Thoughts About Fantastic Beasts

So I needed to blergh my thoughts somewhere - this must be the place. I respect other people’s wish to avoid spoilers, even though I don’t know that this is very spoliery so thoughts beyond the cut. 

THINGS THAT ARE SO CUTE

EDDIE REDMAYNE SO CUTE - We knew it before FB and we will know it long after, but it still needs to be said.

NIFFLER SO CUTE - I anticipated cuteness, but not so MUCH cuteness.

PICKETT SO CUTE - I want a partner who is as loyal and sassy as Pickett. 

DEMIGUISE BABYSITTER SO CUTE - I loved it’s fur and it’s big, wide eyes. Damn... I am a sucker. 

QUEENIE & JACOB SO CUTE - Yes, I did fall for it. And YES. I DID LOVE THE DEMIGUISE PASTRIES FUCK YOU OK IT WAS MAGICAL AND I LOVED IT. 

1920′s MAGICAL NEW YORK CITY SO CUTE - I loved the setting. Just absolutely loved it and don’t think we could have asked for more. 

OK so now maybe some less cute stuff? 

There wasn’t any Shaw payoff. Jon Voight - I mean, it’s Jon Voight! And I know that we’re working on setting up a whole series of movies and things so we can’t resolve everything... Trust me, I get that. But Daddy Shaw’s revenge and Whatever Happened to Baby Langdon feel so.... Blech. 

Why Grindelwald, why? It could be that we just don’t know enough. The beauty of HP was that even though we knew they couldn’t cram everything in, we could fill in the blanks elsewhere. But Grindelwald’s presence begs so very many questions: Why is he in America? It can’t be only for the Obscurus, can it?  How long had he been masquerading as Graves? Why can no one except our main characters ever figure out or sense the use of Polyjuice (or whatever other magic masking was used?) 

Johnny Depp reveal was just meh. I think this has to do with not knowing enough about Grindelwald to know what this is supposed to mean. Maybe we needed just a little bit slower of a hover on some of those newspaper clippings to really understand. But my husband (a HP movie only as a favor to my wife viewer) in particular was like: Ugh, Johnny Depp? Why? Why do we care even?!  

The magic was too magical and to me ultimately problematic. Why were the wizards and witches we saw all so powerful? Like, I know Credence and obscurus - I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about rebuilding New York City by having a single wizard walk along the twisted beams, pulling them back into shape. I’m talking about self-creating, self-baking strudel. I get the spectacle, I get the pull. But I also appreciated all of the nuance of magic that we’re used to experiencing. Where do we go from here? I just felt like it was so powerful compared to what we’ve seen in the past. I’ve also thought about possible plot reasons. (#1: Wizards used to be more powerful - well, HP takes place less than one generation [we’re talking wizards here, right?] away that that seems sort of impossible. #2: American wizards are more powerful than all of the Brit wizards we’re used to - well, I’m American and I can’t even make a good argument for that. #3: I’m too picky and purist - well, that is the most likely thing.)

The truth is, Lily doesn’t mean to swipe right on the guy’s profile. Really. But she’s in the middle of demonstrating the super fast data connection that a customer can expect if they switch to her carrier and she just, you know, sometimes she gets excited and her hands kind of move on their own, and anyways, she nailed the sale and made the customer really happy so that’s totally a win, right?

And, oh. Oh gosh.

He must have also swiped right.

Oh wow.

She keeps her phone in her pocket for the rest of her shift because it’s absolutely not professional to think about the cute tall guy she just matched with while she’s trying to explain minutes and phone models. Less dating, more data, that’s her mantra. But okay, she did happen to notice that the cute tall guy also has good hair. And really nice arms. And soft eyes. And…

Less dating! her inner voice chirps. More data!

She puts her phone in her locker instead and her head back in the game, and truly, really, that’s her excuse for tripping over a pile of boxes in the back room when she walks in at the end of her shift and finds cute tall guy with the nice arms and good hair actually standing there. And he must have lightning fast reflexes on top of everything else because he lets go of his hand truck just in time to catch her by the shoulders and stand her back upright.

“Sorry,” the guy says amiably. His hands are still on her shoulders and he’s so tall, she has to look up, way up, to meet his soft eyes. “Hey, aren’t you…” his voice trails off with a quirk of the lips.

“Yeah,” Lily answers. “And aren’t you?”

“Yeah,” he laughs.

In the background, a jaunty song begins to play.
