When I have an emotion, I think maybe there is a painting there. I must go to that place to discover it, ... go further.
Painting is a process of continuous investigation, a place of revelations and self-knowledge. A way of doing, saying and experiencing things.
The contrasts of Shanghai, a city where beauty and rawness coexist in the same plane, have become an inspiring source of my new works.

Barricades (My Studio, My Head)
The canvases are inspired by an idea: create a metaphorical paint barricade in front of all the toxic information that comes to us every day from a cruel world. The news conspires to distance us from an emotional experience.
Painting is a challege to find a new sense of reality. A new entry point because there is a deeper underlying truth.
In my case the barricade is created with three basic elements of the painting: the brushstroke, the “veladura” “glaze” (that produces a veiled effect with very thin layers of paint) and the pasting.
The glaze creates a surface apparently empty but full of pictorial nuances and poetic suggestions where we can take refuge.
My studio means my mind.

"J'aime l'émotion qui corrige la règle" gives title to the latest series of collages by Juan Olivares, technique in which he has focused his plastic research in recent years.
All his work forms a poetic fabric that questions the formal limits of the pictorial and its relationship with the space it inhabits.
Support, surface and space in continuous review.
The attributed sentence Juan Gris expresses very well the way of feeling and doing of the artist. The idea of transience, the passing of time, the emotional trace that some experiences leave us, uncertainty, chance and discovery are present in all his works.

Glints
A flash or glint beyond a luminous phenomenon is also a sudden manifestation of some quality or attitude.
The idea of discovery is the thread of the collages. In the process of collage creation, the fragments of cut paper can establish infinite possible combinations ... but there is a moment in which you discover a fascinating relationship, a flash, a revelation.It´s a perfect moment.
Collage technique allows me to create a painting without support, without limits. A work of irregular and infinite format, a painting without the limits of the canvas. My collage works connect with two main ideas:
One of them can be found in the philosopher Heraclitus. Heraclitus affirms that the basis of everything resides in an incessant change. Everything is transformed into a process of continuous birth and destruction to which nothing escapes.
The other idea is found in the phrase of the French poet Paul Valery:
“Un poème n´est jamais fini, juste abandonné . A poem never ends, it is only abandoned. In the same way, a collage never ends ... it is the result of an "abandonment", it is the moment in which we decide to stop ... it is the moment in which we discover a fascinating relationship, a revelation that can calm thirst for a moment.
The “Gallera”
All my work is a poetic weft that questions the formal limits of the pictorial and its relation with the space that it inhabits. Support, surface and space in continuous review.
The traditional genres of art have been diluted in unlimited forms of expression, including painting, which overcomes the traditional limits of the support and which, in its expansion, also appropriates the three-dimensional space while encompassing other techniques and disciplines.
From this new perspective, we will not talk about "painting", we will talk about “the pictorial”, an expression that groups more creative possibilities.
In 2008, I made a pictorial installation in a singular espace, La Gallera.
La Gallera is a building built in 1870 that housed cockfights. It has a beautiful geometric plant with twelve sides and two heights, currently rehabilitated as an exhibition hall.The architecture of the space conditions the exhibition and forces us to create a work exclusively for the space.
The work created for the exhibition " Baste the space " was the result of the use of three-dimensional space as a pictorial support. Work plays with space and is part of it. The viewer can go through the painting and enter it. The architecture of the place allows to observe the work from the first floor and at the same time walk around it. In this walk we can have many different points of view.
The work demands a different attitude from the viewer, understanding the spectator as activator of the work's senses.On the floor there is a vinyl that we can step on, the vinyl is an image of a collage. I wanted to introduce in this work the image of the painting, not the painting physically. The image accentuate the idea of hybridization.The structure is iron lacquered in yellow and refers to the old iron swings where I used to play when I was a child.

Why painting?
Painting is a poetic emotional experience.
The painting proposes a different way of looking, ... also of feeling. Painting helps to understand reality and makes new realities. It´s necessary to be awake, to have an eye with appetite, sensitive and permeable.
Everything is painting:
The shadows projected on a chromatic gray asphalt…, some luminous green shoes with blue nuances that cross white strips of a zebra crossing…, a beautiful dress and its dance, the yellow noise of the traffic ...
The painting allows an ecstasy of an experience.
In the city, maybe Shanghai, New York o Valencia…, I feel like a nervous tightrope walker searching for a password in the mirrors of buildings. Meanwhile, in my head, the Archduke Trio sounds and the walk reminds me of Robert Walser and the muscles of the clouds by Leonard Cohen.
Some of the best moments pass in urban details. It's the beauty of an instant, fleeting and casual. A perfect moment.
