Auguste Delaherche had grown up in an artistic environment where his uncle’s extensive antique collection, inclusive of framed paintings, engravings, furniture and ceramics of the 16th-century, inspired and educated the obvious consuming passion he developed.  Delaherche studied at l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs from 1877 to 1882, with a break to fill his military duties.  He took courses at stained glass and metalwork studios, which served the early years of his career as he worked on the restoration of stained glass and became the director of a metal plating workshop for the Paris firm of Christofle.  Delaherche loved to develop singularities around objects of simple form.  When in 1887, after years of working in various industrial arts firms, Delaherche acquired a Paris studio he began his true call as a ceramist; concentrating on simple forms with thick drip glazes inspired by Japanese pottery, occasionally employing relief decorations or modeling vases and dishes in vegetal shapes.  Delaherche’s continual experimentation with kiln techniques enabled him to produce remarkably subtle gradations of color. By 1904, he had achieved professional maturity with his robust shapes inspired by Oriental, Greek or rustic pottery, thus helping to usher in the era of modern studio pottery.  Follow more of his passion at http://www.jasonjacques.com/works/auguste-delaherche/
