Ok I want to know which Disney exec ok'd the butchering of Castle in the Sky. So much funny dialogue is gone, the score is gone, Pazu's beautiful trumpet song is actual shit now. Upgrade? Motherfucker this was a murder of a classic. The movie is missing 90% of its soul. I hope the assholes that decided to "upgrade" this movie are haunted by legos, are always too hot to sleep, and always sit in the longest red lights. This movie was a huge part of my childhood so yes my blood is BOILING about this discovery. Idc if I sound like a boomer, I will die angry on this hill.

So I've since learned the version I watched recently IS the original. Sorry purists, the 2003 version is better and you cannot convince me otherwise. The extra dialogue is funny and the reorchestration is GORGEOUS. Same with Kiki's Delivery Service.

You're not alone. There are millions of fans like you who are fond of the Castle in the Sky as it was released in 2003. While there were at least a few lines I could've done without (Pazu and Sheeta talking about the obvious — good for a radio play, but probably a bit much on the screen), the extra dialogue was otherwise handled with charm, and yes, the reorchestrated score is fantastic. I can't imagine the dub without it.

Agreed. Aang is simply lovable. His goofy, fun loving initial impressions hides a person who is sweet, friendly and compassionate if at times a bit reckless. But it is so hard to even get angry at this kid. There’s a reason why Katara is attracted to him in every way throughout the show. He’s just very likable.

(That said, I don’t like talking about Ember Iskand Players because talks about that episode can turn toxic. I just shrug off that episode and pretend it didn’t happen since it basically is filler and kinda slows down momentum, even though I see what it is attempting to do.)

If I see one more person infantilize and/or vilify Aang, I’m going to mcfreakin’ lose it. 

I am exhausted. I cannot believe that 15 whole years after the airing of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I am still having to deal with people eviscerate one of the most well-written, amazing characters of all time. 

Aang is the embodiment of Buddhist philosophy, forgiveness, anti-imperialism, and anti-toxic masculinity. I simply refuse to accept the slander of his character just because he’s ‘getting in the way’ of your ship.

Honestly it’s not worth getting worked up over that episode. It’s just something that doesn’t even happen again for the rest of the show. It is not even referenced. Me, I choose to stay away from that episode and pretend it didn’t happen. That’s what I do with eps I don’t like.

I don’t know what’s worse: the smack talking of the Netflix version of Avatar The Last Airbender, or the Neverending debates surrounding the Ember Island Players episode. That is probably IMO one of my least favorites in the show; it feels like an interruption to the flow of the story despite its best intentions, and the balcony scene is basically forgotten in the next episode. I don’t think it was meant to be intended that way, but the lack of resolution strikes it as a big-lipped alligator moment more than anything else. Nonetheless, there have been many contentious discussions surrounding this episode. I on the other hand just sorta shrug this off and don’t really think about it that much. I just think the show and the Kataang relationship plays just fine without it. You don’t necessarily have to make an unresolved tension scene for the sake of it to keep audiences wondering if the leads will get together, especially if you don’t reference it again. At least in my opinion.

I am not eager to see the live action show though. I think Avatar works well as a cartoon. I can’t imagine live action doing it justice.

claiming to be progressive while turning katara into a damsel and just trauma /nothing else for six episodes was def a writing choice.. funny how the early 2000s wrote a girl boss but 2020s decided were gonna tone down Katara firey personality.. cause thats progressive??? the writers took one look at ember island katara and decided that is KATARA now.. what a choice.. sigh.

Posts like this make me laugh, because there’s no way you watched the show twice without intentionally ignoring Katara and Aang’s interactions.

Here’s the thing though, Katara and Aang only started their romantic relationship by the end of the series. What we’ve seen throughout the course of the show is their buildup.

They meet as two absolute strangers who come to find that they have a lot in common. Their world is torn up by war, and their cultures have been erased at the hands of a genocidal monarchy.

They both have goals that each are supported by the other. They take the time out of their day to talk about their feelings. They’re not at each other’s throats arguing to show some form of “sexual-tension” (these are kids mind you.)

The show isn’t about them being a romantic couple, it’s showcasing how they became a romantic couple.

These two are shown to have fun together:

These two are shown to work as a team together:

And their relationship isn’t one sided- Katara 100% had a crush on Aang.

Notice how it’s Katara initiating the final kiss, ⬆️

Another thing to remember is that: AVATAR IS NOT EXPLICITLY A LOVE STORY. IT IS NOT A SHOW EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT ROMANCE.

The romance in Avatar is only a side story to a much even bigger story. The main plot is about a group of kids from different backgrounds coming together to take down a common enemy and learn about themselves and each other along the way.

But let’s be honest, we all know why OP really wrote this. They’re upset Katara didn’t end up with Zuko. When they say “Katara and Aang had no romantic chemistry” what they really mean is “I’m upset Katara is sharing these sentimental moments with Aang and not Zuko.”

Katara and Aang had the buildup to justify them being a romantic couple. Their chemistry was always there, but you chose to ignore it because it just didn’t appeal to you personally.

I personally was quite surprised at this. I didn’t actively hate WISH, but it was only an OK movie at best, and considering it was supposed to be Disney’s 100th Anniversary, it needed to be better. That said, I want Disney to see this as a wake up call that the world IS missing 2D animation from them. Boy and the Heron proves there is an audience for it. I feel that wishing death on them is unnecessary and toxic. What we need to wish for is for them to find their way. THEY were the ones who started animation in the first place. It does no good to demonize them in spite of their less than stellar choices lately.

Not to mention she tells Muska that Laputa will be a tomb for them both.

And then proceeds to decimate the entire city (well most of it), and stay alive by sheer luck.

Not that I like this fact, but Sheeta is the only Ghibli heroine to kill her respective antagonist. If that’s not feral, I don’t know what is.

Best Ghibli girl, hands down.

You forgot that when Dola asks for her to come back down from the kite, she talks back to her and lies saying that Patsu agrees that she should be there! And she immediately finds the phone and gets to work!

Oh yeah, that scene is hilarious. I also have to say I quite liked the chemistry between Anna Paquin (Sheeta) and Cloris Leachman (Dola) in that scene. It successfully contributes to the humor. I have heard naysayers about the dub and Paquin’s turn as Sheeta, but I never understood it then and I still don’t. As far as I am concerned she does a solid job as this character, and I do like the accent she uses. Of course though, when it comes to Leachman, well, she simply WAS Dola.

Hi all! So even if I wasn't thrilled with Wish as a final product, I was really inspired by Brittney Lee's wonderful concept art for a more human-esque "Star"...so I decided to take that idea and put my own twist on it! Because as much as I like Brittney Lee's concept, I had two main thoughts in the back of my head while drawing this --

I actually liked that Star in the film wasn't explicitly male or female, and Disney hasn't ever done a non-binary main character in one of their animated films before, so I thought a more androgynous look could be interesting.

The original concept's hair makes him look A LOT like Jack Frost from Dreamwork's Rise of the Guardians, in my opinion -- and yes, although I like Jack, I don't see Star being much like him.

So -- thinking to salute the original idea of the filmmakers to take inspiration from past Disney projects -- I took visual inspiration from several characters, most from the Golden and Silver Age of Disney Animation (except for Puck from Disney's Gargoyles TV series, but come on, he's just fun), so as to play up the mute, but still very extroverted, sweet, playful personality this character would have. Much like mute side characters from some of Disney's previous works like Dopey, Dumbo, and the Sprite Sprite, you would never be in doubt about what Star is feeling (if nothing else than because like Tinker Bell, they're prone to change color like a mood ring 😂) -- but as a central character of a full feature film with a very close (possibly even romantic) bond with our heroine Asha, they would have the chance to express a wider range of feelings than their predecessors...not just through their animation, but also (I would add!) a score that captures their mercurial air and feelings as well as Fantasia blended its art seamlessly with famous classical pieces.

To close us out -- some of the instrumental pieces from previous Disney projects that served as a playlist for my image of Star while working on this! Because for me, music and Disney have always gone hand-in-hand, and honestly, a cohesive and powerful score outside of just the lyrical music numbers always makes a Disney film 150% better...and I think in Wish's case, it would've also been elevated, if its music had come together in conjunction with the instrumentals meant for each scene to create a more cohesive score.

I was mixed about WISH as well. I enjoyed it overall, but I felt the story played it too safe, and the humor was hit and miss. I did like the music though, and the animation style was a nice change of pace. Magnifico was a solid baddie as well. It was at least better than Home on the Range and Ralph Wrecks the Internet, though. Those two were rock bottom Disney as far as I am concerned.

Original Laputa Dub

Its very hard to find certain things even on the internet. Like the old "Ocean" Dragon Ball Z dub, or the Live Action Death Note Movies with there english dub?

Im sharing this on Mega. The english dub of "Laputa: Castle In the Sky", the original dub was a little diffrent. Some added dailouge and jokes? But nowadays they tend to just realise a recut version to stay closer to the original Japanese.

The original dub is hard to find, but if you're like me and prefer that version, here it is. I dunno how else to share it and feel free to share it with others. These things should be easier to find.

I am inordinately fond of this dub as well. It always has been a great one. The rescored soundtrack is a treat, and so is the acting. There are a few extra lines I could have done without (Pazu and Sheeta when they explore Laputa), but the one liners from the pirates and Muska’s delightfully nasty “You little brat! Goodbye! Enjoy the ride!” we’re priceless.
