rumbling bass and the smell of cheap liquor waft into the alley behind her as the door opens to cool evening air. it’s a welcome contrast from the musty club, a reprieve from a sea of sweating bodies lost in the music and the moment. grateful for the solitude, sidney leans against the wall across from the door, her foot propping itself up behind her as she fishes the pack of smokes out of the pocket of her leather jacket. pulling a cigarette from the box, she holds it to her lips as her free hand searches for the lighter she was certain was there earlier. “…aw, fuck.” it most certainly wasn’t there now. tucking the box away, she casts a sidelong glance down the alley to the group standing out on the sidewalk. quiet moment over. with a huff, she pushes herself away from the wall to approach the small crowd, her eyes landing on the tallest, meanest looking son of a bitch standing among them. “hey, big ugly. got a light?”

               freeing themselves from the confines of the dingy club, jimmy and the rest of the boys found themselves packed like rats in the alleyway. one of them had already puked along side a garbage can and the curdled smell alone forced them to move further down the alley. it was another night of not getting paid for a set gone awry. they were lucky enough not to get banned from the club, entirely. he’d snorted a few lines before the set, drifted off into a daze and before he knew it, there was an all out brawl breaking in front of him on stage. he still wasn’t sure how he’d gotten from the back of the club to the stage. nonetheless, one of the boys got tackled by a club goer and jimmy was throwing his mic stand into the crowd in his defense. now they stood there, voices mumbling indistinctly amongst themselves–- until a voice off behind them broke up their little huddle. his features were hard, but soften upon seeing it was only a woman calling him ugly. ❝ sure, ❞ a lighter is drawn from his pocket, the flame flickering to life with a quick roll of his thumb. ❝ i saw you inside. you enjoy the festivities, sweetheart ? ❞

                     She had probably looked better, she knew. As she opened the door, her eyes scanned the mostly empty place. Good, empty was good. Despite the pounding headache, a smile was on her lips as she walked up to order a cup of tea. The money she was paying with was not her own and the thought made her grin. It had definitely been a good night with a great income. As she walked out, she stumbled some nearly spilling her tea all over the street. Not really sure what had made her trip, it could just as well had been the step down, she let out a sigh rubbing her face. As she removed her hand, she caught the eye of a stranger. The combination of a pounding head and the thought of the other having seen her trip made her growl slightly. “I got a hangover, what’s your excuse?”

              another night waking up in some dingy motel room above the bar, another hang over that wasn’t going to be cured until he had his next drink or fix. he was all out of cash. at least, until he sold his next piece of equipment or charmed some old bird looking for some affection. they were always easy to find late at night in this town. but now it was mid-day as he walked to get away from last nights regrets. his legs carried him all the way to the corner, waiting for the crosswalk to turn when his attention was brought to the girl stumbling out of the nearby coffee shop. same was his only thought to her disheveled appearance. his eyes went down to the spilled beverage on the ground before meeting her own. ❝  i guess we’re in the same boat. ❞

        “ no can do, buddy ” if she’s smiling, it’s only ‘cause he’s kinda even more ridiculous than usual — there’s something animalistic in the way he pleads. not mighty animalistic, like bears or lions — he kinda looks like a raccon. rummaging through the garbage, those tiny paws joined — holy shit, he looks just like a raccoon. morgan leans on the counter, chocking back a laugh,  head propped up on her fist. “ you drank all of it, i told ya. we’re out. besides, i don’t like whiskey.”

             his eyes are about half closed and it was getting to that point where his words were running together, his mouth moved at times but nothing came out. or he was just sitting there mumbling incoherently to himself. something about a girl he once knew. he’s struggling with the cigarette stuck between his lips, not realizing it hasn’t been lit yet. ❝ aw, c’mon. i’ll make it worth your while. ❞ what he means by that is anyones guess. his fingers thread though his hair, leaving a long lock sticking straight up. he gives up on the cancer stick. ❝ some jack ? bushmills ? this is a bar, morgan, you gotta have somethin’ back there. ❞
