A Simple Guide to Letting Go of Resentment, Getting Closure and Healing Your Heart

Have you ever had a sense of built up resentment about something or someone from your past?
Maybe itâs a betrayal that still stings, an argument that haunts you, or a loss you canât let go of. These feelings can keep us stuck, making it hard to move forward and live lives we love.
But what if I told you thereâs a way to free yourself from the hurt, and open the door to a brighter, more peaceful future?
Itâs called the power of forgiveness.
Forgiveness doesnât mean you have to forget or condone what happened. Instead, itâs about healing your heart and creating space for love, joy, and abundance.
What Forgiveness Really Means
When we talk about forgiving what you canât forget, itâs important to clarify what forgiveness is â and what it isnât.
Forgiveness doesnât mean forgetting wrongs or pretending they never happened. Itâs not about letting someone âoff the hookâ or allowing them back into your life in the same way. And it certainly doesnât mean condoning abuse or hurtful behavior.
Rather, forgiveness is a choice you make for yourself â a conscious decision to release the unresolved pain playing out over and over in your mind.
To help you understand how forgiveness truly works, imagine this:
Youâve been carrying around a heavy backpack filled with rocks. Each rock represents a hurt, a betrayal, or a disappointment. Carrying this load day after day exhausts you, slowing you down and keeping you from experiencing the full joy of life.
Forgiveness is like taking those rocks out of your backpack.
Forgive, not because they deserve it, but because YOU do.
It doesnât change what happened, but it does change how you feel moving forward. It lightens your load, allowing you to move freely and live fully.
This is what makes forgiveness one of the most impactful practices you can do everyday to improve your life.
Tap Into the Power of Forgiveness to Make Your Life Better
So, why is forgiveness so powerful?
Research shows that practicing forgiveness can have incredible benefits for your health and well-being.
When you forgive, you reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve heart health. You might even sleep better! These are just some of the surprising ways science has discovered that forgiveness can transform your life.
Beyond the physical benefits, it also has a profound impact on your emotional and spiritual well-being. By letting go of stuck, built up resentment, youâre not just freeing yourself from the past â youâre also raising your vibration and opening up space for new, more positive experiences.
Youâre allowing yourself to feel peace, joy, and love again. Youâre choosing to embrace your power to create a life that aligns with your highest purpose and deepest desires.
Forgiveness can transform your relationship with yourself and others, allowing you to quiet your inner critic and shift negative self-talk.
How to Forgive What You Canât Forget
Now, you might be thinking, âThis all sounds great, but how do I actually forgive what I canât forget?â
Itâs normal to feel hesitant or skeptical, especially when the pain is deep or the wound is fresh. But remember, forgiveness is a practice, not a one-time event. Itâs a journey that you take at your own pace.
Hereâs a simple yet powerful forgiveness exercise to help you start:
1. Identify a Person, Event, or Memory
Think of a person, event, or memory from the past that still triggers feelings of resentment or bitterness in you. It could be something big or something small â what matters is how it makes you feel.
2. Create a Peaceful Space
Find a quiet place where you wonât be disturbed. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and think of someone or something in your life right now that brings up feelings of great love and joy. It could be your childâs laughter, a cherished pet, or a beautiful place in nature.
When those feelings of love and joy are at their peak, gently replace that image with a mental picture of the person or event from your past. Notice how your heart feels open and expansive, even when thinking about something that once hurt you.
4. Send Positive Intentions
To the person or event in your mind, silently say:
âMay you be happy and do well. I forgive you for everything that happened in the past. I wish you the best, because thatâs what Iâd wish for myself, and thatâs what I wish for all people.â
Feel the weight of your hurt and anger lifting, replaced by a sense of calm and release.
Take a few deep, calming breaths and open your eyes. Repeat this exercise as often as you like, until you notice the feeling of bitterness decreasing and you are able to let go of resentment.
Itâs perfectly normal to feel resistance at the beginning, or if your positive emotion diminishes when you first bring the image of the person youâre forgiving into your mind. Just keep doing this exercise regularly and little by little, youâll wash away the negative emotions, find closure and feel at peace.
Set Yourself Free in Just 10 Minutes a Day
Remember, forgiveness is not about the other person â itâs about you.
Itâs about choosing to live in peace, no longer allowing the past to control your emotions and your life.
By embracing the triggers hijacking your emotions, you take back your power, allowing yourself to move forward with grace and purpose.
