i think one of the only consistent motivational frameworks i can slot into is the idea of giving my future self gifts for her to work with than any actual idea that doing anything 'for myself' actually does anything 'for me' unless its immediate

if you use a high silica sand as substrate you will get a lot of diatoms and your glass surface will be orange and hard to see through for a very long time. but the critters inside mostly wont mind that

eventually the diatoms will turn all that silica into diatom skeletons and it'll mostly go away
