(( Wouldnt he get curious sometimes on what is up with the player had left the controller for a while and hearing commotion going on? ))
Most characters had the ability to be patient when the controller was left alone. They understood that sometimes, being left alone was just part of the procedure, and they couldn’t blame the player for needing to leave. Most of the time, it wasn’t their fault.
Unfortunately. Sonic wasn’t very patient. He was so infamously IMpatient that most editions of his games would cause his games to end after 10 minutes with a ‘Time Over’ so that he wouldn’t be forced to sit there and twiddle his thumbs and potentially break character.
Now was something kind of different though.
Sonic had been sitting a while now, tapping his foot in impatience, as he liked to do when no one had touched the controller for a while. He didn’t understand it! They had made it all the way to Star Light Zone together! Why had he just left?
He was trying his very hardest to sit still. It was a slog waiting for them to come back, the timer was already cranking on six minutes now. Where WAS he-
Then, there was a loud clatter, and Sonic couldn’t help but stumble. What was going on out there?... The Orbinauts and Bombs up ahead tried to get his attention and warned Sonic not to break character. Who knows what kind of disastrous effects it could have on the game?
But... what happened had made him curious, and he put a gloved, pixellated hand to the screen to his immediate side, looking out into the real world around him, a gentle fizzling sound and feeling running through his fingertips as he looked out his scanline, CRT window into the world.
He couldn’t see what was going on, but he could hear it. Crashing, yelling, crying, things being knocked over and with every new, harsh sound he flinched. As it built on itself, Sonic had to admit he was getting worried. Not worried about his game, the game could take care of itself. It was a constant, it was going through the same few motions over and over again. What was going on out there?... He only had a small view of.
As the commotion picked up, though, it died down, and Sonic felt himself fill with a deep, sorrowful worry-
But then, he had died.
Not in the literal sense, but the game had killed him.
And the poor player had been had been on his last life. Sonic’s own, selfish rule, used against him.
As the Game Over text had subsided, the jingle had played and the screen had faded out... all of the Star Light Zone badniks began to chatter amongst themselves as they left the now-dissipating playfield that the screen hadn’t even scrolled to yet, which had immediately warped into a condensed Green Hill Zone river, only a screen size big for the Title Screen, which left Sonic out on the studio floor.
Their jobs were done. At least for a while. Sonic’s wasn’t. He had a Title Screen and an Auto-Demo to run, but he still had a small window before he had to go up there... but his attention was still fixated on the screen-.
A hand then placed itself on Sonic’s shoulder, and the blue hedgehog jolted out of his trance.
“Sonic... are you okay?...”
...It was Robotnik. His Bad Guy.
As Sonic heard the cheerful “SEGA!” jingle... he knew it was time to get back up there. The player, or anyone else who came into the room, would be expecting the title screen in a matter of seconds.
“...I, I think so.” Sonic said.
“...I just hope we can give him a good game to come back to.”
