I saw the “Fabergé and the Russian Crafts Tradition: an Empire’s Legacy” exhibit at the Walter’s Art Museum, which showcased the long history of craftsmanship in Russia. All I knew about the topic previously was that Fabergé eggs were highly sought after; I didn’t even know that they were intended to be Easter eggs, since Easter is the biggest holiday in the Russian Catholic Orthodox Church. I also learned about the close ties between Fabergé himself and the Romanovs, who I hadn’t realized were connected. There seems to have been an emphasis on miniature artworks, or artworks with extremely fine detail, as a way of proving one’s skill as an artist or craftsman. The thumbnail-sized watercolor portraits of the Romanov sisters were particularly impressive.
