The clock hits 12:07am when he taps on your window.
Three soft knocks.
One goofy grin.
And a whisper like a secret “C’mon, get your shoes”
You’re already pulling on your hoodie.
Your mum would lose her mind if she knew. Jasper’s not exactly on her approved friends list, too much trouble in those soft brown eyes, too many detentions, too many bruises he never explains. But to you?
He’s just… Jasper. Loud laugh, gentle hands, a heart stitched together with reckless kindness and duct tape.
Your feet hit the grass, still wet from evening rain. He helps you over the fence like he always does, even though you don’t need help, and when you land, your knees knock into his.
“Don’t be” he murmurs back, and he’s already looking at you like you’re made of fireworks and fresh air.
You walk the streets like you own them, sneakers scuffed, hoodies half zipped, your backpacks clinking with two stolen ciders and a pack of gum. The night smells like cut grass and asphalt and freedom. Like maybe the world isn’t ending. Like maybe you don’t have to grow up yet.
You end up under the bleachers behind the high school. The same place you smoked half a joint with him two months ago. The same place he once told you he didn’t believe in soulmates… and then looked at you for just a second too long.
You pop the cider cap with your teeth. He laughs like it’s the coolest thing he’s ever seen.
“So” you say, tapping your bottle to his, “What’s the plan, Jordan?”
“No plan” he shrugs “Just this”
He’s got one knee bent, hoodie sleeves pushed up, eyes on you like you’re the moon. You’re not even wearing makeup. Your hair’s a mess. Your hands are shaking a little from the cold or the nerves or both.
And he still looks at you like you’re everything.
You sip, then lean back on your elbows, the metal bleacher above your head casting shadows across your face. He’s quiet for a moment, then speaks
“Do you ever think about just… getting in a car and driving until there’s nothing but stars?”
You tilt your head, “With you?”
He smiles. Shrugs. “Maybe”
Your heart does this dumb skip thing. Like your body knows something before your brain catches up.
You turn to him, “Hey, Jasper?”
His eyes widen, just a bit. Then soften. And without a word, he leans in.
It’s not perfect. It’s warm and clumsy and honest. His lips taste like green apple and cheap beer. His hand finds your cheek like it’s done it a hundred times before. And when you break apart, he rests his forehead against yours and whisper “I can feel it”
You smile against his lips, “Feel what?”
“This, You. Me. Whatever the hell this is”
You stay like that for a while. Kissing. Laughing. Hiding from headlights. Lying about tomorrow like it won’t ever come. Like this night will last forever if you just pretend hard enough.
And maybe it won’t. Maybe it’ll fade by morning. Maybe you’ll go back to being the girl who sits three rows behind him in chem, and he’ll go back to pretending he’s not completely undone by your smile.
