I took almost 100 screencaps from the Avatar Aang movie to use as desktop wallpapers, so I figured I'd share some. I'll toss the first 15 or 20 in this post and if folks are interested in more, I'll reblog it with another set.

Most of these are STUNNING, GORGEOUS, AMAZING matte paintings, so they don't feature many of the characters, or if they do, the characters are usually quite small.

Obviously, spoilers ahead.

Also, anyone who leaves negative comments about the movie or bitches in the tags is getting blocked. Was the plot predictable? Sure. But 95% of movies and tv shows are very easy to predict, and everything else about this was so obviously made with love and incredible skill that I honestly don't care about a formulaic plot. I would like to enjoy one [1] thing uncritically, so if you want to complain, go somewhere else.

The man who runs Paramount

WARNING: This is gonna be a rant, so bear with me. First things first: AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER is great. A great movie—a 4.5 out of 5 follow-up to an iconic series.

What I am furious about, however, is Paramount's mishandling of the whole movie. This was meant to be a THEATRICAL release from the start, not throwaway churn for streaming. The real person to blame for this is the man who runs Paramount. HE is the reason why so many fans were furious. His reputation, by the way, is going downhill. He was once seen as Hollywood's "golden boy," but that is no longer how he is being perceived. I'm not talking about how he has alienated the fans by moving AVATAR AANG to streaming and only giving a two theater release—and how he left millions of dollars on the table. Remember Bob Chapek? He did the same, and he got kicked out. I personally believe that Mr. Ellison's time to have the same thing happen to him is coming, too. And not just because of Avatar.

This is the same man whose plot to buy Warner Bros Discovery is currently in limbo—delayed to 2027, and now forced to pay a ticking fee on account of this. This is an indication that the deal is dead on arrival. He is also getting attacked by the WGA, and more recently, a shareholder sued him for using Paramount's funds to do illegal dealings with a certain person I will not mention. Delaware is slapping him with a trial.

So what does this mean? It means that Ellison's credibility for withholding a movie that should be a widespread release and a surefire box office smash (the sellouts at the screenings are an indication of his blind obsession for subscriptions), as well as alienating talent and fans, attempted monopoly, and shady business with politics, most likely means he is not going to last much longer at Paramount. The shareholders' meeting is coming soon. July 31 and August 4. He will be facing tough questions from investors about his decisions. And unable to deflect or defend himself with weak PR.

See what I'm getting at? If there's any moment where Mr. Ellison could meet the same fate as Chapek, it could very well be as soon as this year. And it could mean that Paramount gets a better CEO who understands the value of box office hits and not outdated dreams like competing with Netflix (that dream is dead), and respects talent and audiences. Even put AVATAR AANG back in theaters where it belongs, I can dream.

All of this is conjecture and not prognostication. But I have a gut suspicion that this COULD come to reality. I am simply saying for all these reasons I despise Mr. Ellison. Wholeheartedly. He is ruining everything—our country, the industry, and his own studio. He never should have been elected. Period.

I'm not sure if that hat in the movie was made by Katara, but it would be nice if it was. I liked that she let Aang wear that first hat, though. It shows us where her heart really lies.

With Jet it struck me more as though she felt sorry for him despite being somewhat charmed. She was interested in helping him because she related to his problems. It was only after she realized Jet was using her that she become so badly disillusioned.

In a way, this movie is kinda like Aang's version of that story. Think about it: he bonds with someone who suffered trauma like he did, said person he bonds with uses and then betrays him later on, and Aang is genuinely furious—especially when he finds out that Tagah hurt his friends. (Same with Katara discovering what Jet's friends did to her brother.)

Ok I want to know which Disney exec ok'd the butchering of Castle in the Sky. So much funny dialogue is gone, the score is gone, Pazu's beautiful trumpet song is actual shit now. Upgrade? Motherfucker this was a murder of a classic. The movie is missing 90% of its soul. I hope the assholes that decided to "upgrade" this movie are haunted by legos, are always too hot to sleep, and always sit in the longest red lights. This movie was a huge part of my childhood so yes my blood is BOILING about this discovery. Idc if I sound like a boomer, I will die angry on this hill.

So I've since learned the version I watched recently IS the original. Sorry purists, the 2003 version is better and you cannot convince me otherwise. The extra dialogue is funny and the reorchestration is GORGEOUS. Same with Kiki's Delivery Service.

You're not alone. There are millions of fans like you who are fond of the Castle in the Sky as it was released in 2003. While there were at least a few lines I could've done without (Pazu and Sheeta talking about the obvious — good for a radio play, but probably a bit much on the screen), the extra dialogue was otherwise handled with charm, and yes, the reorchestrated score is fantastic. I can't imagine the dub without it.

Agreed. Aang is simply lovable. His goofy, fun loving initial impressions hides a person who is sweet, friendly and compassionate if at times a bit reckless. But it is so hard to even get angry at this kid. There’s a reason why Katara is attracted to him in every way throughout the show. He’s just very likable.

(That said, I don’t like talking about Ember Iskand Players because talks about that episode can turn toxic. I just shrug off that episode and pretend it didn’t happen since it basically is filler and kinda slows down momentum, even though I see what it is attempting to do.)

If I see one more person infantilize and/or vilify Aang, I’m going to mcfreakin’ lose it. 

I am exhausted. I cannot believe that 15 whole years after the airing of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I am still having to deal with people eviscerate one of the most well-written, amazing characters of all time. 

Aang is the embodiment of Buddhist philosophy, forgiveness, anti-imperialism, and anti-toxic masculinity. I simply refuse to accept the slander of his character just because he’s ‘getting in the way’ of your ship.

Honestly it’s not worth getting worked up over that episode. It’s just something that doesn’t even happen again for the rest of the show. It is not even referenced. Me, I choose to stay away from that episode and pretend it didn’t happen. That’s what I do with eps I don’t like.

I don’t know what’s worse: the smack talking of the Netflix version of Avatar The Last Airbender, or the Neverending debates surrounding the Ember Island Players episode. That is probably IMO one of my least favorites in the show; it feels like an interruption to the flow of the story despite its best intentions, and the balcony scene is basically forgotten in the next episode. I don’t think it was meant to be intended that way, but the lack of resolution strikes it as a big-lipped alligator moment more than anything else. Nonetheless, there have been many contentious discussions surrounding this episode. I on the other hand just sorta shrug this off and don’t really think about it that much. I just think the show and the Kataang relationship plays just fine without it. You don’t necessarily have to make an unresolved tension scene for the sake of it to keep audiences wondering if the leads will get together, especially if you don’t reference it again. At least in my opinion.

I am not eager to see the live action show though. I think Avatar works well as a cartoon. I can’t imagine live action doing it justice.

claiming to be progressive while turning katara into a damsel and just trauma /nothing else for six episodes was def a writing choice.. funny how the early 2000s wrote a girl boss but 2020s decided were gonna tone down Katara firey personality.. cause thats progressive??? the writers took one look at ember island katara and decided that is KATARA now.. what a choice.. sigh.

Posts like this make me laugh, because there’s no way you watched the show twice without intentionally ignoring Katara and Aang’s interactions.

Here’s the thing though, Katara and Aang only started their romantic relationship by the end of the series. What we’ve seen throughout the course of the show is their buildup.

They meet as two absolute strangers who come to find that they have a lot in common. Their world is torn up by war, and their cultures have been erased at the hands of a genocidal monarchy.

They both have goals that each are supported by the other. They take the time out of their day to talk about their feelings. They’re not at each other’s throats arguing to show some form of “sexual-tension” (these are kids mind you.)

The show isn’t about them being a romantic couple, it’s showcasing how they became a romantic couple.

These two are shown to have fun together:

These two are shown to deeply care for each other:

These two are shown to work as a team together:

And their relationship isn’t one sided- Katara 100% had a crush on Aang.

Notice how it’s Katara initiating the final kiss, ⬆️

Another thing to remember is that: AVATAR IS NOT EXPLICITLY A LOVE STORY. IT IS NOT A SHOW EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT ROMANCE.

The romance in Avatar is only a side story to a much even bigger story. The main plot is about a group of kids from different backgrounds coming together to take down a common enemy and learn about themselves and each other along the way.

But let’s be honest, we all know why OP really wrote this. They’re upset Katara didn’t end up with Zuko. When they say “Katara and Aang had no romantic chemistry” what they really mean is “I’m upset Katara is sharing these sentimental moments with Aang and not Zuko.”

Katara and Aang had the buildup to justify them being a romantic couple. Their chemistry was always there, but you chose to ignore it because it just didn’t appeal to you personally.

I was rooting for Katara and Aang to get together from the start. I would have been incredibly upset otherwise. I am glad they ended the show that way.

nimona (film that was saved by netflix after disney canned it along with closing the studio that was making it) and the boy and the heron (2d animated movie, the type that disney doesn't make anymore due to "limitations with the medium") getting animated feature noms at the oscars this year and not wish... bro that's funny

I personally was quite surprised at this. I didn’t actively hate WISH, but it was only an OK movie at best, and considering it was supposed to be Disney’s 100th Anniversary, it needed to be better. That said, I want Disney to see this as a wake up call that the world IS missing 2D animation from them. Boy and the Heron proves there is an audience for it. I feel that wishing death on them is unnecessary and toxic. What we need to wish for is for them to find their way. THEY were the ones who started animation in the first place. It does no good to demonize them in spite of their less than stellar choices lately.

Knocking Muska out the second she has a chance (good on her):

And using her face as a hammer:

Not to mention she tells Muska that Laputa will be a tomb for them both.

And then proceeds to decimate the entire city (well most of it), and stay alive by sheer luck.

Not that I like this fact, but Sheeta is the only Ghibli heroine to kill her respective antagonist. If that’s not feral, I don’t know what is.

Best Ghibli girl, hands down.

You forgot that when Dola asks for her to come back down from the kite, she talks back to her and lies saying that Patsu agrees that she should be there! And she immediately finds the phone and gets to work!

Oh yeah, that scene is hilarious. I also have to say I quite liked the chemistry between Anna Paquin (Sheeta) and Cloris Leachman (Dola) in that scene. It successfully contributes to the humor. I have heard naysayers about the dub and Paquin’s turn as Sheeta, but I never understood it then and I still don’t. As far as I am concerned she does a solid job as this character, and I do like the accent she uses. Of course though, when it comes to Leachman, well, she simply WAS Dola.

I believe the dislike of Anna Paquin’s voice stems from her sounding much older than her character, as well as the small dips into her New Zealand accent. Though I feel like both of those factors give her character a little more intrigue.

Absolutely. And she does not sound that mature to me. There is still a touch of childishness I sense in her voice. Same with Van der Beek. Then again I am a fan of the Ghibli dubs in general. This is one of my top 5 faves.
