Hi there, I don't know if you're still active on tumblr these days but I am a big DBD fan. I actually live in Vancouver and I'm putting together a list of filming locations to visit. A lot of the fandom lives in other parts of the world and I thought it would be fun for everyone to see some bts photos of the sets (and thank you for all the photos you have previously posted fr fr).

I recently asked George and Jayden via cameo (uploaded on my tumblr) and they were able to share some locations, but I wondered if you would be willing to add any? I've figured out quite a few but some are so tricky... Anyways I would love some input but no pressure. Have a lovely day!

Hi! I have no idea how long ago you sent this so I'm sorry if it's really late. I'm not active on Tumblr generally - sorry about that! Filming locations I can absolutely help with! Here's a few I can remember / poignant ones: - The Cat King's lair was Steveston Cannery - Martini Acres was the woods we used for the shrine, for when they go looking for Monty's imaginary friend, for the mirrors, for Esther and TeethFace - Orpheum Theatre was our Limbo Hotel Lobby - Autostrada Bakery was the set for Gluttony - The store for the Tongue & Tail Butcher Shop is on Cambie Street - Vancouver Art Gallery was our upscale cafe, London gallery space and boutique store from the Crystal centric episode - Shirley Lighthouse in Sooke was our Lighthouse - Point Grey Secondary School was the high school - Whytecliff Park was the beach with the sea glass, the gift shop and part of the Lighthouse work. Those are the ones that come to mind at the moment! And that's very sweet about the crew shout outs!

Given that you said you’d known for a long time about DBD and the cast (George, Jayden ect) didn’t know up until the last two weeks before, do you think there are plans on moving the show somewhere else in the future which would change out external crew like you so that is why they released you earlier?

I didn’t say I’d known for a long time, just that the announcement wasn’t new information 😊. I don’t know and can’t speak to who found out when / how.

From one season to another there is never a guarantee that crew will be asked back and there are a number of reasons why they may not be. I had been asked if season 2 were greenlit if I’d come back (as had others) but sadly that’s not the case.

I hope the show goes on somehow and finds a home elsewhere but I’m afraid beyond appreciation for the show and hope for the creatives I don’t have any more info than anyone else.

Hi there! I can absolutely answer that for sure - happy to. I will say getting a foot in the door varies greatly with where you are hoping to work. I'm from England originally and worked on movies in England but it wasn't as easy to get on set as it has been comparably here in Canada. England, for example, doesn't have unions in a lot of departments and so there are no production lists available online to find contacts. I did join a great diary program with the Calltime Company that helped me get my foot in the door and the two people that run it Tamana and Vicky were awesome and very helpful. They worked as essentially a booking system where they would email me with opportunities and I would go for them or call me for last minute openings.

In Canada, ADs are with the Directors Guild of Canada and each province is slightly different but the production lists are available online along with the names you need to know to reach out and enquire about work. In all instances I recommend starting out (and you would likely have to unless you already have connections) as a set PA. It's how I got my start and gives you ample opportunity to learn the ropes, get to know each department and what they do and get a better understanding of set etiquette, the major players and how everything works. Set PAs are where I hire most of my trainee assistant directors, in fact. I look for people that show initiative, know when to get out of the way but are there to lend a hand when needed. A lot of what you need as a production assistant is spatial awareness, initiative, common sense (wild, I know) and availability. Having a car is paramount. PAs are the place to learn the ropes, from there you learn about and work with people from other departments so you get a feel for what you want to explore. Department heads are always looking for hard workers who are eager to learn in the field, you just need to get yourself on set with them so they can see you shine! The industry can be and feel very intimidating. It's still very much a man's world and stuck it's old ways in a lot of senses. That said, it's also an incredible world of opportunity where truly no two days are the same and whilst it's absolutely not for everyone I can't imagine doing anything else. My advice to you to get your foot in the door is dependent on the industry where you're looking but aim to get in as a PA first - it's entry level and a chance to learn the ropes - build from there and before you know it if you work hard and get stuck in you'll be well on your way. I love to hear more about daily life behind the scenes but one thing I'm particularly interested in is how many people there seem to be on set all the time. Like A LOT of people, while the actors have to somehow pretend they are alone in these often intimate or intense moments. How often does this get taken into consideration? I know a spicy sex scene will have a "closed set" but do you ever thin out the crew just to be considerate to what the actors are doing? Or is all just another day at work for everyone most of the time?

That’s a good point! So on a tv show the crew can range from around 80 people (for insert units, second units, stunt units or smaller budgets) to around 180 on set on the top end.

That said, when a scene is actually being filmed the numbers actually on set depend on necessity, the size of set and the needs of the scene. Closed sets for intimacy scenes are the strictest - I always check in with my cast along with the intimacy coordinator as to who they want on set with them or close by for support (naturally those scenes are very vulnerable). As a female AD in what is still very much a majority male setting, I have often been asked to be close by for female actresses, for example, for support. Closed sets can be as small as literally the camera operator and all the monitors besides the directors and directors of photography get covered or turned off.

In addition to closed sets for intimacy purposes if the scene is emotional or heavy my boss and I have the same approach as ADs when we’re running the floor in that we’ll tell crew to go away if they’re not needed 😂. We check in with cast to see what they need as much as possible to be able to do what they need to do.

So I guess in a very long answer to your question - yes we absolutely do. If a scene is particularly heavy emotionally, or a pivotal moment for cast, if it’s stunt heavy, if we have a lot of practical effects (especially any flames on set or explosions) - we thin out the crew for a whole number of reasons be it consideration, safety or just because they’re being loud 😂

Ooh I have to be careful with Snowpiercer as the last season hasn’t aired yet (even though we finished it two years ago!)

I was lucky enough to work in every AD position on this show - it was my first tv show in Canada and I worked on the first and last seasons.

Favourite memories would be the wig wall (pictured) from the first season, getting the whole cast and crew together to watch the first trailer which was awesome, decorating the trailers for Halloween, going back to the show and having almost all the same cast and crew which was really special. Season one was really tough - it’s a very ambitious show and so we were all a little broken and exhausted at the end but we were a real family too. One Train isn’t just a phrase in the show it’s how we cheered each other on and celebrated our successes and wraps on set.

I went from a relatively green AD on a work permit to 1st ADing units and a dual citizen over the course of that show and it (and everyone involved) will always be very special to me.

BTS Supernatural

Figured I may as well share these too in case anyone was interested! Again didn't take many photos but love having these mementos from my time on the show <3

I was in one crew photo from the show but I got imposter syndrome and hid behind someone which I'll always kick myself for, especially because it was an awesome day. I did make it into the finale crew shot though (after a stern talking to by a few folks XD) and I'll treasure that forever.

No matter what happens next, this show is amazing from top to bottom and the season we have is outstanding. Nothing can take that away from you ❤️

I actually don’t think anyone did play any of the board games - we had a lot of fun with various props and set pieces in Niko’s room though.

Whenever I finish a show I always look at it like it’s one and done just in case we don’t get to do it again - as an AD we often go from show to show so it doesn’t always time out to come back. So I always make the most of it while we have it and hope we get to do more!
