First Chizuru and now Azusa had stopped coming in. Sitting on a single stool, picking through the fully grown herbs flourishing at the windowsills of the nursery, Jude couldn't help but feel a little disconsolate. Especially over the loss of one of his best and first nurses. She had taught him so much and yet, there hadn't been the opportunity to return the favor at all.
"Hm..." But so was life and people came and gone just like the days passing them by; it would have done his conscious some good, however, if they had at least given their proper farewells. In this sort of light, Jude just didn't have the heart to cross off their names from the registry, idly poking at a basil sapling sullenly. I at least hope they're well..
"Hm…? That was not my intention, but I apologize if I startled you."
An old habit, he supposed. If Jude were a target, he would’ve been dead before he knew what hit him. Ah, but best not to let his mind stray back to those times…
"It was not meant as an act to repay you for what you have done for me, but simply a favour between comrades and friends."
"Friends" was used very loosely here.
"But in the way of repayment, I do have something for you," he said, presenting the basket he had been holding. It was full of fruits and other nice, exotic snacks that were probably quite expensive. "It is not much for what you have done for me, but… I am incredibly grateful for all of your help. I only hope that I will not have to rely so extensively on you in the future."
Yeah right.
"Ah..." Jude's blush goes from light to a double shade of crimson once Alcor begins acting so humble. Were they friends? That was flattering, albeit, there wasn't much to their bond besides doctor and patient...Trying to manage the large gift package now pushed into his arms--how much did this cost?! He's never even seen some of these foods!--Jude jumbled for words of gratification...
"It is not much for what you have done for me, but… I am incredibly grateful for all of your help. I only hope that I will not have to rely so extensively on you in the future."
Extensively... in... the future... huh....
"I... I can only hope so," and for some reason, Jude had found this souring feeling at the pit of his stomach that ruined his previously enlightened mood all together. "Even if you bring business, this is the sort of thing that I can't really say I want you making a habit out of.."
"Do you? I will make an effort to search for employees on your behalf, then."
Note that he had entered the clinic without a sound, speaking up from behind Jude when he heard the young doctor talking to himself.
"HHh--!!"
Nearly jumping two feet out of his skin from the unexpected visitor, Jude stumbled forward a few steps before he caught himself, heart thumping against his chest plate dangerously as he resisted a groan. ".... Did you have to sneak behind me like that..?" It was probably all in good fun, but Jude would have preferred a simple greeting without the subtle heart attack included. "A-Anyway.. you don't have to do that for me. If you're trying to repay me, just be sure to keep out of trouble.." After all, every time Alcor or someone he knew came in, they were practically near death.. Not that Jude minded helping, mind you, it was his job, but it would put his mind at ease some to know that he wasn't helping out a bunch of criminals or mafioso.
"Work's been slow but... we probably need more staff..."
He nodded, barely managing to keep a very unprofessional girn at his superior’s failed drink attempt from spreading across his face. It had sense to order all the necessities at once, though he did wish that the delivery people had decided to lend a hand.
"I’ll look forward to learning how to use all of them." He was still a little bit winded, but the interest in his voice was clear. Unlike school, he hopefully wouldn’t fall asleep here; he really did want to learn as much as he could here. After some silence and a few more sips of water, a question came to him. "This might be a strange question, but why did you decide to open a clinic?"
"Hm... good question." Leaning back against the closest wall to him, Jude looked up at the white wash ceiling thoughtfully, swirling the water in his paper cup all the while.
"I just want to help people.. I don't really need more of a reason than that right?" It was the most obvious answer, lackluster even, but that was all the tiny doctor had to give, to be honest. After the past year he spent on such a fate turning adventure, meeting all sorts of colorful people, and learning so much with what he could do with his knowledge... the fact that his skills were needed in this world... well... he was more than happy to give it his all. Even a plain guy like me can make a difference, too. "I've always studied and had interest in doctoring.. you could say I'm just a meddlesome guy, ahah.."
I CAN HEAL PEOPLE WITH MY BARE HANDS!!!!
pardon my language doctor but i must ask you to Do Your Fucking Job
Would've saved me the work if you had fuckin done yours
You come into my clinic, bringing your dead boyfriend
"It’s no trouble. After all, you’ve been helping me plenty with learning as a nurse-in-training." He really was grateful for it. Though Natsume hadn’t been learning long, Jude had been a very good teacher and he hadn’t felt overwhelmed by the amount he still had to learn.
The rest of the moving had gone along rather smoothly, though Natsume could say with confidence that heavy lifting was not his strong suit. He had needed to take a few quick breaks between some of the larger boxes to get rid of all the lactic acid that had built up from the exertion.
"Thank you." He spoke somewhat breathlessly, taking a sip of water before continuing. "It wasn’t too bad. Hopefully the next shipment won’t have so many items, though." He let out a brief laugh.
"Speaking of, what is all of this for?" He figured something in those boxes might be related to his training at some point and it wasn’t as though they were busy enough that he had to return to the front desk immediately.
Taking a clumsy drink of his own water, it nearly dribbled down chin as he turned towards the other when queried, catching himself before it drenched his work coat. Well, that had been embarrassing....
"I, uh, sorta... ordered in bulk. Latex gloves, syringes, scrubs... I didn't want to fall short in case of an emergency so.. "I'm sure we won't be getting large shipments like this for a long time! Don't worry, haha..."
"Soon, I should hope. Although there may be some use for the saplings and younger plants too as not all of them need to be fully matured to be useful."
"Is that so? You'll have to let me know which ones! I'd like to take note of that, too.." In light of all of the close observations he had been conducting, Jude's notes had become heavily detailed as of late; he was careful to record information about each plant type that sat upon the counter side coveted by that perpetual orange sunlight pouring through the curtain-less windows. It was a little barren looking now, to be honest, but once the rest of their tiny indoor garden began flourishing, surely it could bring some life to this white washed room. "Ah, uh, you'll have to give me a second, I just want to jot down a quick sketch of what these forming leaves look like for reference..."
"The plants are growing nicely! When do you think we'll be able to utilize them?"
Whew sorry I've been busy lately! But if someone wants a starter just hit me up! I'll make 3 or 5 opens at the most!
Though the clinic was just about established at this point, not to mention such a loyal and hardworking staff with him, Jude was still unpacking and rearranging boxes as he saw fit. Perhaps one didn't truly settle down in a new place until everything was sorted and comfortable. Hearing the front entrance chimes jingle, the small doctor turned on cue, offering a reflexive smile.
"Oh, welcome! Is there something I can do for you?"
Colleagues {Chizuru & Jude}
"Sounds great! Well this is my full-time job, so if you need to we could always schedule it for our lunch, or maybe something when we both finish work? I’m free whenever i’m not working." she did manage to keep some time to herself, even with balancing work and keeping the apartment clean and getting the groceries. She almost felt obligated to take care of her roommates, and sometimes found it difficult to ask them for help.
"No problem, i’ll make a start on copying them tonight. There’s quite a few so i’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like." there were plenty of alternatives for each complaint, so a lot of different tastes could be accounted for. Chizuru had left behind many recipes at home, being aware that not all of them had good effects.
Jude seemed so excited by the prospect of herbal remedies and home brews, so much so that it was contagious, causing her to be unable to stop smiling. "A plant nursery sounds wonderful! That way we’ll know exactly where each ingredient came from and we could refine the recipes."
"Hmm... It seems like our best shot would be to try something after we close up the clinic for the day.. Although, I could always cook us up something right here if it ever comes to that?" Given that he had spent the entirety of the year independently, give or take the few mishaps and adventures he had encountered along the way, Jude had learned quite the number of recipes and concoctions that seemed to work both in the divisions of taste and nutrition. Maybe it was just his doctor's intuition but experimenting with food was just about the same with studying medicine--you could never know what worked or not without trying it first. "It'll be nothing grand but I don't mind saving the money either. Eating out is slowly becoming too much of a leisure, haha." Musings aside, Jude finally finished writing down the extended notes, glancing over them diligently and nodding to himself once he was satisfied. Man, this is great! Having Chizuru on board was going to help improve just about everyone's experiences here, huh? He couldn't help but further his already pleased smile, stretching from ear-to-ear entirely.
"I'll set aside some space then! We can use a lot of the windowsills, too and add some greenery. Once we can decide on some recipes, I'll order the supplies for us and we can get straight to work! This'll be such a beneficial addition to the clinic, I know it!"
