NYX :

she hadn’t known tatiana the way that june did. she knew her the way the more vast population of the school did, in passing, through a party here and there or an event, a shared class, but tatiana hadn’t been on the fast-pitch team with her the way she’d been on squad with june so when she heard her voice a thought to quit, she didn’t entirely feel like she had the right to have an opinion. if it wasn’t for june asking her, she might have simply stayed silent, but her friend asked and she adjusted the snapback on her head and hiked her boots up to the bench of the bleachers in front of her. “what do you think she’d think? about you quitting?” nyx pulled a little tin case out of her nike drawstring bag sitting at her side and offered her a cigarette, well…there were a few of those and a few hand-rolled and herbal.

“She would tell me I’m an idiot for even considering quitting. That I’m one of the best ones on the team,” June mumbled, taking a cigarette out of the case before placing it between her lips. She got her own lighter out of her pocket, lighting the cigarette before taking a deep drag and exhaling the smoke after a couple of seconds. “Everything is just so gloom. I’m not enjoying it anymore.”

JENNY :

“Oh my god, no. You can’t quit, June,” Jenny insisted, clicking off her phone screen, her Twitter feed now entirely forgotten. Her pleading eyes flicked up to the other girl’s as she reached out to grip both her hands in a fierce grasp. “We’ve already lost one person. We can’t lose two.” Was that insensitive? She didn’t want June to think she only wanted her on the team for the squad’s benefit. She just liked having a friendly face around during practice, perhaps an equally selfish reason. Her face softened, her lips curving into an apologetic smile. “I’m sure if you need more time off, they can arrange that. Have you– Are you okay?”

June’s eyes widened at Jenny’s rather surprising response. Well, she had no idea her presence was liked so much during practice or just in the team in general. Her lips curled up into a small smile, head slowly lowering into a small nod. “I’m okay. The week I spent alone in my dorm sleeping helped, but it almost feels like I’m not allowed to do fun things anymore. It’s my head probably playing tricks on me, I think I need a break.”

MINA :

it was a feeling mina was well acquainted with, the world seeming a little bleak now that tatiana was gone. a lot of the time she felt as if she might still be there, just suddenly showing up at her room, back from a wild spring break she’d have a billion stories about. but she wasn’t, and she’d never be, and that made it hard to get out of bed on some days. “i think she’d want you to keep at it,” she said after giving it some thought, offering june an attempt at a smile. “she loved it, and i think — she would’ve wanted the team to do well.”

“You’re probably right. I can always take a break when I’m not feeling fine or tell coach in the morning that I’m having a rough day. I’m sure she will understand,” June told Mina, having a proper plan to continue with what she loved to do and still do it at her desired speed; one baby step at the time.

ARABELLA :

Arabella listened quietly, no stranger to the company of grief. Though she hadn’t known Tatiana really at all, just the news of the death had brought to light all her own memories of losing those she loved, not one but twice, and the past few months had been difficult. She knew the most important thing was having people to listen, and she hoped she could provide that to as many people as possible or, at least, to those who wanted to talk. She considered the question for quite some time, dark eyes softly surveying the grass shivering in the air before them. Tucking her hair behind one ear, she turned her head to look at June, expression somber but gentle. “I think…if it’s something you enjoy, you should keep doing it. Grief can swallow up all your happiness, make the things you once loved seem tedious and dreadful. But that’s not because you stop loving them, it’s because you’re in a place where it’s difficult to let yourself be happy. Does that make sense?”

June listened carefully to Arabella as she was poking the salad she had made for lunch this morning with her fork. She had no appetite whatsoever, the guilt and grief swallowing her whole and it seemed to consume her more and more each passing day. She felt like she was drowning, falling into an abyss that got deeper as time passed. But Phans weren’t quitters and Arabella was right. “I can always take a break for now,” June stated, looking up at the girl with a tiny smile. “Until I have processed everything correctly. Everything is just so black and white now, I’m not enjoying anything I’m doing.”

Her thumb and index clutching tightly onto an eraser, she aggressively wiped it over the paper of her journal, the list of items they’d need for the cheer party not coming along as well as she’d hoped. The topic always seemed to circle back to Tatiana and Inna wasn’t emotionally equipped to handle that. “I think,” Inna started. “Tati wouldn’t want us to dwell on it. She loved this stuff. The last thing she’d want is our suffering just for the sake of it. We’re alive and should keep living for her sake, right?”

“she would be proud of us if we kept the team going, that’s for sure.” taking the notebook from her friend and teammate, june scribbled a few items onto the paper they might need for the party. “i think you’re right.”

WILLOW :

Despise seeing her every weekend since she had memory– Willow had absolutely no clue on who Tatiana really was, since she never really cared for the girl. Things hadn’t changed not even after her dead, because why would she ven try to pretend she cared? Willow gave a dead look as she finished talking, and even if she hadn’t been asked for an opinion, she still would’ve given it. “Quitting won’t bring her back,” she almost sighed. why did people beat themselves over things they couldn’t control was beyond her. “You do know that, right?”

“i’m well aware,” june would tell the other female. she could hear by the tone of willow’s voice that sharing her thoughts with her was probably her worst idea of the day. june sighed, collecting her books before stuffing them inside her bag. “just forget i even started about this. i didn’t mean to annoy you.”

RORY :

EMPATHETIC HUES GLISTENED AS SHE LISTENED TO HER FRIEND SPEAK, not really sure of what to say. She didn’t know Tatiana that well and she couldn’t even fathom what it’d be like to lose your best friend. Anytime she thought of anything happening to Rhett, well she felt sick to her stomach. A soft smile preyed onto the South African’s lips as she turned to look at June, “I don’t think you need to decide today. Just…maybe think about what had you to join the team in the first place and if it’s something you still enjoy?”

“don’t get me wrong, i still love being a cheerleader,” june started, looking over to the football field where the team was practicing. supporting the boys was something she thoroughly enjoyed and probably always would. cheering was one of the few things that could take her mind off things that bothered her, along with the pressure that was given to her by her parents. “it just doesn’t feel the same without her. almost a little. . . gloom.”

“nothing is the same without her,” she said, swatting a leaf out of scout’s hand when she put it in her mouth. “that’s icky, stop that. spit it out.” scout shook her head, starting to crawl away, but darla grabbed her overall strap to stop her and picked her up, fishing around in the toddler’s mouth before finally managing to get the part of the leaf she managed to bite off out of her mouth. “you can’t eat leaves. it’s gross.” scout grunted, pushing herself away. “down now,” the baby said. “keep stuff out of your mouth, you have a binky for a reason. use it,” darla said as she popped a binky in scout’s mouth and let her back down as she looked at june. “i think… you should do what’s gonna make you feel better. it’s your decision. but, yanno, she’d say the same thing. do what you want. be your own person. and she’d socially destroy anybody that got in your way. if you don’t have the passion for it anymore, then quit if you want to — but you’re an asset to that team, they’ll go downhill real quick.”

june would look at scout being the little rebel she was. it was refreshing to be around a child this young, while the adults were dealing with an absolute nightmare on campus. scout had no worries about tatiana, about anything both june and darla were struggling with. the raven haired girl would fixate her gaze back on her friend once she continued with her advice, gently rubbing her arm as she was thinking about what could possibly be the best decision to make. “what a shit decision to make,” she would mumble, grinning softly at the comment about her being an asset to the team; one of the best cheerleaders. “you think ? coach will beg me to stay.”

“I’m just not so sure anymore, you know,” June stated after a minute of silence. “Maybe I should just quit. It isn’t the same without her.” The raven haired girl would comment, thinking out loud how her future with the cheer squad was going to look like. Tatiana was her best friend and the sudden loss of her hit her harder than she had ever anticipated. After weeks of just staying in her dorm at Audax, hidden away from the world, June slowly started to go back to classes and live life again. But chances had to be made. She had no choice. “What do you think ?”
