All the self-confidence quickly cracked and crumbled when Jacob crouched down and suddenly held his hands in place. Wheaty didnât even really dare to breathe, his yell long died down as he was so close to the Herald now. His eyes were like the ice on the frozen Silver lake, his hair he opposite and his words so calm and silent as if he was also the force that pulled you down beneath the waterâs surface. Making Wheaty hold completely still and soak up every last word, only then realizing how big Jacob was. Like a resting mountain, like a wolf waiting to attack.
But when Jacob told him what happened to his parents, it was as if he actually had thrown him off a cliff. That twisting and tight feeling deep in the pit of your guts. Pulling on him and tearing him out of his body. There were no tears at first. There only were his eyes widening and mouth slightly agape, trying to understand what he just had been told in passing. As if it was nothing important.Â
But then Wheaty shook his head, slowly, eyes always staying on Jacob and filling with tears.Â
âNoâŠ. no⊠youâre a liarâŠâ
This couldnât be. His parents were missing. They were only missing. They couldnât be dead⊠Wheaty knew what dead meant. He had seen dead animals. They werenât here anymore. Not really. They didnât move and didnât feel and didnât⊠well, they werenât anymore. Killed. Like the animals that got hunted. With their open maws and dull eyes and flies sitting on their bodies. His Nimaamaa and Nindede couldnât be like thisâŠÂ
âLiar⊠liar! Liar!â
That fire Jacob had apparently missed got ignited, the spark coming from Jacob himself, and as Wheaty wasnât held anymore, he could react however he wanted. In all his desperate anger - he didnât want to believe this man! He didnât want to hear that! He wasnât weak! And his parents werenât dead⊠no. No, no, no⊠he was lying! The child couldnât control his own emotions, swamped by them, not knowing how to handle this along with Jacob saying it all so completely calm. The shock and disbelief quickly turning into pure ire because of that. He had never been that upset and angry. He just wanted to⊠to make the whole world hurt, because he felt the same wayâŠ
Pulling the knife back again, Wheaty just tried to get more force into his attack - aiming for exactly that spot Jacob had guided the tip of the blade to. Right at his chest. He didnât even know what would happen if he managed to stab Jacob, he didnât think about it. But he was attacking him - an attack that would quickly turn into thrown little fists, kicking boots, scratching fingernails and biting baby teeth.Â
no response to the tiny wailing , the cries that sounded oh so familiar . wanted to make the world hurt ? how fitting . that was something the pair had in common . there was no response to the elder brother being a liar , because of the fear the rage shown they both knew that to be untrue . crisp , blue eyes watched the other with interest . not curious but watchful , this response was expected . a child tossed into this hurricane , this whirlwind of emotional and physical turmoil the boy could only take so much . so there was some leeway granted .Â
then a shift in the air , something ferocious as the weapon was handled somewhat better . still , eyes never left the boy as the knife is plunged forward . it sunk into chest , the herald of the mountains did not move , did not flinch and while the blade managed to penetrate cloth and skin it merely broke the surface . while spite and anger fueled the boy , there was no strength behind the attack , physical strength .Â
blood began to seep out from around the tip , soaking in fatigues until a large hand comes up and wrenches away the weapon . flipping it over in his palm the blade was sunk into the wooden boards beneath them several inches . all the while eyes never leave the young pup .Â
' Â use it boy , use that anger . never forget it , hold it inside of you . Â ' Â the soldier urged . Â ' Â it's what makes you strong , what protects you from this fuckin' world . you don't need them , you don't need anyone but me . i'm all you got left , pup . i'm all you have in this shit hole and i'll raise you right . i'll make you strong , the others were too weak . Â ' Â standing once more , the beast loomed over the boy . chin raised , ice blue eyes regarding the boy .Â
' you get your anger , boy . you get it but not for long . pick yourself up , this is your fuckin' reality now . do you understand ? what happened , happened . can't change shit . but you can move forward , learn from this . understand that beneath me ? ain't no one gonna take nothing away from you again .  '  a thick finger moves out and down , pointing toward the other . it was calloused , the skin ruined long ago . never properly taken care of . rough on the outside as on the inside . Â
