the most beautiful book spread I’ve ever seen.
Flounce (detail). Bobbins. ‘Blonde’. Spain, Barcelona area, 1830-60
Polychrome silk and gold thread 45 x 410 cm Paris, collection Mmes Carmen Martinez and Viviane Grimminger
The decoration is of cornucopiae, flowering branches of convolvulus, narcissi, roses, pansies and lupins, sprinkled with butterflies, and with a border of leaves and nuts.
The cornucopiae and ears of wheat are worked in gold thread: the ground is in black silk.
This lace belonged to the family of the sculptor Julio Gonzalez, a friend of Picasso.
Book is Lace by Anne Kraatz.
