drowning on dry land | juniper and sophia
Sophia wasn’t sure just how long Alexander had kept her alone for, but her throat felt raw and dry, her mouth parched and aching for the salty seawater that she hadn’t so much as tasted for weeks. With each day that went by, she could feel herself growing weaker and weaker, and the events of last night hadn’t helped in the slightest. Captain Barrett had left her bruised, battered, and bloodied, and it was almost as if he was purposely leaving her alone for so long just so that he could force her to revel in the helplessness of the situation he had forcefully put her in. She couldn’t help but worry about the wounds on her inner thighs…they were easily the worst out of them all, and without proper medical attention, she feared that they would become infected—after all, it wasn’t as if a pirate ship was the cleanest and most hygienic place to be held prisoner, and without her ability to heal herself, Sophia knew that she needed to be allowed to be allowed to tend to the bloodied welts that had been left upon the creamy skin of her inner thighs, and soon, before it was too late for her to do so. She hated feeling so dependent upon Alexander, and she could only assume that he knew that she was waiting for him to return, just so that she could beg and plead to be unshackled and given permission to disappear into the bathroom where she would bathe herself until she had thoroughly rinsed away the sensation of him from her skin.
However, he still didn’t return, and Sophia grew more and more fretful with each moment that passed. She whimpered softly as she attempted to struggle against her confines, but even the slightest of movements caused her wounds to cry out in protest, and she quickly realized that she wouldn’t be going anywhere until Alexander gave her permission to do so. Neptune, she…she hated feeling as if her life was tied to his—he determined whether she lived or died, and with each day she spent aboard his ship, Sophia’s suspicions that he planned on murdering and butchering her only strengthened until she was certain that he had every intention of killing her. Last night, that had been what had terrified her the most—that he had been so overwhelmed with rage that, in his attempt to punish her, he would end up going too far and slitting her throat as he had threatened to do so many times in the past. He was dangerously unpredictable, and that was merely one of the many reasons that being left tied up to his bed with welts and bruises left all over her body filled Sophia with nothing but immeasurable fear and dread.
Coming from outside of Alexander’s quarters, Sophia could hear what sounded like…some kind of commotion. Her eyes widened immediately, and her body reacted instinctively just in case it was her captor; her shoulders stiffened and her heart began to race within the confines of her chest at the thought of Lord Barrett returning to her. She knew that things between them would be worse than usual, and she wasn’t sure if he was finished teaching her a lesson just yet. He had told her that there would be no more whipping, but that had been the night before…everything could have been different come morning. Her trembling hands curled into themselves reflexively, and she did her best to make herself as small as possible on the bed that she had been chained to. If that was him, she would make it very clear that she had no intention of fighting him today…all that she wanted was to be unshackled and given the chance to tend to her wounds, and if that meant having to plead for the opportunity to do so, then…so be it.
With that in mind, Sophia swallowed past the heavy lump in her throat, and…she waited.
She was on a ship that had seen the stain of mer blood. She could smell the old blood that had soaked into the wooden planks. Juniper wasn’t sure if it was nearness to the sea or her kinship with Bastian that made it possible for her to smell the bitter tang of fear and pain upon this ship, but it was at the back of her throat like bile, like an itch under the skin. In response, she gripped the pirate tighter, nipped at his skin just a little harder as she committed what was important into her memory. Even as he fucked into her harder, no doubt thinking she was encouraging him in the way her legs tightened around his waist.
This ship is named the Renegade.
“Fuck, you’re tight.”
“You’re a big man.”
If his face wasn’t buried in the skin above her breast, sucking bruises into the tender skin, he would have seen the way Juniper rolled her eyes in disgust. His was an easy ego to stroke.
The Captain isn’t here. Juniper recognized a captain’s cabin when she saw one, and the fact that no one came storming out of it despite what his crew member was doing on deck was very telling. There was a man who had been posted outside the cabin door, but at the sight of his crew member and a prostitute, he rolled his eyes and grumbled about going to a pub to get his own cunt to use.
The pirate slammed Juniper against one of the cabin walls in his frenzy, snapping her rudely out of her thoughts, and Juniper clawed at his back through his clothes in response, gritting her teeth in pain. That hurt. Enough was enough. She took his face in her hands and drew him into a crushing kiss. She knew he was close, as the slam of his hips were faltering in rhythm. With just a hint of a malicious though, she reached out her magic to the water and just before he drew away from the kiss, cracked him in the back of the head with a hard stream of salt water straight from the sea itself. He crumpled to the deck, out like a light.
Breathing hard, Juniper drew her skirt back down and dragged the unconscious pirate close to the Captain’s cabin, leaning him against the wall and near the door. Captains kept liquor in their cabin often enough. Juniper was going to go inside, grab a bottle, pour a little on the man and place the bottle in his hand, and then go about her exploration of the ship. She gave the man’s leg an irate kick just before she opened the cabin door.
What she saw inside made her freeze in shock, eyes wide.
“Princess.”
Standing in front of the noblewoman as she remained seated, Tatiana listened attentively as she continued to express her worries, fears, and opinions. There was wisdom, deep and unending, within her sorrowful eyes, but something akin to vulnerability as well…she seemed so terrible sad, and Tatiana wasn’t sure if a few of her sweetest pastries would be enough to remedy that. “There is little bit of good in everyone, I am thinking,” she said tentatively, wringing her small hands together in her apron as she chose her words carefully in an attempt to avoid mangling them. “Doing bad things does not automatically make someone bad person…sometimes they are still good at heart too. Is—is rather confusing, no?” she questioned thoughtfully, tugging her bottom lip between her teeth and worrying upon the rosy flesh as she mulled over her words.
"Maybe tell him that you are loving him too much to see him get hurt. Tell him that…tell him that is only because you are caring so much that you want him to take care of himself and not get into trouble. He will understand, I am thinking," Tatiana continued with a firm nod, and she reached out to gently pat the woman’s shoulder, offering her a reassuring smile and brightening when she asked what it was that she recommended from the bakery. "I will surprise you, yes? And it will be free of charge!"
With that being said, Tatiana was scampering off into the kitchens, and it was after a handful of moments that she returned with a tray filled to the brim with strawberries that had been double-dipped in melted chocolate before being rolled in chopped nuts and bits of hardened caramel. Served along side them was a glass of fresh and ice-cold milk, as well as a buttery croissant with a bit of jam and clotted cream to accompany it. Beaming, she set the tray before the elder woman, and she clasped her hands together excitedly and urged her to dig in.
"There!" she chirped. "Is good, yes? You will feel better in no time at all, miss pretty lady, and I will give you extras to bring home for your brother, too."
“It does make one wonder,” Juniper played idly with her napkin, twisting it into spirals, “about which matters more; what is in our hearts or what it is that we do?”
At Tatiana’s answer, Juniper nodded her agreement with the other woman’s words. There were some things that went unspoken and understood between the two siblings. Caring for each other’s safety was one. But Bastian did not always see the danger that loomed ahead; too enchanted by the patterns of the shadows and light in the water that surrounded him. He was by no means a stupid man, but he could be reckless and relentless to the point of danger.
“I do not know if it will be enough to hold him back, but you give good advice. We all need to hear from our loved ones that they love us, even if it is something known.”
At the girl’s chipper mention of bringing out food free of charge, Juniper’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You really dont have to do that--” it was too late. The nice girl had already bustled into the kitchen to get whatever delight she no doubt had in mind. Juniper let out a small sigh and shook her head fondly. The baker’s daughter was incredibly sweet. While she was out, Juniper took out her purse and pulled out five gold coins, slipping them under a plate on her table. As generous as the family was known to be, it wasn’t in Juniper to let such kindness go unpaid. She and Bastian had longed for generosity in when they were growing youths, and now that Juniper had the power to grant it, she did so readily.
Juniper’s eyes lit up with delight at the sight of the chocolate covered strawberries and the croissant.
“This is wonderful! Thank you!”
She gave Tatiana a wide smile and hummed appreciatively as she took a bite of one of the strawberries.
If only I don't bend and break I'll meet you on the other side I'll meet you in the light If only I don't suffocate I'll meet you in the morning when you wake
That’s definitely one way to look at it; I’ll try to keep that comment about flattery in mind. Tragedy does seem the likely outlook, but I try to keep on a more…optimistic side of things. I truly believe we can get out of this rut the pirates have forced us into; and with as few casualties and losses as possible.
“I will do my best to follow your example and have faith in our people.”
“I hope the merpeople find her, and I hope they’ll trust our people enough to let us help. How...how has the merprince handled this?”
Kai gave her a strange look when she warned him. “What should I be prepared to expect?” It was a fair question to ask, considering what he must have been walking into.
“He might not respond to you. And possibly, if he does respond, it might be with magic.”
Gwen followed slightly behind the other woman, looking curiously around at the new sights. They were headed to a part of the kingdom with which Gwen wasn’t terribly familiar. She went to the edges periodically to gather certain plants necessary for her craft, but never to this particular corner.
"I’ve seen plenty of… unusual characters in my travels and business, I’m sure he won’t be the strangest I’ve ever dealt with."
She watched in awe as colourful cuttlefish swam towards them, but forced a smile when she heard the woman laughing. Gwen noticed one sort of hanging back — waves of anxiety and shyness rolled off of it and towards her. There was an undercurrent of longing to which she could relate all too well. Slowly, with her hand extended to show her intent, she swam towards it, gently touching the… head, if you will.
Juniper smiled fondly as Gwen carefully greeted on of the shyer cuttlefish. There was a comfort in the way the others flashed their colors excitedly, grasping at Juniper’s hands and arms in greeting. While she didn’t know these particular cuttlefish as well as she had known their parents, they still recognized her as one of their caretakers.
Juniper saw the shy little cuttlefish let of a rapid fire series of colors as Gwen gave her attention.
“She likes you. I can tell.”
The cuttlefish soon released her from their little hugs, and Juniper pointed to the wreck she had grown up in. There were strings of sea glass hanging down from one of the holes in the side of the vessel, and there was a large amphora where Calum, Bastian’s octopus, liked to nap.
“Bast!” Juniper called, “Bast! I’ve brought a guest.”
From inside the ship, Juniper heard a series of slamming and crashing as (no doubt) Bastian was making his way outside too quickly.

Play your cards right | Crowe & Starling
"Nothing wrong with that," He replied with a smile, lips curling a bit wider as she kissed his temple. It didn’t take her too long before she was back talking to the bartender and it left Crowe wondering how exactly they had gotten here. The whole course of events was a little sketchy to him; he wasn’t the type to plan, and as such he didn’t really think through the vast majority of his actions. He’d seen a pretty woman in desperate need of someone to save her, he had, they’d walked, now they were about to drink. No, correction—he was about to drink, and a lot. Not that he had a problem with it. There was a promise of money and free alcohol and he wouldn’t say no to a deal like htat.
Especially not with this woman half in his lap already and what he thought to be promise of more from her, too. He’d take that bet without a second though, and did with a smile and a nod. “Sure. Let’s do that. Who is this fist guy?” He glanced around the bar, not sure if the man in question would be the biggest around or if he was named such for other reasons. Didn’t much bother him; he had full confidence in himself in all situations, this one included.
Until the man was pointed out, he looked back to the woman that had moved close to him and his arm around her tightened a little to bring her closer. “This normal for you, Starling?” He questioned, letting his voice drawl out slowly as his eyes looked her over in equal pace. “Seducing men in the street and getting them drunk? Not that I’m complaining.”
She leaned into him, pressing her body against his and resting her head in the crook of his neck. She could smell the salt of his sweat, but also the familiar hints of the sea. A sailor of some sort. Maybe even a pirate.
“Not really. Today’s been a bit of an unusual day. I usually prefer my men sober. They last longer. Somehow,” she pulled away a bit and winked, “I have faith that it won’t be too much of a problem for you.”
Before she could say anything more, George returned with Louis the Fist. The Fist was a muscular man of average height, with hands blackened from working in a smithy. He was sizing up Juniper’s companion with a keen eye, and for that she gave him a cheerful wave and a charming smile. He didn’t meet her eye, although she saw a subtle twitch of his mouth towards a smile. She had the sneaking suspicion that he had also been one of the many who had made the mistake of betting on Bastian.
George returned to his place behind the bar and proceeded to line up a series of shot glasses.
“The game is simple. You will each match each other shot for shot, and the man who holds his liquor is winner.”
Without further ado, he poured out a shots of rye whiskey, bourbon, scotch, rum, and vodka.
Juniper honestly had no idea which man would win in this. But it was going to be interesting to see. That much was certain.
The Morning After || Kael & Juniper
Now this was the sort of morning wake-up call that Kael preferred. The courtesan’s hands certainly were as eager as she had promised, smoothing away the tense knots of muscle from the previous night’s activities. He hadn’t even realized how sore he had been until her cool fingers massaged the stress away. The nobleman sighed, content.
Although, not everything was so loose and limber under her touch. A pleasurable shiver ran down his spine as her sultry voice tempted a myriad of vulgar thoughts to drift into his mind.
Starling, without a doubt, lived up to her reputation as a high-end professional. The identity of his one-night stand was completely forgotten as petal-soft lips explored his broad back. It became a challenge to stay as still as he did, with a seductive minx hovering above him within arm’s reach. Yet he refrained from turning around, with the hopes that good things would come with a little patience.
And Starling was definitely going to be a good thing.
"Above me, below me, whatever strikes your fancy, my lady." Kael drawled, his voice growing husky as the courtesan continued to test his restraint.
As her lips began to do more work on his body than her hands, the nobleman decided that he had waited long enough. He shifted beneath her, turning around with a wicked gleam in his eye. His fingers ran along her stocking-covered thigh, the very picture of a predator deciding how best to enjoy the meal in front of him. “I suppose these can stay.” He mused aloud, pulling himself up into a sitting position as his hands wandered upwards along her body.
Each touch was calculated, heated but light as his fingers found the lacing of her corset. “But this will have to go.” With the deftness that only came from undoing dozens of the same sort of garment, the taut strings came undone and allowed Kael to look upon his prize unhindered. And what a delectable sight she was as well; his mouth practically watered at the sight.
"Miss Starling, I’m tempted to say we should explore these options of mine, should we not?"
She sat back, resting her weight on the balls of her feet as the corset was left in Kael’s hands, and she was left in just her stocking and knickers. She let him get a good long appreciative look, demurely letting her gaze drop down and away, as if she was someone who had accidentally bumped into him in the street as opposed to a nearly naked courtesan perched above his cock.
Grinning, she leaned down, pressing her breasts to his chest, ghosting her lips over his own.
“Will you be my explore me like a new land, my lord?”
She kissed him, nipping at his lip, before moving down his torso and away from his hands, kissing at the toned flesh above his ever hardening erection. With a gentle and practiced hand, she undid the ties of his trousers and pulled off his pants.
“Now you’re dressed for the part, too.”
Her hands were still slick and smooth with the oil, and she used that to her advantage as she stroked, giving the head an innocent kiss before crawling back up to press kisses into Kael’s shoulder and nip at his jaw. Her hand continued stroking as she whispered in his ear,
“Lead the way, oh great explorer.”
"Nothing more important at the moment," Kai was quick to assure her. Besides, nothing tugged at his heartstrings like a damsel in distress.
"How long has he been missing?" It wasn’t a far fetched idea to consider that the merman she was looking for could have been in real danger, especially if he’d gone towards the surface recently.
“He can’t have been gone more than five hours. I stopped by our home, and he had been there recently.”
The night before, she had woken with a start, bolting out of the arms of the lady whose bed she been hired to grace. There was the storm, and Juniper knew her brother’s work. She could feel the anger and the controlled rage, and she knew that she needed to find him quickly, pull him back from the chasm he chose to dive into.
Calum had been home, but there were bones as well. Chilling trophies of just what Bastian had done.
“He..he might not be himself. I have to warn you. He’s in no danger with the sharks, but he--he gets unpredictable.”
