I'm a social scientist and I talk about my disciplines a lot. My areas are linguistics, sociology (I'm a postmodernist and I'm a big fan of Baudrillard and Goffman especially), anthropology, and I'm casually interested in basically the sciences behind what causes the human body to go wrong (abnormal psych, immunology, communicable diseases) But this also means I have a lot of nuanced takes on social issues and I refuse to debate bullshit.

I also like avatar the last Airbender (the novels, comics, and tlok as well! I’m pro-NATLA as well pls keep it positive here), deltarune, jfashion, strategy games, horror and macabre art and aesthetics, absurdist humor, I like posting about recovering from mental illness and improving your life with a disability too!

God dammit I wish I had an air conditioner. I wish I had a job so I could earn enough money to buy us an air conditioner. I wish I didn’t get fired illegally after getting tricked into thinking I was going to have a guaranteed 40/hr week job with benefits and it was a job I’m GOOD AT I was a fast food manager and it’s not glamorous but god dammit I was good at it and I lost my health insurance which has led me to paying high out of pocket costs for my medications that I CANT go without or I’m miserable and can’t do anything. I was planning to do commissions this summer but I can’t think let alone draw in this fucking heat. I escaped the newest addition to Erin in the Morning’s “do not travel” list back in January by chance. I just was so lucky to meet someone so amazing that lived in a place that I really love being. But I’ve lost a lot of the support I have, I don’t even have all of my belongings like for Christs sake I miss my cats. I miss them so much I’ve tried not to think about them because I just know I’d cry but Jesus I miss my cats I want my belongings back I want my car running again I want a phone that isn’t broken like holy fuck I’m just so distraught I don’t normally post about my life but holy fucking shit I’m so beyond stressed out.

"We won't teach this at school because parents are supposed to address it at home." Anything that puts all of the child's power onto the parents' hand, anything that assumes parents are going to inherently do enough of a good job no one else needs to interfer, every single one of these IS going to be used by controlling, neglectful or unprepared parents and already are, and if the system did not account for that very real, tangible, dangerous tendency, then it's not worth fucking anything. a lot of people assume psychosis hallucinations are super intense all-consuming horror movie shit like the memes about the hat man or always horrible debilitating things that make you dangerous to be around

but in my experience 95% of my hallucinations are getting spooked by very clearly hearing someone knocking on my door or calling my name from another room or hearing footsteps walking behind me which are "just" my brain recreating the horror of an abusive childhood

i *have* gotten the "bugs crawling all over me" hallucination once or twice though and yeah that one is exactly as terrible horrible as it sounds AUGH

media and pop culture hypes up psychosis a lot as The Worst That Can Happen out of sanism, so even when you try and filter that cultural bias out you still assume it's based on something

when, no, psychosis is actually very simple: it's just hyperactive pattern matching. it's your brain's signal-to-noise ratio being off balance, it's seeing images in random static. it's not always this special uniquely big thing, it's in fact quite mundane a lot of the time.

no one is immune to psychosis, it's not purely the realm of the insane. anyone is one bad night of sleep or one bad case of food poisoning or one bad fever away from being just like me on my worst days.

and this, indeed, is why solidarity with the insane is so important: you, yes you too, are just one bad day from joining us, and no perceptions of being a "temporarily embarrassed sane person" will save you from the oppression of the psychiatric institution.

I hate the push that you can quit addictions by pure willpower because it perpetuates the idea that people who can't have committed a moral failing of some kind. We all may know some people who did quit an addiction cold turkey, and with no aid, you may be one of them. And that's fantastic, but it is not the norm. It is more than okay to need help to quit an addiction. Relapse is also part of the process. Many people relapse several times before they are able to quit for good. Let's have compassion.

ALCOHOL. It’s a very common dependence and cold turkey CAN KILL YOU. A lot of people don’t know this. Doctors can literally prescribe beer in the ER to save a life.
