this entire article is insane for many reasons (the lack of input from trans people is one really big point!) but seeing a fanfic author nakedly admit that she's just cashing in on something that you're not supposed to cash in on (a chance for readers to "give back" lololol) is certainly special

And to be super clear! I think that as this Dramione trend developed, the initial thought was that it would be similar to what we've seen with Twilight and Reylo in the past—really remade fics where we can argue some things, but they don't have much to do with their original works... at all. And they don't explicitly evoke the ship, so much as they wink through art or whatever. At that point, I wasn't really sure where I stood, I was willing to hear the arguments that the IP is separate, whatever. Wasn't planning on reading the books, but I could see where it was murky on the surface.

But then:

A) the majority of trans critics made their opinions clear re: how harmful this is, which is most important

B) literal marketing content both from the authors and the publishers (like this article!) made the connections SO. FUCKING. CLEAR. with blatant disregard for what the original author has done

So yeah I think this trend is pretty disgusting, it's not murky or debatable, and it is incredibly harmful! Most crucially to the communities JKR has hurt—but also to the very concept of fic.
