look forward to sharing this precious Legacy at Seminars in Iowa, and Los Angeles.

It was Jerry’s dream to have a rescue ranch for abused or abandoned animals. Although he was unable to fulfill his dream, JPJKD Instructor Alex Shore has done so in San Diego County. Alex is not only a gifted teacher and martial artist, but he is a lifelong animal lover. He left a successful career in finance to self- fund his animal sanctuary. IRON HIDDEN IN SILK

Today, we celebrate Linda Lee Cadwell, a woman who embodies the phrase, Iron Hidden In Silk. I am lucky enough to have known her for decades. We first met at a Bruce Lee event, where Jerry and I were teaching. So many years later, the guys are still talking about how beautiful she was in her stunning red dress!

Besides her obvious physical beauty, Linda’s inner strength and resilience in the face of adversity is an inspiration. Linda does not walk in anyone’s shadow. While helping preserve a legacy, she is a life force all her own.

After Jerry died suddenly, she urged me to continue teaching and to continue his martial arts and JKD legacy. I do so today with her blessing and encouragement. To the elegant, beautiful, Linda who is proof that kindness is more powerful than any punch or kick. All we can say is “Thank you, God, for her positive presence in so many lives.” Happy Birthday Linda!
