VINTAGE-STYLE MOVIE IN A VINTAGE-STYLE THEATRE

Hello everyone! I’m so thrilled to be seeing all the snow melt away, as I just came back from Jamaica. Compared to when we left, I see grass and bulbs already coming up. YEAHHHH! (I hate winter)!

What about you? Are you a winter lover?

My husband and I went to see La La Land Saturday evening, which was great timing before the Oscars took place. (Absolutely loved the movie, but was hoping it received “Best Movie”)! We saw it in a retro cinema in downtown Barrie, “The Uptown”.

Totally loved the vintage vibe of the theatre. The outside and the inside have been kept in the “old school” style of a gone-by era.....

Inside the foyer are two of the original red velvet chairs, which have now been replaced in some of the theatre rooms with wicked leatherette recliners....

Needless to say, there was some snoring happening because the chairs were out of this world comfortable.....

This is the only theatre I know of that has a licensed bar. The craftsmanship is just gorgeous....

They have their own wall of fame, in black and white, showing different celebrities that have been in the theatre, as the Uptown hosts the Barrie Film Festival........

A great job of refurbishing an amazing building back to it’s original glory! We need to save more of the past to hand on to the next generation, as part of their history.

Do you appreciate the old brought back, or are you modern all the way?

I love the old architecture. A great city to see fabulous architecture is Chicago......

(I should have been born in Victorian times, with today’s amenities...)

BEFORE AND AFTER--SMALL DESK

Hello everyone!

Well, we are well on our way into the new year. Christmas and New Year’s are behind us, and now looking forward to SPRING!!!!

Speaking of Christmas...When my brother showed up for the Christmas holidays, he also brought with him, a small, UNLOVED, desk/table. He came in the front door, but left this little desk in my garage, unbeknownst to me, and said, “Oh! I’ve brought you a small project!”

The side panels, and the under support joints all needed re-gluing. The bottom of the drawer also needed a total replacement......(which must have had water damage at some point. The board had split into many layers, and was warped).

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I was able to work on my little project about a week ago.

As the temperature out in the garage was rather cold for gluing, I took the desk down into the basement and was able to re-glue all the joints.

It took me a little bit to decide how I was going to re-finish it. I couldn’t decide if I wanted a tarnished silver, or matte black. In the end, I chose to paint the desk with black chaulk paint and dark wax as the final treatment.

I distressed the edge of the desk and the edge of the drawer, but didn’t distress the legs....

At this point, the drawer still had no bottom.

I took the whole drawer frame with me to Home Depot. I showed up carrying the frame to the wood department, and found a staff member right away to help. I told her “I needed a bottom for the drawer, as I couldn’t put anything in it!” She laughed and agreed.....

I was able to get a piece of MDF board, and have it cut for $5.47 with taxes. Perfect! Since the desk was free to begin with.

So, it cost $5.47, plus about 3 hours of my time. But I love it now, and it makes a wonderful addition to a spare bedroom.

Isn’t it great when a surprise project works out!!!! I certainly wasn’t looking for a desk, or a PROJECT, but love it now. (The chair I already had, and is very fitting with the desk).

Well, have fun doing your re-finishing/re-purposing, and remember...it’s just paint, so it’s easy to fix if something goes wrong, or you don’t like it, you just start again....Until next time, Judy

FOUND OBJECTS FOR THE GARDEN

Well, hello everyone! Great day today, weather-wise...nice not to have rain, even though we needed it so desperately.

I just love finding unusual things to put in my garden to add interest and whimsy. You know what I love even better...when I find them for FREE!!I Just picked up two, yes two, wooden step ladders at the end of a driveway just waiting for me to find them. I have looked in antique shops, but they want so much for them. They were both very scruffy, but I was painting them anyway....

One I painted a canary yellow, and one was painted a bright turquoise....

The canary yellow one sits outside my kitchen window. The houses are actually fence post pieces I painted to look like the “Jellybean Row Houses” in St. John’s, Newfoundland, (see my previous blog post about my painted houses). I was born in England, but grew up in St. John’s, so these colourful houses bring back wonderful childhood memories now that I have lived in Ontario for many, many years.

The second ladder I painted a bright turquoise...

The items on the ladder I bought from a thrift store. I like the ladder semi-buried in the garden...it gives the appearance that it is supposed to be there instead of leaning against the house ready for use.

The colours I chose do have a connection to the back deck. I used the same colour family for articles there...

And, yes, those are canvases of Cuba on the back wall. They are interior pictures, so I bring them in at night.

Two other items I found at a garage sale at a local ice-cream parlor that also sold collectibles, were a vintage metal cooler, and a very old metal stool....

I lucked in, and got these fabulous pieces for $15.00 for the pair. The name on the cooler is “KAMPKOLD”.

I cleaned up the cooler, but left it in its original state...

The stool was painted...

I left the seat original. It looks a bit like vinyl flooring....

Another piece found at the end of a driveway, was this cute double-sided chaulk board...

The black board was re-painted on both sides with chaulk paint,

and the frame was also given a coat of bright green chaulk paint,

but I haven’t found a home for it yet.....

Summer is almost coming to an end, but there are still treasures to be found, (maybe even for FREE)!!!!!!

THE WHITE EFFECT 2016

Well hello everyone! We, as Canadians, have finally got our summer. Now we just need RAIN to counter the heat.

Last June my husband and I went to Niagara-On-The-Lake for the “White Effect Dinner”, (see previous blog post). Here is a link of last year’s video. We went again this year with another couple. (The above picture is from this year). There were around 700 people last year, but I think it was surpassed this time around. They held it at the base of the Brock Monument for the second year in a row. We lucked in, and had amazing weather. You purchase your table, are totally responsible for the linens, dishes, cutlery and decor, and everything must be white, including your apparel.

I was quite surprised that a number of people took pictures of my centrepiece for their ideas for next year...

Last year we had amazing fireworks, as you can see from the video, but this year we only had the sparklers......

We all stayed in a B & B together, and then went our separate ways the next morning....My husband and I saw a play, and our friends went to Stratford and St. Jacobs....

I can honestly say, that this affair is totally mind-boggling...to see this huge group of people transform the crecscent, at the base of the Brock Monument, into a mammoth dining room in half an hour. It certainly is a MUST SEE!!!!!

It's amazing how you can re-use something old and make it GRAND....

MAKING IT SILVER

Hello everyone! How is your weekend going? Can’t believe there was a slight snow-fall this morning! Everything looks like SPRING, but the temperatures sure don’t reflect the same.....

I bought two glass Hurricane domes a while ago, but needed bases for them both. Something that the diameter of the dome would fit.

With a bit of searching, and some inginuity, I found a very simple Oriental wall plaque that just fit the bill......

The candles and the domes fit perfectly on the glass dish...

I used them for a period of time as is, but wanted to use them in June, coming, for the “White Effect” Dinner in Niagara-On-The-Lake. My husband and I went last year by ourselves. This year we are going back with another couple. See the official video of last year’s dinner here.....For this dinner, you have to take your own table linens, table decor, and dishes. Food can be ordered from about 5 participating restaurants, or you can take your own. The whole dinner is held outside.....

The glass domes would stop the breeze from blowing the candles out. I also needed to get some white candles instead of the green ones. As the bases are so dark, I thought painting them silver, ( I didn’t have white paint readily available), would make them blend into the white decor far better than the dark brown. Plus, I think they would suit for other occations too!

I actually used chalk paint as a primer. It covered the glass and the wood.

I then gave them one quick coat of silver.....

Along with silver chargers, the painted bases mix wonderfully with this table decor. This is a practice run for the table decor for the “White Effect” Dinner.

I’ll get my girl-friend to set up her table as well, and we’ll see what we can merge together.

I know this center piece looks really huge, but some of the tables from last year were set up like a wedding.....Again, here is the video, so take a gander......

LARGE STRIPES INSIDE -- LARGE STRIPES OUTSIDE

Well, Hello everyone...Hope all is well?

Since my last post, much has gone on!

The downed tree that filled my backward, has been cleared......

My husband and I took a trip to Cuba.....We did a duo stay of 3 nights in Havana....

And 4 nights in Varadero at an All-Inclusive resort....

The last activity done, was to add 5 1/2″ stripes to the dining-room wall....

This dark green carries right through to the office area at the back of the house.

Just to break up the continuity, I decided to paint 5 1/2″ horizontal stripes of the lighter shade of green that is throught the rest of the dining room, and throughout the main floor......

I measured and taped off my wall to paint.....

Removed the painter’s tape....

I love how it distinguished the dining area from the office area....

Don’t be afraid to try a vivid pattern. A good place to start a small project of such intensity, is a powder room or entranceway....

I had been thinking of putting some large stripes on my dining room wall for some time, and I’m so glad that I finally dove right in and did it!!!!

THE CALM AFTER THE STORM -- PART 2

Hello!

Last time, I posted about a downed tree that fell during the ice storm that we had on Easter weekend....I just wanted to post some more pictures showing the enormity of the branch that fell, and is still filling our backyard....

Tony, my husband went out and stood in the middle of the branches so that the proportions could be seen better.

We’re still waiting for the Town to come and have a look at it.....Hopefully this week!

It’s supposed to be SPRING, but it’s snowing again. I think we should be in Cuba....We’re actually going, but I want to be there right now. My poor flowers just don’t know if they should be growing and blooming or be dormant. (I think I need to bring my winter Sorels back up from the basement. Since I put them away, winter is still here. I had to bring a snow shovel back out already).

THE CALM AFTER THE STORM

Well Hello everyone! I’m now able to use the internet. It, and the cable were down for most of the weekend. Plus, I had family members for a few days, so not a good time to be on the computer anyway.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter, even with the horrific ice storm...

I saw this fruit platter on Facebook, and just had to make one for Easter dinner...

This is what everything looked like by Friday afternoon....

These are my tulips. I think they’ll be O.K. though. They’re pretty hearty.

Did you have any damage to your property as an after-math????? My backyard is full of TREE.....

The tree is on the other side of the fence, on green belt owned by the Town. I have reported it to them and they say I’ll have someone here to look at it very shortly. I had them come about 3 years ago to get them to cut it down, as it’s a Manitoba maple, (pretty much known as a WEED tree), but they would only thin it out, now they’ll have to take it down.....(All I can say is YEAHHHH!!! as I absolutely hate the tree).

This is how lucky we were not to have damage to the house.....

The squirrels seem to like it as is...now they can scurry around almost horizontally instead of straight up. The funny thing is, this is our second tree to come down since August of last year, (see post here). We got brand new neighbours a week before the 1st one came down in a wind storm.

Both times, all they had in the way of debris was a few twigs....”What’s up with that?” HaHa!

We were so fortunate in both cases on how so strategically the trees fell without incurring any damage to either house.

I hope you didn’t suffer any damage or major clean-up?

This is my “Getting Ready For Easter” dining table right now. I haven’t actually set the table for Easter dinner, but will get to that on Good Friday. I will be having 14 for Easter dinner on Saturday evening.

Even though I don’t have children at home anymore, I still like to decorate for every occasion that comes along....
