Detailed Reasons Why I wouldn't/Would Survive Darkwood
For me, it's 3:05am. I have to get up for work at 3:30am. I went to sleep at 1am.
With this, I decided to compile a list of why I would not survive my current fixation horror game.
Wouldn't:
Reason 1) I have severe arthritis in both hands
For the first 5-6 days I would be fine. After this, carrying a shovel would be like trying to carry a house
Reason 2) I have a fear of bugs
I would see the bugs on the ground, scream, and draw every entity my way to my hideout
Reason 3) (we're getting a little more in game now) I would literally die for the musician
He would be crying, and I would leave my hideout at night just to comfort him, thus being consumed by the floor gore.
Reason 4) Wolfman
He would be speaking with me and my mind would see this:
I would begin laughing for zero reason, and he would be so angry/offended that he just immediately decides to turn me into a chew toy
5) Jungle madness
My family and friends decided long ago I would be the first to get jungle madness. After roughly 2 weeks I would be running about the woods like this
6) The Doctor
I would feel so bad for the doctor that I would obsessively begin compiling his past into my brain, trying to figure out the lore and reasons why to his madness— thus forgetting to escape
7) The Trader
He is so friendly that I would just stay with him to be really honest
8) The Wedding
I am dumb enough to attend and then if I survived I would be dumb enough to throw the invite at Wolfman for not warning me
Would:
I am already a cryptid. I basically eat nothing, run on 2 hours sleep a day and thrive
I have zero relationships to return to, so the forest had literally nothing to call to me with
I'm funny IDK *🥺* maybe characters would take pity on me ...
I'd be like Piotrek and stay in my hideout obsessively doing something else
Isolation doesn't bother me. I've been alone for a very long time and have no issues with it.
When you first reach the swamp hideout, and the radio suddenly says "come back to us" and the stranger replies "soon. I'm close" or whatever he says ..who do we think was speaking?
I feel like it's perhaps his team that were unfortunately killed by savages?
Or— what if it was the being/the Trader trying to bring us back to the previous location??
I love the tune that plays when you investigate the hunters house in Darkwood.
It's eerie, but most of all it's stark, and there's something so... I don't know.
When you find the body and the missing head on the trophy, I cannot help but imagine the "hunter" was a good man— once.
A man that was trying to help his village by getting rid of the infected dogs when it all first began, perhaps?
I imagine him looking at the photograph found in his home, shuddering at both the fact such a beast once existed and secondly such a creature was killed BY HIM.
The song that plays makes me feel sickening pride, perhaps what he felt when killing that mongrel in the photo, but clearly it also suggests that (as we know) there was much worse to come...
And then finding the body.
His pride let him down and the forest consumed him regardless.
Dear Darkwood fandom residents, I want to scare you with the news of a second translated fanfic, aka "that monolith of 70,000 words"
(unfortunately, I don't have the time or energy to create a good announcement image, so here's a mini-stranger and an even smaller trader for moral support)
🍄Link to the translated fanfic🍄
Unfortunately, because chapter 4 is finally coming into development and I couldn't abandon the project, I decided to translate the fanfic into English. My knowledge of English isn't perfect, and after rereading it, I found a couple of logical errors that have been corrected. But if you find any, please let me know and I'll fix them.
In short, this is my attempt at a fanfic based on a couple of ideas and dreams, which would ultimately lead to a happy ending, if not for everyone, then for many of the characters. Only three chapters are ready so far, but plans for the remaining seven plus a game-style epilogue are already in place (they've been there for at least two years now)
In general, it all started with the idea of "what if the Trader just got tired of explaining everything in small print and finally did something interesting?"
And yes, there are plenty of little references, like how I named the Musician after the book his character is apparently based on. The music from Chapter 1 is the same music that played in one of Darkwood's release trailers, and it really captures the game's vibe. There are also jokes about how mushrooms help other plants grow, which is why Trader will be hanging out in the garden at the end, and so on and so forth.
Well, one day I'll convince my friend to post all the sketches and art made about Darkwood on Tumblr so you too can see the parade of memes that was created during a whole year of active Darkwood propaganda.
New Darkwood posts are popping up like mushrooms after rain today. The next poor guy to fall victim to my search for deep meaning syndrome is a WOLFMAN.
Firstly, I don't believe he's a wolf at all. His face isn't wolf-like, not even wolf-like. Secondly, he's lying. Near the body of the hunter who was his prototype, there's an empty board from a stuffed head. If you strangle him and complete the quest with the dream in the church, and then on top of that, go to the church basement itself, you can get a box with drawings. And there's a story there about two girls whose dog ate mushrooms, mutated, bit their father, and then called the Hunter, who took him as a trophy. Since our Wolfman is most likely hanging around this box because of the smell, he clearly knows these people, and perhaps it's the canine part that recognizes the smell and is so actively trying to open the box. So yes, I believe he's a dog and not a wolf.
About the connection with the Doctor, the Chicken Lady, and the rest of the gang. First, it's worth noting that Pretty Lady, aka Chicken Lady's mutated sister, has a simple silver ring, and the Hunter is wearing a similar one. Nowhere else has such rings, anywhere at all. Except for our Wolfman, who have a copy, a rough and crooked copy created by the forest. The connection is already quite clear, considering that Wolfman also boasts of his hunting habits and loves to make stuffed animals. So, I have a theory of the century. What if, technically, when the disease was spreading, the Hunter was already living with Pretty Lady, but perhaps from eating the meat of sick animal, or simply becoming infected like everyone else, Pretty Lady began to mutate,Chicken Lady and her brother tried to take her for themselves, and the incident resulted in the Hunter being shot. The Chicken Lady's brother is the character who has a military dog tag in his house (previously) it dropped from the character in the prologue. So it's logical to assume he knows how to handle a weapon. How does the Doctor fit into this scheme? Well, he treated the Chicken Lady's sister, and he used to live not too far from the hunter's house, and the Wolfman also knows about the key and about the strained relationship between the Doctor and the villagers. So I'm sure it was he who warned the Doctor that a crowd of angry villagers was coming for him, looking for the Chicken Lady's brother, and he went before the Doctor to figure out why his sister was still ill.
Well, the finale. Like, I'm still holding onto the theory that Pretty Lady was Hunter's wife/fiancée, aka Wolfman in the future. And well, because of this, even though he's no longer fully himself, Wolfman is still trying to somehow get to the one he clearly loved. And either because he's more of a wolf (dog?) now, or for some other reason, like "a flood of emotions came over him and he interpreted them exactly this way," after which he ate his beloved and, well, that's the end. He fed his dogs, ate himself, and maybe didn't even fully understand what he'd done. Overall, it's possible this is also a consequence of the mutation and the subsequent estrangement from people and the villagers. It's no wonder he often addresses the main character, saying that people don't like creatures like him and are generally weak and shitty, etc. In reality, even though he's a hunter, he easily preys on a sick, run-down villager, while a random guy in a hat with a table leg is already a threat. In short, Wolfman is a layered character, and without even realizing it, beneath all the layers of aggression, humor, and so on, he harbors a clearly serious problembthe very lack of any capacity for a human or normal life, even though his lair is decorated in a very human-like manner, like a hunter's, not like a dog or a wolf's.
And yes, Wolfman clearly favors a more careful and quiet approach to survival, despite his communication style. After the dream with the Church, when he comes to the main character, his dialogue changes significantly depending on the outcome. If they escaped, great; if they died in the dream, he'll laugh at their weakness; and, well, if they won, he'll be dissatisfied, saying there's a lack of respect for the forest and all that. Perhaps this is fear after meeting someone more capable, or simply an attempt to rationalize everything into a council, so they'll get out of his forest as quickly as possible.
Well, perhaps this harshness is just a cliche, but the calmness (which could itself be interpreted as weakness?) in the Hunter's actions led to the result we see here. Perhaps it was a retaliatory threat to the Chicken Lady's brother, but in reality, he wouldn't be capable of killing a human being. Or maybe it's all just a theory?
