For Inktober #7, Enchanted: Lady Pole and the gentleman with the thistledown hair…
I’m not late for this one! Anyway, I kept thinking about the first bit of magic that Mr Norrell did in Susanna Clarke’s book Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, I loved how the statues came to life!
The Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair... A new sketchbook, but a little too small. Hopefully the eBay one is the medium. This paper is nice for pencil.
arabella strange and emma pole somewhere in post-book
Enchanted - InkTober 7
Arabella Strange and the Gentleman.
Well, my drawing’s even worse than it used to be, and my scanner’s temporarily broken so have to take a photo and make it worse further. But it’s Inktober, right? Nobody should expect me to be reasonable.
Inktober 2019, day 7: enchanted
I’m soft for the two Johns
I read JS&MN years ago, as you can see (don’t ask me about the show because I never saw it), and while I don’t remember much of it, it’s one of those novels where isolated images and moments still stand out to me. The concept of “the color of heartache” is one of those things, so while I haven’t retained much of the story, I still like this picture.
it’s been in the making for a while - I really like this scene from the book, when Strange just walks out of the mirror like “heeey”.
and so, I’ve done it.
I think the Gentleman with thistle-down hair deserves a draw after showing up in six out of the eight Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell dreams I had.
Then there was one dream where I tried unironically to get to Lost-hope via the Raven King’s train (it had Karsa Oolong written on a glowing sign in the back which I interpreted in the dream as a brand of tea and no I have never read Malazan Book of the Fallen) and then Anthony Crowley from Good Omens showed up to destroy my ambitions in that dream by driving me around the M25 London Orbital for 2 subjective dream hours so I never got there.
FINALLY got my gf to watch Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and they managed to sum it up perfectly in Two (2) panels.
They aren’t on tumblr anymore hence me posting this, but pls follow them on twitter and give them some much deserved love @samndoesart
(Artists note: Childermass wants to kiss Norrell, do NOT @ me)
painted that doodle I did a few days ago for practice

“In Madrid the Spanish artist Francisco Goya made a sketch in red chalk of Jonathan Strange surrounded by the dead Neapolitans. In the picture Strange is seated on the ground, His gaze is cast down and his arms hang limp at his sides and his whole attitude speaks of helplessness and despair. The Neapolitans crowd around him some are regarding him hungrily others have expressions of supplication on their faces. one is putting out a tentative finger to stroke the back of his hair. it is needless to say quite different from any other portrait of Strange.”
(Large scale commission for a friend, this was a really fun challenge. I did take the liberty of doing paint instead of chalk, for ease of presentation. I’ve done my best to make the dead Neapolitans seem thoroughly grim.)
this was gonna be a series but i don’t like them enough but i spent too much time on them not to post them so here
been reading JSMN and all I can say is that Thistledown is so much scarier yet more endearing than I expected
