IM SO UPSET
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

collection of posts for a very specific dynamic
some fandom disagreements are like "I see your point but I think this other aspect of the narrative is more significant," and some are like "I don't think you can read."
I am alive. Just trying to get started on a fanfic for a musical in a language I don't speak and having Opinions on productions from fifteen years ago. As one does.
the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

saw a post on bluesky about reimagining The Iliad as a mecha war and that idea goes unbelievably hard. achilles in his legally distinct gundam cutting through dozens of enemy suits. aggamemnon in his gold-plated mech. paris using a long range sniper rifle to exploit a design flaw in achilles' armor. the gods are all various megacorps who have a stake in the war bc it'll impact their profits.
I mean if we got Ulysses 31 to work in the 80s I have no reason why this can't and shouldn't happen
Really what's it going to take for me to find a historical lesbian romance with vaguely gothic vibes? Pretty costumes and a relative innocent and a woman who is dangerous/has a dark secret but would do anything for her beloved.Carmilla with a happy ending. Jane Eyre meets the mysterious Bertha Rochester, who is rumored to be mad and whose husband died under mysterious circumstances. Rebecca but it's about The Second Mrs Dewinter and Mrs. Danvers and really toxic grief. Something very old-fashioned historical romance but their are lesbians.
(Examples only to give you the vibe. If there's a retelling etc you think I should read feel free but I just want some historical romance I didn't write in my head)
First rec would be to explore the works of Sarah Waters, whose first three books were all Victorian-era period pieces (Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, and Fingersmith). Two of them are classified as "gothic". Ironically I haven't actually read the books, but they're highly regarded and all three had TV/movie adaptations which I have seen.
The novel Fingersmith got two adaptations: One by the BBC under the original title, and one by Park Chan-wook that was retitled to The Handmaiden. The Handmaiden was a massive hit 10 years ago and you must have seen it somewhere online. That's definitely the best of the adaptations, and gets my strongest recommendation.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French film from 2019 that was also a big hit, so you likely saw it referenced online. I'm not sure if it would classfy as "gothic", but it's a haunting 18th century romantic drama. It's already been acclaimed as one of the best films of 2019/the 21st century/Of All Time.
Gentleman Jack is definitely not gothic so we may be swinging wide of your goals, but it's a two-season BBC TV series based on the life and romances of (real person) Anne Lister in the 1830s. This is the second adaptation of her life that I've seen, the first being a made-for-TV filmThe Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister.

Man, we have got to stop treating art like it has an expiration date. That show stopped airing? Doesn’t mean it can’t haunt your every waking thought. Everybody’s into this album, but you don’t have the energy for new music right now? It’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready. That movie’s fifty years old and indie as shit? Incredible, you have the chance to share it with folks who might never otherwise feel that particular punch of delight. Books don’t go bad. Shows inspire fandoms decades after they’ve wrapped up. We’re still looking at cave paintings and statue work from ancient times and letting the joy of creation bring tears to our eyes. That’s the point of art. It’s as close to immortality as we ever get. Why try to give that magic a shelf life?
A disturbing percentage of revisiting my old hyperfixations has been grabbing my friends (some of whom who weren't born yet) and going "so this is the actress I had a celebrity crush in the 90s/early 00s except I hadn't figured out I was queer yet" and realizing that I now have to explain that I really did watch Titanic 13 times and thought The English Patient was a great movie
